Happy Thanksgiving to all.

My cars are 1998, 2001, 2003. One has over 100k and the other two are well over that, pushing 200k. I sometimes consider getting a new car but then I realize my current ones are doing the job and I do so enjoy NO CAR PAYMENTS. Like Zurf! I intend to drive them until they become too expensive to operate.
And I will probably not buy a new car again.
A real toe-tapper. I remember hearing it but I don't remember when. The Target commercials catch my attention every time. I suppose that is their intent.

Zurf wrote:According to one of my favorite stores, Picker's Supply in Fredericksburg, the story I got on them is that Recording King purchased or licensed the designs for turn of the century arch tops from Gibson. Or maybe it was Martin. Pretty sure it was Gibson. Anyway, I don't have my facts down very well, but the point is that they aren't a new design, but a tried and true classic design. They're more of something being in production again than they are a reproduction if that makes any sense.
I got my hands on several models at Picker's Supply and loved the tone and ease of play on them. If I were a little more flush, I'd have bought one on the spot.

They're Martin clones. My ROS-16 is a copy of a 1903 Martin 000 slothead.

I think Zurf was referring to The Loar arch tops being copies of Gibsons. Yes, the RK ROS series guitars are copies of Martins.

My long-sought Martin, the one that I did not bond with? The proceeds of the sale went into a new set of tires for my car. Not as much fun, but necessary. My next guitar just turned into an ABS wheel speed sensor for my wife's car. My 50th birthday gift? A leaking diverter valve in the upstairs shower bought me a large ceiling repair.
Life: sometimes the dragon wins.

Prayers from Georgia.

Congratulations. Nice guitar. Enjoy.

There is no bad GAS. Enjoy.
My local brick and mortar store, Dirt Cheep Music, sells The Loar guitars. They are nice albeit pricey. They are built by The Music Link, the same company that produces Recording King guitars. Both lines are high-quality and worth a look.

What is the most affordable (<$150) way to get decent "field" recordings of spoken voice and voice/unplugged acoustic guitar? The recordings are for my use and not for sale or publishing.
dj
My recommendation would be to buy two of them.
Today I chaperone our church youth on a whitewater rafting trip on the Ocoee River. The challenge is the temperature is 64F - very cool for a Georgia August - and it's overcast with rain likely. I suppose we planned on getting wet anyway!

I sold the Martin yesterday. It simply did not live up to my expectations. First, value. Although I only paid $650 (a steal) it turns out it was not even worth this to me. Second, the tuners. Really this is another statement about value. I've bought, sold, owned over 30 acoustic guitars from $40- to $650. This was the ONLY one that had stiff and finicky tuners. Fixable? Sure. But for this level of guitar why should I have to fuss with them? These were Martin-branded open back, butterbean tuners and disappointingly cheap. I'll take Grovers - even the fake ones - any day. Third, the sound. This guitar sounded good but it did not sound any better than any of my other guitars. For example, yesterday I bought a 1983 Yamaha SJ-180 (000, all-laminate body) for $90. It oozes more value, features, etc than the Martin and sounds as good.
For those who play and love Martins, God bless you. For me I'll look elsewhere.

p.s. Please don't excoriate me this is just one man's experience and opinions.
A very frightening experience last night. I did not know Martin recessed the truss rod very deep to keep amateurs away. I wasn't intending to adjust anything - it's not needed - just surprised to see a hole with no truss rod. The Internet, a flashlight, and a mirror cleared things up.
I bought this used from a friend at a very good price. It is in near mint condition. Even the strings seem new. And I got the Martin case with it.
p.s. I know how much Zurf likes my curtains so here it is.

I bought a Martin 00-15M last Friday. Still experimenting with it. By far the most expensive guitar I've ever bought. I ain't no Rockefeller!
I'll post the obligatory photographs once I'm on my laptop instead of this IPad.

You'll never regret taking the high road.

Does this apply to a person with one guitar?
[Three Found] in Ohio, N.Young
In 1970 CSNY sang 'four dead in Ohio" in their song "Ohio" written in response May 4, 1970 Kent State incident. Almost forty-three years to the day of this event three women were discovered being held captive outside Cleveland, Ohio. This is a tragic situation but it's not about plastic guns and 3D printers. In fact, nary a weapon has been mentioned thus far. No, sadly the crux of this issue is far more sinister. The real issue is our society's increasing appetite for human apathy. I've read the opposite of love is not hate but apathy. This situation in Ohio is a vivid example. I'm not saying the neighbors are evil just part of a society which allows if not encourages apathy.
I'm guilty. I live in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. There are 360 homes in my neighborhood and approximately 20 homes on my street. Many neighbors but how many do I know? How many do I routinely talk to, barbecue with, or visit? Virtually none. Not all of America is like this but I'm sure I'm not alone in this. As far as I know something as sinister as this kidnapping could be occurring next door to me. I don't know. Why just yesterday my wife told me a boy who lives four doors down the street from us overdosed on heroin this week. I don't know the boy, never met him but I drive by his house everyday. I may have spoken to his mother once. I do wave at her when I see her working in the yard. Is this okay? Is this the way we unite as neighbors? As a nation?
Charles Ramsey is a hero. He chose to "love" his neighbor by saying no to apathy. God bless him for it! He should be celebrated as a hero and his actions heralded as what is expected in this countryl
In 1966 Buffalo Springfield sang these words in the song "For What It's Worth":
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.
It's time we join the chorus.

Hey, I'm enjoying my GAS...and the beautiful weather.
Just GAS. Fun for everyone.
I am zealous but terrible guitar player. However I do suffer from occasional fits of guitar acquisition syndrome (GAS). Today GAS caused me to visit my favorite guitar store, Dirt Cheep Music (http://www.dirtcheepmusic.com), located in the bustling metropolis of Smyrna, Georgia. A combination of time, interest, and proximity created a triangulation effect rivaling Dealey Plaza in November 1963.
Upon entering the store, I found myself among a flock of Seagulls (one of my favorite brands) and all three new Recording King "Dirty Thirty" models. While I will always take the time to play a Seagull guitar, I've really wanted to get my hands on the RK "Dirty Thirty" instruments. (Recording King is another of my favorite affordable brands.) After exchanging pleasantries with the always-friendly staff I excitedly reached for the RK ROH-05 (000-body). Of the three models this is the one I most interested in.
It felt lightly-constructed (a good omen), fit and finish were excellent (this is a $199 guitar), and the playability was, as they say, "like butta". I was instantly enamored with this instrument and found myself dreaming of walking out with it today. My playing was limited to noodling with fingers only, no pick (plectrum for the purists), so I can't describe how it might sound when strummed. But with only the fingers, I liked it. I definitely would recommend this instrument to any beginner or as an addition to any burgeoning guitar collection.
Next I reached for the RPH-05 (0-body) guitar. I expected it to sound boxy as affordable small-bodied instruments often do - that's why many like them - but it sounded very similar to the 000. I imagine a pick and vigorous strumming would quickly differentiate the two however. The RPH is a 12 fret design and its compactness made it even more comfortable than the larger 000. I would recommend this instrument as well.
I did not touch the RDH-05 (dreadnought) as I am not in the market for a dreadnought and generally don't prefer the looks of a dread. (Their sound is another story.)
My general impression of all three is RK hit a home run with these instruments. Sound, playability, fit and finish are excellent. The price is affordable. Heck one could buy all three for the cost of a Taylor 110 or Martin Road series. From a distance they are very appealing. Up close the impression, especially at the headstock, is toy-ish. and the satin finish (which I love) is prone to smudges which I find unsightly. This propensity to gather smudges, etc. will likely cause me to look elsewhere.
And look elsewhere I did. I have also been looking to get my hands on a Seagull Folk guitar and this trip satisfied this craving. The Seagull Coastline Folk guitar is a delight. While I love the S-6, the folk offers much the same but without the dreadnought body which I find disinteresting. This guitar is a strong contender for the next Mrs. GAS. While I can buy a used one for less, I am slowing joining the camp of playing before buying so I might be willing to pay a little more for an instrument I could audition before buying. This would also allow me to support my favorite guitar shop. Win, win, win.
Those of you patient enough to read my posts can probably guess a guitar purchase is imminent. You'll be the second to know.

Mekidsmom,
Yes, I have played the 000. It is my favorite. The dread sounds good but I find the look somewhat bland and unappealing.
Dj
Zurf,
I concur with your pricing assessment. I would not pay that for a used D-15M. It did provide a good excuse to visit GC and get my hands on a used specimen. I've sampled many new ones. I'm not sure I want a dread anyway. But it did play nicely and sounded heavenly.
