Jeff,

Again, very nice song. I sense a strong influence from John Prine in your songwriting technique. I hope you take that as a compliment. Thanks for sharing.

Jeff,

A fine song regardless. Your vocals are very solid and my compliments to the musician playing the guitar and keyboard. It's nice to hear a recording with a human feel. By that I mean the absence of sequenced music and drums is nice. Too many people these days are over-using the computer generated crud and to hear human voice and human hands playing their instruments is refreshing. The world needs more of it.......Nice song, thanks again for sharing.

What do you all think about this song? I think it is fantastic. Billy wrote this tune and hired 21yr old Cass to perform the tune. Billy thought it would have more impact with a younger person(around the same age as the average soldier) singing the tune. Please listen to the tune and relay your thoughts....

Hi Toney,

Like Rebel, I also thought that posting a song here on Chordie gave us copyright protection as the date and time it was uploaded can be proven. I see I shall have to be going to the Post Office tomorrow now.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello Roger,

It's much easier to manipulate time and date information on a computer posting than to alter official postage material. The process of mailing one's material to oneself is basically 100% indisputable in a court of law.

Cheers,

Are you all aware that once a peice is submitted to the interenet, without prior copyright protection, that the said peice becomes public domain property and can, legally, be used by anyone? I'm not writing this to deter you all from sharing your work but to advise you to protect your work before you display it for public consumption.
The easist way to ensure your property stays yours is to mail a copy to yourself and leave the inside material unopened. Make sure the package has a clearly visible postage stamp with a date included.
There's lots of fantastic work shared here on Chordie and with 150,000 or so members the work is seen by many. Most people are honorable and good but there are scumbags among every group. Protect your masterpieces!!!!!!

Did you overdub your vocals and is that you playing the keyboard? Your guitar sounds wonderful. This is a very high quality recording, nicely done. I like the song, the arrangement, the dynamic, shoot I like it all. You should be very proud of this.

Selso,

My condolences to you for the loss of your brother and best wishes to you for your upcoming birthday. My baby sister has twin boys so I know a little about the bonds and unmatched- by- anything connection that comes with a twin sibling. You are honoring your brother superbly with your songwriting. Keep at it, your brother lives through you and your talent. I'd love to see you wtite a song to celebrate the 17 years you and your brother spent with each other, ya know? A tribute to all the good times..........

Thanks Selso, this is a fine tune.

I usually start by tuning my guitar which stays in tune well.
I'll do a few scales and riffs to get the fingers moving. I'll practice from open to Barre chords for ten minutes or so ,then I open my song book that has about 300 songs and I'll go from somg to song . I do it every day and its a routine that I like. I can play about 40 songs without the book. When I learn something new I usually practice for a long time and try to remember. My wife works evenings and the time is perfect for me. By the way I'm home alone so no one hears my singing. lol. The key is   Practice. My friends and I have Kitchen Jams often which helps me bieng self taught. I watch and pick up tips. My guitar helped me quit smoking ciggeretts and I pretty well stoped watching TV.

  I Love my guitar.

Awesome Badeye!,

Keep on keepin' on my friend and you'll be amazed at how great you'll become. Your approach and attiude are the perfect recipe to cook up a big ole bowl of guitar greatness. Your love for your guitar is inspirational.

The higher the number, the furthur down the fretboard you go.

Ben

Think of the fretboard in terms of pitch. As the sound gets higher, you move UP the fretboard. As the sound gets lower, you move DOWN the fretboard. So to move from the first fret to the tenth fret, you move UP, to move from the tenth fret to the first fret, you move DOWN.

Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny 'bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?" was redone brilliantly by Elvis Costello.
Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" was mastered by The Grateful Dead. Along with Woody Guthries' "Going Down The Road Feelin' Bad" the Dead closed many of their shows with these two fine tunes.
Hank Williams' "Move It On Over" was redone quite well by George Thorogood and The Deleware Destroyers.
Keb Mo has redone many songs and I have yet to hear one that doesn't sound like his own creation. Some include; Imagine(J.Lennon), Times They Are A Changin'(Dylan), Folsom Prison Blues(J.Cash) Isn't She Lovely(S.Wonder), and many more.
Van Halen's cover tunes from Diver Down I loved!!! You Really Got Me, Dancin' In The Streets, and my fav, Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now. These guys were at the top of their game and it was nice to hear their versions of influential music that  from which Van Halen was created.
Now for the bad;
Guns and Roses destroyed Dylans' "Knockin' on Heavens Door." Axl was doing his best Michael Bolton impersonation in this effort. Can someone say oversing? Geeez
Michael Bolton butchered Percy Sledges' "When A Man Loves a Woman". See previous sentence.
Limp Bizcuit freeze dried The Whos' "Behind Blue Eyes". Those guys came and went fast, thank gawd!
Jimmy Buffetts' version of Crosby, Stills, and Nashs' "Southern Cross" misses the mark badly as well. Jimmy Buffett is a great songwriter but his vocal abilities are not suited for CS&N's style.

Think of your capo as a permanent barre.  With the capo on the first fret and you playing an E shaped chord, you're actually playing an F. Play a G shaped chord with capo on first fret, you're playing a G#. Many times when  a score is written for a song there will be 2 chords shown. The actual pitch chord and the shape, or form chord. So, for example, you might see something like this;

James Taylor    "Fire and Rain"
capo 3rd fret

F(D)
Just yesterday morning.............

so the F is the actual pitch, or correct key the song is in and (D) is the shape for the chord to be played.

Hope this was helpful.
