The Dogs will be down this weekend to do it to them again!!  First the Cats and now the Huskies.... no threat from my Beavers in the forseeable future although we'll be up there on the 22nd.  Not a trip I'll be making though.  WSU the following weekend down here.... Likely another "stuffing" and not even close to Thanksgiving!  Same old story in Beaver Country in what feels like Forever.

The Beavs always have it tough.  <insert "hard on the beaver joke here.">  But as a consolation prize, you have to love what Mike Riley has done down in Nebraska.   I had a bunch of guys up from Omaha a few weeks ago, and they love him.

It's a good thing Sherm caught that pass, because up to that point, Brandon Marshall was having his way with him.   81 yards and a TD, with a long of 41 yards.  It was good to see the Seahawks put together a road win against a good team, though.

But more importantly, my Huskies...  They *killed* Stanford on Friday on a nationally televised game.  Stanford was ranked #7, the Huskies #10, and it wasn't even close.  44-6.  The Dawgs D was suffocating.  Now they're ranked #5 going into Oregon next Saturday.  That will be a great one, unless you're a Duck.  big_smile

I've been saying for a while that the 'Hawks offensive line was going to get Wilson killed, and yesterday may have been it.   They should thank their lucky stars that Russel Wilson's knee is still attached to his body.  That was one ugly bend on that tackle.

http://larrybrownsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Russell-Wilson-ankle-injury.jpg

That to me looks like a whole lot of ligament damage and "done for the year" status.  Ends up being a strained MCL and he may play next week.  The Jet's defensive front is ferocious, so if he can't move because of the bad ankle on one leg and the bad knee on the other, it may be better to sacrifice the backup.

Other than that, its a guitar.  You know where the notes are.  smile

I actually think Kelly is a completely under rated defensive coach.  Oregon's teams got all the press because they ran this science-fiction offense and scored a zillion points, but their defenses were always super tough, too.   SFs D looked really good against the Rams in week 1.   No one is going to look good against Carolina, though.  Those guys are just a good football team, and Cam Newton, love him or hate him, is phenomenal.

The Seahawks looked like crap against Miami.  If their offense looks like that against the Rams this week, they're gonna get killed.  The Rams always give them fits, and with Wilson hurt, it does not bode well.

On the college side,   my Huskies look every bit the ranked team they are.  Their two wins were against softer teams, but they looked like what you should look like when playing a cupcake.  40pts in the first half, and the ability to sit your starters five minutes into the third quarter.  They are ranked #8 in most polls right now, which is as high as they've been in 15 years.  They should roll over an FCS Portland State team this week, and then PAC-12 play starts at UCLA.  That will be the real test.

Hi Jerome I was glad too see them win,the Rams looked bad and I was not able too watch the Seahawks. I do not know much at all about chip Kelly I thought he came from the Eagles. Wilson is out? that's bad news. They are blocking out a lot of football here too make us pay for more on my cable channels.

Chip Kelly was the head coach at Oregon when the Eagles hired him.  He is a bit of a notorious a#!hole, which is why they fired him.   So when San Francisco hired him, I was thrilled, because all my 49ers hate was wrapped up in Jim Harbaugh and when he left for Michigan, I went back to not caring about them any more.  big_smile

Wilson is in, but he will be playing on a sprained ankle.   I don't think there is a QB in the league that is more dependent on mobility than him.  He can throw it as well as anyone, but because he is so short he has to be able to move around in the pocket to see where his passing lanes are, and his ability to run is always a threat, but that is now diminished.

What I liked about 50's, 60's and 70's songs are that the radio stations and marketing agents hadn't done such a refined job of segmenting music.  You could get songs and groups that don't fit anywhere.  Chicago is a good example.  Are the jazz?  Are they rock?  Are they funk?  Are they pop?  The simple answer is "Yes."  Once pop got more and more refined, Chicago proceeded to suck more and more as they set about fitting into the genre.  Johnny Cash is another example.  He's in the Country and the Rock and Roll halls of fame.  Dylan too was folk, pop, and rock all at once.  Now, if you aren't formula, you'd better have a darned good internet marketing campaign.

Deregulating the communications sector in the late 70's and abolishing the fairness doctrine in  1987 is what lead to this.   You got that wide variety of content because radio stations had to compete in the market for listeners.   After deregulation, huge conglomerates could buy up all the stations in a market, so consolidating on a single format was a smart business move as it reduced costs.

Find yourself a radio station that isn't owned by Clearchanel, iHeartRadio, or some other giant corporation, and listen to it.  It's really all you can do.

I live about a mile from Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, and just a block or two away from singer songwriter Brandi Carlile.  I went to high school at the same place NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne went, but I was a few years after him.  He is HQed out of North Carolina these days.

If you're local, Chanel 5 TV sports caster Paul Silvi lives at the end of the street.

They don't really even have them in the big cities.   Tesco seems to be the biggest,  and the Fred Meyers down the street from me is three times the size of the biggest one I've seen.

I actually like that, though.   Instead of picking up everything at SuperMart, walk down the street, stop at the baker for some fresh bread, the butcher for some meat, the local grocer for some produce....

Jerome glad too here it,thats a blessing. I hope you will stay and post still!!

We aren't moving for a couple of years yet.   I have two more years before I vest in the railroad workers pension and kids are out of the house (new baby excepted).  This was just a looky-loo session for the most part, to see where we might like to be.  Dublin is insanely expensive, and I really prefer the west.  If we do it right, we could sorta-semi retire, which would be really cool.

And you might be surprised to know they have internet in Europe, too!  big_smile

That's pretty cool.

I'll pay attention to the NFL when the regular season starts in a few weeks.

When I get back, if Thomas Rawls is as good as he looked last season before his injury, Marshawn Lynch's retirement shouldn't hurt much, and the Seahawks will contend.

Lucky you in Ireland!! . I see the Rams have gone back too L.A.,

Yeah, we're shopping for a house right now.  I'm in love with Kilarney.

Anyway, on the College Front, my UW Huskies are going to be really good this year.  Some of the predictions from the national media are getting a bit ridiculous (I saw one  that had them finishing 3rd) but it's cool to see Coach Pete's program come together.  I believe every word of hype about their defense, though.  Young, loaded, and now in their 3rd year.   You're going to hear the name Budda Baker a lot.  Kid is a phenomenal safety.

As always, though, the goal is to beat Oregon.  Going 1-11 is OK if you do that.  big_smile

Scrum!

http://www.brandproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/rugby-scrum.jpg

It's pretty impressive when two good teams are at it.  The ref rolls the ball under it, and whoever gets the ball gets the try.  The All Blacks were so good at it, they actually changed the rules to adjust for it.

Haha!  It's actually pretty simple.   Imagine American football prior to the year 1906 (when the forward pass became legal) and the only kind of tackle you can make is an arm tackle.    That's effectively rugby.   Move the line forward via a series of laterals.  Rather than a line and snap, they have a scrum.

The Americans are gonna get killed, I think.  The All Blacks pull the best in the world from all over the world.

For an acoustic, I wouldn't use a dynamic mic.  If you are going to, use the Shure.  It's a great mic and absolutely rock solid.   Dynamic mics need a lot of energy to move the diaphragm, though,  so you'll lose some fidelity and low end on your guitar.

For the same money you can get an AKG Perception 170 SDC, and you will be much happier.   Caveats are that you'll need phantom power on your interface.  If you wanted to spend just a touch more, you can get a stereo set from CAD for just over $100.  Acoustic guitars should be recorded in stereo, anyway, in order to capture as much of the sound as possible.

Hah!  I can relate, and it's not just new.   I took my oldest daughter (then about 14 years old) to an "indie" music festival out at The Gorge.  It was two days of hippy after hippy spending 15 minutes explaining how he wrote this four minute song about saving the whales and the very sad and insightful thing he thought up all by himself about how alone we all were in the universe and blahdeblahdeblah.  It was nauseating, and I only survived the ordeal by spending most of it drunk.

At the end, The Roots came out and played a non-stop 90 minute set.  Completely rocked the house.   When they were done, they said "Thank you, good night!"  and left the stage.  Didn't say a word, otherwise.  Talk about refreshing.

"High Def" recording is mostly a scam, for the reasons Doug mentioned.  Human hearing really can't distinguish much beyond 44K sample rate, and that's based on sound science.  We can't hear much above 20K, so the Nyquist theorem says you basically need the sample rate to be twice the frequency, so something above 40K is where our ears aren't going to help us much any more.

I typically record at 44K and 24 bits, but that's only because when you're running with VST effects, you can't replace data that isn't there.
