Topic: "Happy Cute" (9 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Here is a simple little 3-chord song of love inspired by all the lovely 'happy cute' females I have ever seen or met. I'm deliberatly trying now to keep my lyrics short and sweet and avoid my usual barrage of vocabulary and polysyllabic verbiage . . .
HappyCuteby, James McCormick
I recently (finally) got a microphone, so I hope to have a recording of this and other songs very soon - I have much to learn about recording & editing. James

Full of fun old songs that are easy to play and to sing - since you are just starting out, it is a good idea to start getting your voice and hands working together. Enjoy!

Hey rocker101 - Like the idea here, but can't decide whether it is country twanger or a frenzied punk ballad or something else entirely. What kind of backing do you envision for your lyric? James

D.L.C. - I admire the lyrical simplicity of your songs. Very much like the way you paint delightful pictures in a few well-chosen words. Is this new song on your MySpace yet?
In contrast, my stuff seems so wordy and verbose - I shall strive for the elegant clarity you achieve. James

Great idea for a song and I echo your sentiments - Our neighborhood is pretty friendly because lots of people walk their dogs or stroll in the evenings. I enjoy knowing my neighbors and chatting - but some folks just choose to remain aloof and mysterious.

Re: guitars in orchestra? (8 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Yes, there is a sometimes a 'snob factor' and this is unfortunate - and it goes both ways.
Classsically-trained musicians can have chip on their shoulder since they often times they have spent many years honing their skills under the rigorous guidance of master players. Often times these 'paper-trained' musicians are technically adept, but are unable or unwilling to play 'off the page'.
Self-taught musicians (mostly guitarists) may also have spent many years honing their skills - but often times are unwilling or unable to master the basics of reading and understanding written music.
'Paper-trained' musicians can benefit from learning how to play extemporaneously. Self-taught musicians can benefit from learning about music theory.
Personally, I love music and enjoy hearing anyone play well - I don't care how they learned to play. I would never criticize anybody for being 'too educated' or for being 'self-taught'. If it sounds good - it is good.

Re: Walk Right In (4 replies, posted in Song requests)
Hello Barneyc - "Walk Right In" was made famous by the Rooftop Singers in 1963, but it was written by Gus Cannon way back in 1930.
Cannon was one of those guys who was around forever and played with everyone, but lived and died in relative obscurity. His primary instrument was banjo and he did some recordings with a group he called Cannon's Jug Stompers. He also worked with lots of other blues and ragtime and minstrel performers on the early chitlin curcuit.
There are lots of classic folk songbooks for sale that include 'Walk Right In' but I couldn't locate chords on the net.
I bet if you do some digging at some Roots Music sites you can find someone who is proud to know all of Cannon's stuff.

Good idea - chordie is accessed globally and I know of users from South Africa, Portugal, Scotland, Canada, USA, England, Autralia and who-knows-where-else.
I am from Starkville, Mississippi USA. I write songs, sing, and play autoharp & bassoon. I am 50 years old and have been learning about and playing music since I was a kid.

Hello again, Steve - Here is what I've got so far for the basic chord changes . . . pick your key (Em, D, A) or (Am, G, D) or (Dm, C, G) or (Gm, F, C) or (Cm, Bb, F).
Also, realized that Tom Petty's 'Last Dance for Mary Jane' has the same basic set of changes in the verses . . .

Re: New York Dolls (1 replies, posted in Song requests)
hello madsmadsmads - sorry your request went unanswered for several days. There are 7 New York Dolls tunes indexed on chordie. Can't say wether they are any good are not though.
The NYD listing also links to a Wikipedia article. Read the whole articlea and there are probably additional links at the end to NYD fan sites. My guess is that there is a treasue trove of stuff out there somewhere, and fan sites are the best place to find it.
Good luck - James

Hello m_p_m and welcome to the chordie forum! It is possible for users to add songs to the chordie index. Please hit at the 'Resources' page tab (next to the Forum tab at top of page).
On the Resources page you will find a section about 'Add to Song to Index' (or something like that). Follow the instructions - and the song will be added to the chordie index.
Thanks for helping expand chordie's index. Hope this helps - James McCormick

I teach at a university and this song is about the some the characters one can find on any university campus. I love what I do for a living - but the academic profession does have it's downside (it's just like any other profession - we just use bigger words to express our frustrations).
[SONG]
{t:University Blues}
{c:by; James McCormick, March 18, 2007}
{c:12-bar blues}
Some [C]students are full of hormones, they [C7]cannot use their brains
Some [C]students never study and very [C7]clueless they shall remain
Some [F]students are just plain stupid, they [F7]just don't know how to think
Some [C]students believe that college is just a [C7]scenic place to drink
Some [G]students never go to class, yeah [G7]failure's the path they choose
Some [C]students make you wanna sing the [G7]university blues
. . . .
Some pro-[C]fessors are flaming perverts, venal [C7]pompous little twits
Some pro-[C]fessors are senile windbags tenured [C7]blithering idiots
Some pro-[F]fessors can do research but they [F7]don't know how to teach
Some pro-[C]fessors are absent-minded and im-[C7]possible to reach
Some pro-[G]fessors are totally blinded by their [G7]ivory-tower view
Some pro-[C]fessors make you wanna sing the [G7]university blues
. . . .
Some ad-[C]ministrators are petty purely po-[C7]litical sycophants
Some ad-[C]ministrators are eunuchs with no [C7]testicles in their pants
Some ad-[F]ministrators are vicious sneaky [F7]predatory beasts
Some ad-[C]ministrators are cranky with great [C7]big old flabby seats
Some ad-[G]ministrators are miserable sub-[G7]humans with no excuse
Some ad-[C]ministrators make you wanna sing the [G7]university blues
. . . .
Most [C]students are quite perceptive, in-[C7]telligent and bright
Most [C]students will learn and graduate and [C7]lead a productive life
Most pro-[F]fessors are friendly people dedi-[F7]cated to the truth
Most pro-[C]fessors are just like students who are [C7]stuck in eternal youth
Most ad-[G]ministrators are people who will [G7]do their best for you
It's just the [C]dummys, d**ks, and d**kless who will [G7]make you sing the [C]blues

Excellent decision - you are well-rid of this person. Since he doesn't understand music anyway, there isn't much he can do with them. There is a delicious irony in that!
Create your own material and revel in the fun and frustrations of the creative process.

Hello Steve - Wonderful little twanger of a song . . . I see it was written in the summer '83. Hope that your bar brawling days are long over by now - a guy could seriously mess up his hands delivering justice to evildoers!
By the way - you had the song coding all correct except for "bracketSONGSbracket" at the beginning and "bracket/SONGbracket" (not /SONGS) at the end.
Great song - thanks for hauling it out of the archives and sharing! James
