Some very cool stuff Pete. I forgot to add that the neonblade site is for people wanting to learn slide guitar. Maybe this topic is worthy of a stickey. How about it people, any more for the list?

Topic: favorite music links and sites (13 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Since I'm still laid up and bored I started going through my bookmarks and thought I'd share some of my favorites with everyone. Some of these I've posted before but never all in one spot. These cover a lot of different types of music along with instructional sites, backing tracks and more. Ones that aren't self explanitory I've added a note explaining what they are. So here we go in no particular order www.guitarbackingtrack.com www.looknohands.com (chords and scales) www.metrolyrics.com www.guitartricks.com (lessons) www.lennonchords.info www.midi-tab.com (backing tracks) www.yourchords.com (similar to Chordie) www.e-chords.com www.slide.neonblade com www.mediawebsource.com (tons of music related information) www.southernrock.110mb.com (lots of southern rock tabs) www.classic-country-song-lyrics.com www.bossus.com (pedal settings for a variety of songs) and www.kristinhall.org The fabulous songbook loads of songs of all types from kid songs to grunge . You may have to physically type some of these in as it seems that they aren't being recognized as a web site. Hope everyone enjoys these and finds them useful. Later Butch

Re: how to build a stompbox (13 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
The pickup I used was an old single coil from some cheap guitar I bought at a yard sale some time ago. I don't even know what brand it was as it had been repainted and you couldn't see the manufacturers name. A piezo would probably work as well but I have no suggestions as to a maker or type

Re: how to build a stompbox (13 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I guess I could have made that more clear. Yeah it's strictly a rythym instrument. Also those dimensions aren't set in stone. You could make it larger if you wanted to. The dimensions I gave are large enough for your foot but small enough not to be in the way of any effect pedals you may use and make it easier to transport.

I don't know how familiar everyone is with these but they are a really cool addition for your acoustic or electric guitar. They have been around for years and give you the ability to add a thump thump sort of rythym. The materials you need are really basic and you may have them laying around. I built mine with maple plywood but you could use pine. You need 2 pcs of 1/4 x 2 x 6 2pcs1/4 x2 x 13 2pcs 6 1/2 x 13 titebond wood glue bar clamps an old guitar pickup (you can use a microphone but it's harder to mount it solid ) 1/4 inch drill bit and drill paint or stain and 4 felt pads. Assemble your box using the 2 inch pieces making sure your dimensions work out to 6 1/2 x 13 You can glue this up or add some 2'' cleats and small nails. Just make sure you keep everything square. Glue one of your 13" pcs to this frame. On the inside drill a 1/4" hole and install your jack and pickup. If you use a new pickup peel the paper off the back exposing the self stick surface. If needed you can use a little superglue to mount the pickup. make sure it's centered in the box. Next glue the top on and clamp everything together until dry. Once dry sand it up, paint or stain it glue your felt pads to the bottom, plug it in and stomp away. A very easy project that with some practice will add a really cool effect to your performance. Keep rockin Butch

Yeah it's job related. Just have to hold on till the Workers Comp payments start. In the meanwhile we'll be tightening the belt so as not to drain the bank account too quickly. Of course we won't be spending as much for gas as I won't be running back and forth to job sites, but the freezer is full and so are the cupboards. The comp payments should start within a week and although it will be less than my normal pay it should keep the wolf away from the door.

Spent the day Thursday getting surgery and recovering from the anesthesia. pretty miserable day. As a result I find myself with about 5 pounds of dressings, splint and tape on my left hand. Doc says 4-6 week recovery period and then start rehab. The worst thing is the boredom. Daytime TV really bites and of course I can't play any of my guitars. Thinking about restringing one up-side down and giving that a go.(LOL) No idea of how much range of motion I'll have after this is over. Just have to wait and see. Thanks again to all for your prayers and support. The operation went well and pain is minimal. Off to the doctor again on Monday for my first check-up. I understand at that time he'll reposition my finger into more of a bent position and then immobilize it again. Looks like a long road ahead. Thanks again Chordians for being with me with thoughts and prayer. I'm sure it made a difference Butch

Would have to be "I can't dance" by Phil Collins/ Genesis but then lately I think it might be "Why Does This Always Happen to Me" by Weird Al

NELA, for a quick rehash I slipped installing a steel roof on Friday(the 16th) and lacerated my index and middle fingers on my left hand. 18 stitches total. As I am already down to three working fingers on that hand due to a prior accident, losing another will make playing with my left pretty hard. So it's a waiting game to see how it works out

Back from meeting with the hand surgeon and found out what I expected to hear. I severed the flexor tendon in my index finger. So off to surgery on Thursday and have my finger splinted for at least two weeks. Then start rehab to regain motion. It appears as if I will never recover full use of it but that remains to be seen. If not, then that gives me a perfect excuse for a new guitar and I'll attempt to learn how to play lefthanded. The knowledge is there, just needs to be applied in a different way. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers Butch

Re: Whoops (or I may have really done it this time) (21 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Just a little update. Some of the swelling has gone down and although it's painful I can slightly flex the tip on my middle finger. The position of the cut on the index actually travels from the tip into the middle section so the damage may be more severe even though it required less stitches. thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers and I'll keep you posted

Well Zguitar my boss bandaged me up as best as he could and one of the guys I work with took me to the hospital. Luckily they were having a slow morning and were able to get me in right away. I just found out that after I went down my boss slipped also only he went to the ground. I was only a couple feet above another roof which I landed on,so if I hadn't reached out to stop myself I wouldn't be writing this. Instinct and self preservation were what really caused my injury. Anyhow thanks to all who have wished me luck and I suppose dino that keyboards would be an option. But how do you strum a piano?

Topic: Whoops (or I may have really done it this time) (21 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
At work today I had a small mishap. Actually it was a rather large mishap. We were installing a steel roof and thanks to the cold temperature and lots of rain the last few days the steel was very slippery. Things were going well until my feet went out from under me and instinct kicked in. I grabbed for the peak of the roof. Big mistake. I cut my index and middle fingers to the bone right around the first joint. Eight stitches in the index and ten in the middle. They think I may have severed the tendons as neither tip will flex. So on Monday I get to see a hand surgeon and get the full report. At this point my days of playing guitar may be numbered( at least right handed) I had already lost my pinkie on my left hand and had adapted pretty well. Now however I may have to totally relearn how to do it using my right hand for chording. But it is what it is and I figure I learned how to play once, what's to stop me from doing it again. The knowledge is there I will just have to learn to apply it using my right hand. Odd isn't it,right handed people using their left hand do something that requires a fair amount of dexterity. So as things progress I'll keep my extended family here at Chordie updated. Here's to shingle roofs. Later Butch

Re: Ovation Guitars (35 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I've owned my Ovation for nearly 25 years and wouldn't part with it for anything. I've played Fenders, Gibsons, and Martins and haven't found any that I would prefer over my Ovation. Fast neck, low string height, great electronics and sounds good unplugged as well. The deep bowl have more projection but as I'm not a real big guy I find them a little cumbersome to play. Mine is a shallow bowl and is very comfortable and still has good projection. I'm not knocking other brands but I personally feel that Ovation stands in the same category as the big names. Play one and then decide

Re: greatest classic rock guitar songs (17 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
The people at GuitarWorld didn't seem to be choosing by genre or from any particular period. They included songs from the 50's to within the last few years. I think their choices were more based on the guitar parts and what made each distinctive. What I find memorable may go unnoticed by some one else. I don't know if the article was one man's opinion or was somehow compiled by the editors. Anyhow I'm sure everyone will have a different list

The August edition of GuitarWorld lists their selections for the 100 greatest classic rock guitar songs. Of course I don't agree with all of their selections or the order they have some of them. Their top 5 are Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry #2 Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin #3Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix #4 Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns & Roses and at #5 Enter Sandman - Metallica. My list would look like this #1Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin #2Free Bird- Lynyrd Skynyrd #3 The House is a Rockin- Stevie Ray Vaughn #4 Jessica- Allaman Brothers and at #5 Layla - Eric Clapton. What would you have for your top five

Kudos zguitar. If more people took an interest in what's going on in their towns, neighborhoods, and schools maybe it would make a difference. I try to volunteer what little free time I have helping the school booster club. Nothing worth talking about but I feel it's helping support school athletics which in turn may make a difference in somebodies life. Hope your teaching these kids doesn't go unrewarded even if your reward is only a little self gratification. Keep rockin

Re: was your first time ok? (24 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I remember it very well. A good friend of mine was getting married and he asked me to be the entertainment at the reception. Although every one there was a friend of mine I was scared speechless. I had only been playing a few months and only really knew about two or three songs, although I had probably around a hundred copied into a notebook. This was about thirty years ago, long before you could print from a computer on the internet. I stumbled through a couple songs and then started drinking. As the beer went down,I loosened up and made it through the reception and amazingly everyone seemed to enjoy it. Thank God for drunken audiences and people that wouldn't have known a good player from a bad one. Since then I've played in front of many people and many different venues but always will remember my first time

A friend of mine introduced me to John Prine's music about twenty years ago and I was blown away by his lyrics and simple chord progressions and how it all came together. A wonderful storyteller Prine's music really touched me as being written by someone who looked at the world and everyday matters from an everyman(any man) point of view, while not taking himself too seriously. Anyhow I found a link to every album Prine has recorded along with lyrics and chord progressions. A great site for any Prine fan go to www.jpshrine.org I've been having a ball rediscovering his music and actually being able to play it. Hope others will enjoy it too
