great collaboration guys ,
my thoughts on the rhyming purely uneducated also , its nice if it rhymes but not essential as long as it flows. I cheat when I write I use a program that finds words that rhyme.

Harlan county is a great song, tells a great story i also have some family connection to Harlan county .I think the ones who have influenced me the most as of late would to be guys like James McMurtry, Robert Earle Keen, and not not who does their writing but the Turnpike Troubadours

I always thought with my little knowledge that Texas was a hot climate with lots of desert areas. Then the other night on TV here they showed a big motorway crash in Texas with trucks and cars sliding in the ice.  We are having a cold wintery summer here not sure what's    happened to the climate.

that accident was caused by black ice on the elevated high ways road ices up on the over passes and you cant see it.
wish i knew how to post a picture its a winter wonder land around here right now

Early in the month we got 6" of snow. My snow blower decided to quit working so I had to spend two hours with a shovel. Three days later we got 4" so it was back outside  again for snow shovel duty. Then four days after that we got 3" which required more shoveling.  Woke up this morning and had to clear another 3" of the white stuff.  About an hour ago it started coming down again and another 3"-5" is predicted by morning.  ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

yeah but you live damn near in Canada thats normal i am talking Texas, its going to be 0 freaking degrees in TEXAS tonight ill repeat that 0 freaking degrees .5 inches of snow last night thats 10 inches in the month of February that 8 inches more than we have had in like 30 years total. cant shovel snow here dont have a snow shovel  i really dont know you function in this crap .

another cold wet rainy day in texas and this is the result

https://soundcloud.com/mojo01/the-last-song

G                                        Am
knew a man he played the blues
C                                 G
he didnt have much time
G                             Am
sit down and listen close
C                                    G
tell you whats on my mind

he sat there and looked away
quietly he began to play
closed his eyes and owed his head
looked at me and finally said

life is long but time is short
the road goes no where
you never know what life will bring
some times its hard to care

strummed a chord on his old guitar
said wish upon a star
make a wish and make it good
wish for what you think you should

think about the road your on
think about where you are
think about the one you love
before you go to far

then he bowed his head again
i knew it was over then
quietly he played along
lost the words to another song

the lights go dim and darkness comes
the day is at its end
i think about the songs we played
i think about my friend

sung so soft i cant hear it now
time to take a bow
with a peaceful look on his face
put the guitar back in its case

Nice one Mojo - ditto to all of the above !
Do you still have that painting. If not, it would quite a project to hunt it down.

You always come through with songs that have such imagery, and also always attach inceredible emotion or passion.  Very heartfelt.

JIm

it hangs on the wall in y kitchen if i knew how to post pictures i would have put a picture of the painting  well actualy its a colored pencil  drawing that my future sister inlaw did for my mother in 1978.

was digging through my note book and found a song i had set aside awhile back, and i realized it kind of went along with a painting i have of grand dads old  dog run house as they were called. any way another work in progress
https://soundcloud.com/mojo01/the-painting

capo third fret
chorus
Am                     C                      G                Am
there's an old painting that hangs on my wall
F                               C                       G                Am
of my grand dads house and the trees in the fall
i see that old painting and I riminess
reminds me of places and people i miss

now the wind and the rain come blowing through
the cracks in the chimney where the coffee once brewed
two lonely chimneys and the house is all gone
broken down well shed where the water was drawn
weeds in the yard and the fence is all down
nothing much left of what stood on this ground

chorus

i can see granddad in the old porch swing
aunts and uncle an cousins in the evening
hay bails piled high by the fence in the meadow
fire wood is split for the cold a the first snow
just that old house those days are gone
that painting reminds me how time moves along

chorus

Billie Joe Shaver passed earlier today (or possibly last night) at 82 years old.

He kept the Texas honky-tonk sound alive. He was a good storyteller too.

He broke into the big time by threatening Waylon Jennings, saying if Waylon didn't listen to one of his songs that he'd beat the tar out of him. Waylon's bodyguards weren't too keen on that idea, but Waylon told him, "I'll listen to one song and that's it. If I like it, we can talk. If I don't like it, you never talk to me again. If you see me coming, you turn around and walk away."  Billie Joe played him three songs and they worked together for years, with Waylon introducing Billie Joe to whoever he could.

i saw where he passed away was going to post it myself. he also played with 2 1/2 fingers missing on one hand . he was an intresting guy
