So who is your team ?

Don't be "sceered"...... ( that's our backwoods, hillbilly, ACC lingo for "scared" )

If one is gonna dish it out one must be willing to clean a dirty plate as well.....

Fess up or shut up. (:~l)

From the homer perspective, the Huskies. I'm not claiming them to be any kind of great team, like the VT crowd does.   Playing in the PAC-10 is hard enough as it is.     Few teams ever go undefeated in the PAC-10 during regular season play.  The conference schedule is too tough.   Unlike the ACC where teams are over rated (see Tech, Virginia) even a bad PAC-10 team can beat you on any given Saturday.  See a young Washington team taking down USC last week.   Ooops.

From a who I'm pulling for this year, Oregon.   Ohio State has a brutal schedule coming up.   Oregon's isn't much easier, but if they can win over USC and Arizona, there's no reason they shouldn't play in the championship game.  I don't see Alabama getting beat.

And none of that changes the fact that VA Tech is one of the most consistently over rated teams in the NCAA.

I just tell them what key we're in, and then start playing the song.   That's really all the bass player should need.

Have a goal, every time you sit down.  "Today, I'm going to practice G to C in the open position until I can do it cleanly."  "Today, I'm going to practice major scales until my hands cramp."

If you do that, you'll always have something to do, and you can measure your progress.

Va Tech has a losing record in bowl games, too.   The only team of note they've beaten was Texas.   Alabama was off the year they lost, only going 7-4.   They managed to win against noted football juggernauts North Carolina State and Indiana.  Woo.

I'm a Pac-10 guy.  That's the league that usually has three or four  ranked teams in it, and half the teams have held a national championship at one time or another.  I know the ACC had to add Florida State to it's ranks to get a championship caliber team, but other than that, any teams have a national championship claim?

No?

Speaking of college ball,  two weeks ago I was ranting to the poor guy in Radio Shack as Boise State took apart Virgina Tech.  The announcers were shocked, SHOCKED!!! that Boise was handling VT as well as they were.  I was griping that VT was consistently the most over rated team in the NCAA, and no one west of the Appalachians was shocked by it at all.

Then this week, VT went and got thrashed by James Madison!  Bwahahahahahahah!!!!

Made my day.

Consistently over rated ? hmmmm

2004- 10 wins 3 losses
2005- 11wins  2 losses
2006- 10 wins 3 losses
2007- 11 wins 3 losses
2008- 10 wins 4 losses
2009- 10 wins 3 losses

You got the consistent part right.........

How many other teams in the NCAA have 10 + wins, every season, over the past 6 seasons? Not too many huh?

Check their schedule strength.  They play in a generally weak division, and then they pick generally weak out of division teams.   Their highly hyped strength of schedule this year has resulted in predictable results.  The ACC this year is 0-fer against ranked opponents.    They're 14-43 against ranked opponents since they expanded.

Being the best team in an incredibly weak division doesn't make you a good football team. It makes you an over rated football team.  Consistently beating Duke and Baylor isn't even remotely impressive.

I'm taking a history class, focusing on American mythology.  The vehicle for the class is baseball, an aspect of America that produces all kinds of legends and myths.  Anyway, the textbooks are Ken Burns: An Illustrated History, and Bernard Malamud's "The Natural."   Both are fantastic books that I would (and have) read before.

So I'm going to get an A.  smile

You can go see the palace without having to pay some old lady live in it.  Sports figures at the very least do something to earn their keep.  Bret Farve does not have a divine right to play football.   And the Queen ain't no where near an American politician.  Deviant as ours may be, they are all elected to their offices, and can be removed just as easily.  If any of them spouted off about how God reached down from Heaven above and anointed them to office, they'd get run out of town on a rail.

Monarchy is an anachronism, and should be relegated to museums, where it belongs.   It's much cheaper as well.

British Monarchs have been perpetually broke since William poked Harold in the eye at Hastings.  This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Oh, and just for the record, this was one of the reasons us Yanks did away with Royalty outright.  We had this to say about King George III.

"He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance."

Nice!  Taylor Swift is one of the few current pop queens that doesn't completely drive me nuts.   My 10 year old gets annoyed with me whenever there is a swift song on the radio, and she turns it up.  I give her my "mean daddy" look, and then turn it up more!

Then I laugh.

My gal is nine.  I have heard people complain that Taylor Swift's songs are all juvenile.  I would hope so!  She had songs on the radio and was getting acclaim from her peers on Country radio and in the academies when she was 16 and 17 years old.  She took new female artist of the year her senior year of high school!  Given that she is living the life of a adolescent moving into woman-hood, I would anticipate that her songs would reflect that.  She has written, and written well, about the things she knows.  My hope is that as she matures that her songwriting topics do as well.

Yup.  Writes her own stuff.  Sings her own stuff.  Plays her own guitar.   Thats worth respect no matter what.

Mine used to be a big Hanna Montana fan.  Now "she's all skanky."   I laugh and laugh. I really do.

Scales.  And more scales.   And even more scales.  The key to playing bass is the ability to be told a key (or figure it out if the guitar player doesn't know) and the create a line in a relatively short time frame.  As in "minutes."

Playing bass well is harder than playing guitar, as a grounding in theory is almost a necessity.

It was Miller Lite, my regular brand.

As an Englishman I offer you my sympathies that you are able to refer to Miller Lite as beer!! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to try a proper beer as soon as you are able to obtain some. It should be drunk at room temperature, preferably from a pewter tankard, here are a few choices for you:

Fursty Ferret
Bishops Finger
Spitfire
Hobgoblin
Goliath
Snecklifter
Black Sheep
Firestoker
Dogs Bollocks

There are loads, most of them good.

Jerry

Might want to remind him that in England, "room temperature" is about 55 degrees.  smile

Anyway, I would like to second your comments.  With all the good small batch brews available in America today, drinking a fizzy watery American pilsner is no longer something you need to do.  There is real beer here.

I just cracked a brand new bottle of Jameson 12 this afternoon.

I don't drink enough beer these days to warrant buying it by the case.  I'm fortunate that I live in an area that is overrun with small batch brewers, so when I buy beer, it's always cold and delicious.

Next time he drops those on you, say the following.

"Why don't you just teach me major scale patterns for now?"

The trick being, if you know the major scale, you know every single one of those modes, too.

Here is a primer I put together on scales.

http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8133

And remember, don't worry about modes.  If you know one major scale pattern, you can play all 84 modal scales, even if you don't know what they're called.

Galway is a college town, and is more fun than anyone can have with their clothes on.   There is a good, cheap hotel right at the foot of Quay Street that will put you right in the heart of everything.  You can't go three feet without a pub, good music, and an army of drunk Irishmen singing at the top of their lungs.

Easy way to check on the fretboard is to put your pinky finger on the major root with one finger per fret.  Your index finger will fall on the relative minor.
