I am a new member and new to the guitar. I got inspired to want to play this summer at a Jimmy Buffet concert in Frisco, TX. Everyone was in the parking lot partying and playing guitars, and I thought I would like to do that. Probably goofed when I bought a Fender Starcaster Acustic/Electric at Sam's. It was cheap and it has let me learn basic chords and I am beginning to get to a point where I can play through a few songs slowly. I am currently looking at a Seagull S6 to buy. I think this site will help alot. I will be asking questions. Thanks for any help.

As long as your are not attempting to profit monitarily from another persons work, without their expressed permission, you won't encounter any legal problems.

Joe Walsh-"The Confessor"
Boston-"Long Time"
Led Zeppelin-"In The Evening"
Van Halen-"Mean Streets"
Pink Floyd-"Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
Santana-"Black Magic Woman"

There's a bazillion more that I dig but these come to mind in the right cheer and now.

I Think SGinCYQX only prefers SG's because he probably has a cheapo copy of one, perhaps an epiphone..polar white maybe with EMG pickups.  Les paul is by far better, especially if you get a semi-hollowbody.

Dear Mr. Esteban, (lol)
This can't be substantiated. Personal preference is the only basis here in determining which guitar is better.

Hello Lieven,

I'm probably the last human, or in a very small group of persons in the world who has never aquired music illegally from the interenet. I know first hand how hard musicians work and I would not dare, ever, to steal anyones' music.  I have quite an extensive collection of music and if I wish to learn something I do not have, I go to the nearest music store and buy the song, or artist, for which I seek.

Have a Grand Day,

Minor correction here but it needed to be done. You've got the right idea lastrebel, just a wee bit off. Excellent suggestion nontheless.

Hey Roger,

It's not like that at all. Variation is the key with looping. Some songs will have no changes all throughout the entire tune so in this case one would be able to get the guitar, percussion, bass, etc. looped and then come in with the vocals and soloing. Other songs that do have changes will require selecting when and where one wishes the looping to occur. Sometimes it may be an intro, other times might call for an instumental bridge in the middle of a song, and other tunes accomodate a super long outro full of wailin' guitars and harmony vocals underneath.

It's all about variety and not being predictable. The loop is a coloring device, not a permanent marker. I most always play a few songs without any fancy gadgets just to show my audience that my effects don't define who I am and what I do musically. Instead the effects simply compliment what I'm trying to convey and transcend to an audience.

The looping process is so much fun and I get tons and tons of inquiries and compliments from onlookers amazed and astounded by the looping process. It's an exact process and if you're off just a wee bit, it gets progressively worse as the song goes on. But when you finally nail it and understand the process, it's like an awakening I've rarely experienced in my 24 year career as a professional musician. Variety, variety, variety!!!!

Peace and loopy Guitars,
SouthPaw41L

Re; Rosewood, Doc.  I think the Brazilian variety is a protected tree nowadays. Only a tiny percentage (if indeed any) can be used nowadays. That's why they use the Indian stuff now.....I think.

Craig.

Hey Craig,

Most of the Brazilian wood used these days for high line guitars has been previously lumbered and the wood sits in a humidor awaiting its turn for production. Martin, for example, the numerical model # represents the age, in years, of the wood used for guitar production.

Hi PJ,

Welcome to chordie. You want to be a guitar player huh? Wel ding, ding, ding, you're at the right site, the best site on the net to help you fullfill your guitar playing aspirations.

Your 'stop-sucking' time span is entirely up to you and how much productive time and effort you put into your quest. It could take 5 months or it could take 5 years. Are you ready for the challenge?

For beginning songs I would recommend that you scan through the artists and available songs here on Chordie and attempt ones you're familiar with. Also, in seeking out these songs of which you wish to learn, attempt only the ones containing chords that you are familiar with.(to start, never let an unfamiliar chord deter you though, learn the chord then try the song) Some songs I give my beginning students are; Bob Dylans' Knockin' On Heavens Door, Marshall Tucker Bands' Can't You See, Tom Pettys' Free Fallin', Dave Masons' Feelin' Alright, just to name a few. Good luck PJ and as far as the lotto numbers go your chances of striking it rich are much greater with that thing held in your hands called the GUITAR.

Peace and Guitars,

Never was a huge washburn fan, but it sounds like you really like it. Enjoy friend!

Hi LastRebel,

I'm with you on the not being a big Washburn fan either but after playing this guitar and comparing the price of it to others in it's class, it was a no brainer for me to buy this guitar. I go through guitars like a marathon runner goes through shoes so the price of this guitar($300) and the style and pizzazz just lured me in like a large mouthed bass to a fat, juicy, night crawler.(was that a good analogy?)

Hi Toney,

Lovely looking guitar, pity we cannot hear you playing it. Unless of course..................................................well, FoC can make space for you wink

Nice to meet the latest edition to your family though.

Take care,

Roger

Thanks Roger,

I hope, very soon, to be able to submit some music to FoC. A while back I got myself involved with some, well, not so nice people(promoters) who wanted to"help me out." I'm in the process of severing ties with these"nice people" and as soon as these legal issues get resolved I'll be able to promote myself and my music in a public forum. I could probably do it now without the "nice people" finding out about it but from a legal standpoint, I just can't take that chance. I always enjoy the artists' featured on FoC and aspire in the very near future to be among the wonderful talent assembled there.

Have Yourself a Grand Day Roger,

SouthPaw41L(Toney)

p.s. I have a techical question regarding spam procedure. I'll e-mail you with the question.

Hi dear Tony (don't shoot me if I still write Southpaw. I wasn't amazed about you playing acoustic.
Q: the % of playing own songs versus covers? (Meaning like Simon & Garfunkel).

Not sure what to make of the first part of your statement? (" I wasn't amazed about you playing acoustic") Please explain what you meant by this. I'm confused over this statement.

To answer you question regarding % of own songs verses covers, I play all covers unless an original song is requested. In my job, I am hired to play music that  people are familiar with and the rare times someone is interested in hearing an original song gives me great joy.

Bought this beauty in July. Took it to my guitar repair guy and made the mistake of telling him to take his time. I just got it back a few days ago. I had it converted from righty to lefty and I absolutely love it.(Wasburn D-15) I use this guitar to play solos after looping an acoustic gtr, percussion, and fretless bass. The tone and texture of this guitar is dreamy. The pick up isn't as loud as the pick up on my acoustic(it's an active pick up, the D-15 is not) but the boost I get from my pedals is enough to balance the two guitars nicely. I feel like I have a new family member. Plus it looks every bit as awesome as it sounds!!! We played our first gig together last night.

I am told by my wife that I have extreme variating mood swings yet still maintain balance and success in my career and family. I consider this a huge compliment. So given this information I would have Jack Black play yours truly and my theme song would have to be, "We Are The Champions."
The 'we' is the array of personalities that live under my skin. I'll have to go with Carmen Diaz to play my wife and Uma Thurman to play my mistress....NOW we're really talkin'!!!!
