Yes - slow and heavy like a Johnny Cash gut wrencher is precisely what I had in mind for this song.  Glad you like it - please let me know when you get a recording made and posted.

I am finally going to be able to record soon - on a UPS truck somewhere there is a microphone that is destined to be mine.  I have checked the package tracking site about 400 times and just can't wait for it to arrive on Monday.  James

I think it is a song - a rather eerie and spooky song, but a good song.  Thanks for posting it.

Your heading 'another crappy Mike original' makes me think perhaps you are not too enamoured of this particular effort . . . but I think it's a perfectly good song.

Since I started writing songs I have realized that not every song can be a gem - in fact, most of what I come up with is gravel . . .

But the good news is that writing songs is not like writing a novel that may take months or years to complete.  If you are not totally impressed with a song, then just keep at it and write some more.

Imagine what it must feel like for a novelist to realize that many months have been spent creating something that is 'not good'.

Reminds me of John Kennedy Toole who wrote "Confederacy of Dunces".  Poor guy could never find a publisher for his novel and ended up committing suicide in utter despair.

However, his mother kept the manuscript and eventually forced it (literally) into the hands of author Walker Percy.  Percy read it, loved it, and saw to it that it was published.  The book became a bestseller and won several awards.  It's a great story - funny, sad, absurd, and memorable.

So anyway, I like "Frightened Girl" - keep 'em coming and don't be so critical of your stuff . . . James

Glad you like it, Roger - I was going for a very bleak sound and feel.  Jets60, your suggestions on alternative 'A' chords are all quite good . . .

Roger, Should you want to record it and share with your ex, that is dandy with me - have at it.

I may revisit this lyric and expand upon it eventually, but frankly by the time I got to the second verse I was just too bummed to continue.  A shallow guy like me can only bear so much emotional wallowing!

I'll take the 'never ending mind pit of STUFF' as a compliment- thank you!

Why do I know about banjo orhestras?  Not really sure - but it is fascinating.

Why do I know about Andres Segovia?  Not really sure - but it is fascinating.

Guess I just like to read . . . just checked and there are several very good clips of Segovia on YouTube . . . incredible musicianship.

Attached is a photo of other most favorite Spanish guitarist, Charo!

Yes, guitars have been used in orchestras - most notably in the Banjo Orchestras of the late 1880's and early 1900's.  Guitars were part of the ensembles instrumentation.  At that time, banjos were far more popular than guitars (at least here in the USA).

Check these links - and also do a Google (and Google image) search for 'banjo orchestra'.  You can also try searching 'ukulele orchestra' since these ensembles were also wildly popular in the 19teens and 1920's.

Of course, guitars have often been used in ragtime, dixieland, and jazz ensembles.

As far a guitars in symphonic orchestras (classical music), there is not much liturature written specifically for the guitar.  Andre Segovia pioneered 'classical guitar' mostly by transcribing pieces written for other instruments - look up Segovia in Wikipedia.

Good morning Steve, I have fixed what I messed up earlier.  Don't know why that line was not appearing - it was there, but just didn't show.  Thanks for pointing out the omission.

The chordpro coding is strange stuff - am learning more about it all the time through trial and error.  I will try to come up with a new set of instructions to help people post their songs - - it is not difficult, but it seems tricky at first.  James

Right on the money, Jeff - As evidenced by the fact that I have just read and played "Sleep Mystery" at a little past 11pm my time and I have been up and busy since 5am.

I like the song, but will give a more rested look tomorrow because it is time for this geezer to toddle off to bed . . . James

I believe the song you are referring to was recorded by both Marvin Gaye and again by Dianah Ross back in the early 70's.  There just are not many arrangements posted for either of these artists - they were pre-internet hits, plus the elaborate orchestral backing of many big Motown hits makes for difficult transcriptions.  Probably your best bet for finding this song is a songbook with hits from that era.

"Have fun with your talent" is an wonderful thought, Steve!  I agree that if you are going to be a creative person, then you should enjoy creating . . . and you should 'have fun' acquiring whatever skills are needed to create your music or art or literature or whatever.

A singer who 'writes songs' but plays no instruments and needs someone to help figure out the chords needs to grow up and learn a little music.  Trying to claim sole creative ownership of the songs is ridiculous - - This person is not having fun with their talent - they probably are living in sheer terror that they have a limited number of creative sparks inside of them, and that soon all their creativity will be gone forever.

If I wanted to be a painter, I would 'have fun' learning about different paints and brushes and methods of using those raw materials.

If I wanted to be a architect, I would 'have fun' learning all about different materials and structural forms and designs.

If I wanted to be novelist, I would 'have fun' learning how to write novels.

This person who claims to write songs, but has no understanding of music is not 'having fun' with their talent . . . if they were having fun, they would learn about music and they would be more focused on their present creative efforts rather than the past.

I feel pity for this person . . . I hope they can get their brain and their life in gear and start to 'have fun' with their talent.

Hello bananabus & welcome to the chordie forum - It is fantastic that you want to write a song!  'What should it be about' is a great question . . . it should be about whatever strikes your imagination as 'song-worthy'.

Keep these thoughts in mind as you start writing songs . . .

* You will write more than one song (so don't feel that any one song must 'say it all').

* Keep it simple (it is just a few words and some notes - don't let it become a big, scary, difficult thing in your mind).

* Song ideas are all around us (it is simply a matter of 'seeing' the ideas and then 'using' the ideas).  Ideas can be anything . . .

* Keep you ideas and observations in a notebook or journal (lots of scribbling helps the idea-seeing and idea-using process).

* Approach writing songs in a realistic and dedicated manner.  It takes effort to write songs.  With practice, it becomes a little easier - but it still takes real effort to be a creative person.

* "Pure Inspiration Is A Myth"  Songwriting (or any creative pursuit) is mostly perspiration and just a little inspiration.  It takes time to learn how to play an instrument, it also takes time to learn how to create songs.  Do it a little every day.  Do it when you 'feel like it' and do it when you 'don't feel like it'.  If you sit on your butt waiting for pure creative inspiration to strike you, then you will never write a song because moments of pure inspiration are purely the result of dedicated creative effort.

Well done Ken, I like your treatment of the song.  Here is what I have come up with.

I made some minor adjustments to the lyric (mostly for dramatic effect).  I hear it so that the verses are sung rather calmly by a solo voice and then the chorus and bridge are quite intense and in 2-part harmony.

Jeff - a delightful little twanger!  I, too can remember summer camp and the allure of those teenage counselors - so near and yet so far . . . .

Great idea for a song and very well done!  James

Alrighty then hinder_rox07 - I'll try out some chord ideas and get back to you soon.  Meanwhile, you and your collaborator see what you can do to set the lyric to some music.  Let's just see what we come up with . . . James

Some people a proud of being all complicated and deep.
Some people strive to be all sensative and emotional.
Not me - I strive for shallow.
Here is my manifesto of shallowness:

Completely Shallowby, James McCormick

12-bar blues

I'm [C]proud to be shallow, my e-[C]motions don't run to deep

[C]Head games truly bore me, and few [C]grudges do I keep

I like to [F7]live and let live, yeah [F7]that's my attitude

I'll [C]groove upon my planet, into your [C]world I don't intrude

I'm [G7]positive and friendly to [F7]everyone I meet

[C]Just because I'm shallow don't mean my life is incom-[G7]plete

. . . .

[C]Early every morning I'm up and [C]busy with my day

There's [C]lots of stuff that I wanna do, and [C]time keeps ticking away

Iwanna [F7]work and make some money, I wanna [F7]play and have some fun

I've got to [C]find the next adventure in this [C]journey that I'm on

I'm gonna [G7]live life to the fullest,I'm gonna [F7]drink the flagon dry

I'm [C]way too shallow to sit around and constantly wonder [G7]why

. . . .

My [C]appetite is hearty, I [C]savor the food I eat

My [C]motives are quite simple, and very [C]soundly do I sleep

I try to [F7]minimize bad habits, Idon't want to [F7]cause any strife

I won't [C]bore with my problems, or com-[C]plain about my life

I'm an ex-[G7]quisitely simple life form, my [F7]instincts run quite true

And [C]being completely shallow, my regrets are very [G7]few

. . . .

I'm not [C]shallow because I'm stupid, I'm [C]actually fairly bright

I'm not [C]shallow because I'm pretty, in fact I'm [C]told that I look alright

I am [F7]shallow because Irealize that [F7]truth is so plain to see

I won't [C]join some wacky cult just to [C]set my mind at ease

If you're un-[G7]troubled by complications, and if you're [F7]simple-minded too

Then take [C]pride in being shallow, 'cause it's the shallow thing to [G7]do!

Hey JV, just noticed your latest song posted - I took the liberty of adjusting the coding a bit so that it would appear all gussied-up in the forum.

Another good one - tried to see the YouTube version, but it wasn't showing up yet . . . will try again later.

I finally ordered a microphone for myself and it should arrive in a few days.  So, I will be posting some recordings in a week or so . . . I have alot to learn about recording and editing and such.  James

Speaking of the blues - here is a link to one of the funniest pieces I have ever seen in TheOnion.  Here is the other side to all those 'she done me wrong' blues;

Tis a great little blues number.  I love the portait you have started to paint here - would love to know more about this person and more about why there is an attraction.

Seems like there is more to this story . . . please expand upon this little love story!  James

Hello hinder_rox07 - Like the idea for this song.  What are the chords?  Is it a quiet/contemplative acoustic thing or a strident/raucous electric thing . . . seems that either approach could suit the lyric.  James

Thanks badeye and american chaos theory!  Glad you like the lyric - I can definately see "Gonna Gotta" as a punk song . . . have at it and enjoy.  James

You're right Ken, this song can be played many different ways.  All of the ideas here would work - I can also hear it in a sort of Jerry Lee Lewis 'Great Balls of Fire' style.

My idea was just to write something with a rhythmic drive with lyrics that could be belted out in a barrage of words.  The words don't necessarily have any meaning.

Perhaps the lyric is inane, but it seems to have just enough familiar phrases to almost make sense and maybe hint at some real meaning.

Have been scribbling down some ideas for bridges - should have something in a day or two.  Meanwhile, y'all just do with it what you will . . .

James

Just listened to "I'll Be Your Friend", Roger.  This woman obviously made quite an impact.  I  must admit, that had I been in such a situation I would not have been so gracious and accomodating.  James
