You can almost see my mid-70's Yamaha dreadnought guitar in this video. It has such a big sound that it drowns out the vocals.

I sang lead and backup in barroom bands for 24 years. I don't have the beautiful vocal instrument some lucky people are born with. I attained competence as a vocalist by, first, covering several popular singer's hit songs that I found I could get away with,
and later finding my own style as a result of that good opportunity and experience.
Nobody is going to break down doors to buy the one C.D. I made as a guitar/vocalist but I know many hundreds of tunes for every emotion and how to kick a party up a level or two. That's enough to get me hired over younger, better looking players.
I can make you laugh or cry with my tuba. cool

This gets to the ladies. Sing this to a crowd and there won't be a dry eye in the joint.

I lost my favorite family member.
A friend told me to separate out my selfish grief at not getting to see her again from my grief for her loss.
That lessened the pain a little.

The crowd shouted, "Olay" as the bull ripped Hernando's Hideaway.

I bought a box of powdered water but I didn't know what to add.

A friend told me my hair is getting thin. I said, "That's O.K., who wants fat hair?"

I was playing "Put the lime in the Coconut" by Harry Nilsson with G7 and D7 back and forth.
I look it up on you tube for alchoholryan and I see Nilsson playing it all with a C7 chord only.

Back in the 60's, I played trumpet and trombone in rock/soul bands.
My good wife bought me a guitar and 3 months later, after two lessons at our local music store, I was jamming with local pickers at a country western bar.
I found that learning new (to me) songs was the best way to get better. New tunes are still the best way for me to break out of a picking rut. A new song will usually teach me new chords and inversions as well as how they should be used.
I will soon be 68 and it takes me much less time to figure chords and strum patterns than before. It takes me more time to memorize lyrics than before, darn it. roll

SouthPaw41L has the right idea. Keep it simple onstage.
My partner, John Reno, jettisoned his piano and all stomp boxes. he plays his Taylor through a stereo chorus all the time and has almost no dead air between tunes. He never takes papers onstage. If he doesn't know it, he doesn't play it. John believes he can do a better job with his eyes on the audience.
I play less often and allow myself a Korg A-4 effects pedal to change the sound of my hollowbody Gibson. I have a play list of memorized tunes that should get me through a four hour gig, but like Toney, I have a fat book with 400 tunes in it on a heavy music stand with a light. I line up and bookmark selections in my book on a break so I can get from one to another quickly.
I fear dead air and tuning loudly onstage. My A-4 pedal has built-in silent tuning.

I play a duo with my grandson, Casey. Since our last name is Gray, my best buddy suggested we call ourselves, "Gray and Grayer".
Too late. Casey calls me Poppy, so we chose "Casey & The Popster'.

vocal coach, you may like the sound of your guitar but it may need setting up by a competent tech to get the action lower without sacrificing sound quality.

"It's all good" is an expression used to sum things up that means nothing.
So easily refuted, it is a mystery why so many say it.

Hi FenderRoks,
There are only four chords in the song. Billy Currington put a capo on the fifth fret so he could sing in the key of F and use key of C fingerings.
So put your capo on any fret you please or sing low in C. The chord progression is (usually) C,G,A minor and F. Sometimes the order changes but it has to be one of those chords.
Git it on, country,

My tuba gig has been slack since the recession  John Reno has been able to book himself easily as a single act but the venues are balking about paying a six piece band. I'm an old geezer so a break was not all bad.
My grandson, Casey, asked me to form a family band. I told him he had to work really hard for it to succeed. He has done anything and everything I have asked him to do and then some. I am so proud of him.
Casey has only been singing for a few months and I have probably been at it for too long.
We played a gig in Orange Beach, Alabama last night.

In high school, I played drums in a dixieland band for a Christmas gig at Folsom prison. It was kinda scary.
The inmates liked us but they were allowed to come up on stage and talk to us.
This big scary guy wanted to play my drums and I was not about to say no. He sat down and put his foot on top of my bass drum and pounded 'til his hearts content. Nobody said anything to him including me. I just smiled and nodded until he got down.
