Lieven,
Now that's the guitaardoc we've all come to know and love. As artists, we all go through dry, stale, stagnant, unproductive, and frustrating periods. That's one of the main differences between art and science. In art succes isn't always clear cut and what may seem horrible to one person may seem brilliant to another. I like Roger's suggestion about shortening your verse lines. Sometimes less is better, a ballon can hold only so much air before it bursts..........Keep up the great work!

Sincerely,

Just picked up a new guitar from the shop, a very old hollow body electric with no sound holes. Have no idea what the make or model is, let alone the year. They told me it may be a Supro, but aren't sure. It's got the body of a Les Paul with a LP looking neck and a horrendous headstock on it along with a tailpiece. Sounds great anyways. But it's in rough shape and I plan on fixing it up and painting it. Will be posting some pics of it shortly, hopefully someone can help me figure out what it is.

Roger,
I'll let you in on a little secret. C#7 played like this(x43404) is easier than playing a barred C#. Give it a whirl and lemme know what you think.

(All you do is slide a B7 shaped chord up 2 frets and wallah!)

Very good advice and comments from previous posts. Now here's my take on the situation. Writing music is an internal release of artistic oxygen. It has to be let out and contrarily fresh material has to be absorbed. If one isn't getting the response from his/her peers that one feels as though they should, perhaps music is being created for the wrong reasons. Creating art is about pleasing the creator. If the maker of the art is happy and satisfied that's all that matters. Don't put so much importance on the approval, or lack thereof, one receives from his/her peers. Do what you do man. Here's a bit of my own poetry that hits real close to home on this topic.

"Adopt, a new outlook, on the way you see yourself,
'cause you are with you, more than anybody else.
Learn to like this being, living under your skin,
talk to your soul, do it time and time again.
Listen to your wishes, your wants, and your desires."
** verse taken from Toney Hall original composition "Turn It All Around"**

Leiven my friend do not get discouraged, you're doin' much better than most could. Practice makes closer to perfect.

Howdy,
I often get feedback from the base strings on my tanglewood acoustic guitar when gigging, and have to turn down base on the amp ( or guitar equalizer ) which loses the nice rich sound..i have notch and frequency controls on the guitar equalizer and understand these should be used to rid the problem..HOW??
It only happens in smaller venues where i am close to (but behind!) the speakers..

Hey Pat,
I can empathize with you on this one. I'm a 24 year veteran of the live music scene and I, like you play mostly acoustic guitar for me live gigs. Many factors come into play when assessing feedback issues. Flooring (concrete, wood, terra firma, etc), ceeling height, room space, microphone trajectory, other musicians sound frequency waves, etc. I could go on all day, been there done that too many times to count. The best investment for me personally to elimate or greatly reduce feedback issues with my guitar without sacrificing that "sweet, ideal sound" is, ready?, drum roll please, a Boss GE 7 Equalizer. It's a 7 band EQ foot pedal.  I usually have to adjust the lower bands a notch or two and my feedback is gone and my sound I like is still there. I actually have 2 of them . I run one continous and the other I have set up in a Vee formation for a nice clean boosty jazzy sound that I stomp during my solos. It works for me..............................Good luck

The high school and college(New River, oft called Harvard on the hill) from which I graduated are both located in Dublin.   Virginia that is! (USA) Honest................
If you don't believe me, ask Zurf. He can confirm that there is a high school and and college in Dublin.(25 miles southwest of Blacksburgh) Right Zurf!?!?! Help out a fellow New River Valleyan here.................

Great posts here. It all comes down to this; Don't buy the hype, buy what feels and sounds right. Too many times people pay way too much money for the writing that's on the headstock of a guitar. Go to music stores and play every guitar in the dang store. Use the same amp to ensure a consistent sound source. Many times when I'm playing out people will come up to the front of the stage, squinty-eyed, looking at the headstock of my guitar. If I know for sure that I'll not be trading a guitar  in the future, I'll black-out or tape the logo on the headstock. It's all about sound and feel, not heritage and prestige. My personal rule of thumb, so to speak, it once a year I'll allow myself my average weeks pay, from playing music, to purchase a guitar. Only once have I spent the full amount. I can't stress this point enough, it's all about comfort and feel for the specific individual, Hands on, ears open, preconceived notions left at the door, select what best suits you and you alone.

Bonedaddy,
Great job fellow chordian. Your song is very, very, cool. Being a guitar instructor I do have a little bit of constructive criticism. When you play your C chord your low(fat) E string is ringing out. Some progressions allow this to work but most of the time it doesn't. 2 ways you can eliminate this; play the 3rd fret of the low E string with the C chord (332010) or  lightly touch the  low E(fat)string without pressing it down to mute the string. To the average listener this won't be an issue at all but to the experienced player it is. Again, your song is a great piece of work, you should be proud of this one!

Peace and Guitars,
SouthPaw41L

p.s. 5 stars here too!

Hello.
I wonder if anyone knows of any easy classical tabs to get me going.
Have just learnt Country Dance by Ferdinando Carulli, a lovely, easy piece. Quite suprised myself, as have always found tabs hard to decipher.
Anyway any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't really know what I am looking for.
Thanx.

Pachabel's Canon in D; here are the chords- D A Bm F#m G D G A
There you have it. That's pretty much the whole song. Now practice your chops in D major and B minor. You'll find that almost any note in these modes will fit and sound quite nice. After you get comfortable with the progression of the chords and scales then you'll be able to pick out the melody notes and make it sound and feel a bit more recognizable to the average listener.................. I play this song often transitioning from a previous song in the same key. It almost always goes over great!

I hear their music often on Sirius's "The Jam" station. Cool band.........

In 1986 when I bought my then 10 year old Fender Stratocaster it was a beaming glow of light in an otherwise dark music store that drew me to my precious instrument. The store was called Kittengers in Christiansburgh, Virginia and it was mostly stocked with used, low quality instruments. Almost like a pawn shop but it had mostly instruments and a few other miscellaneous items. When I saw this natural wood body with the white pick guard and maple neck I heard harp music in my head and immediately became semi-hypnotised with mental visions of that '76 strat and I running together in a grassy pasture twirling round and round in a state of total bliss. Or maybe I was just really stoned and needed a guitar. Regardless, we became partners that day and have been together every day since..........

This is probably a stupid question but will a soundhole pickup for a 6 string acoustic work well for an acoustic bass? A friend has a dean playmate bass the acoustics aren't that bad but the electronics it came with are trash. I was going to recommend to him possibly a soundhole pickup but wanted to make sure it would work properly before I made a fool of myself...lol Thanks!

It will work, it won't sound very good but it will produce sound. The volume you'll need to attain with your amp will most likely be a feedback nightmare too. As Kahuna said, a bridge pick-up will be more effective in reproducing the true acoustic sound of the instrument. The in-hole pick-up will only reproduce the sound of the strings, the bridge pick-up will incorporate the string and body sound. Much fuller sound............

Nice song Bonedaddy. Actually the Dixie Chicks aren't enduring the boycotts and bans they originally did at the time of their statements. Many, the majority of the American public now see and understand what they meant in 2003 and most Americans, with the exception of a small portion of right winged pea brainers, concur with the Dixie Chicks in their vocal protest of invading Iraq.

2 things factor greatly with me as far as breaking strings go;
1) If my picks are getting worn down and have snags in them, the pick will catch on the string, thus eventually causing the string(s) to break before their time. Keep a close eye on your picks. Toss them when they start to show signs of wear.
2) If I am playing in a humid environment my strings have a tendency to break much more often than playing in a non-humid or climate controlled enviroment. Keep your strings wiped down as often as you can and place your instrument in it's case (closed) while on break.

I wouldn't be too upset that you're not breaking strings while playing. Most of the time when one breaks a string one's instrument goes awfully out of tune.(mine do at least) Some people, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, can break a string and make it look cool. SRV used such thick strings that when one broke the rest were tight enough to prevent his guitar from sounding so out of tune. Most people lack the prowess SRV had and most peoples instrument's sound like poo-poo when a string goes pop-pop.......

I really like these guys. It's refreshing to see young musicians staying true to their roots. Mainly these guys do it the old-timey traditional way but the add some modern flavor to a beautiful style of music. Nothing against drummers but it's nice sometimes to hear music without percussion. Here are a few links and information about these young gents from Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

I've got the buy another guitar bug again. I've got 3 acoustic and a banjo. For some strange reason I have decided if I buy an electric it will be a Les Paul.

I have to admit to not knowing alot about the different models and would like a bit of advice or some views on the Les Paul range. It would be a new one, not second hand, and a maximum of around £3000 ($6000).

Any help out there?

This is an easy one. You have $6,000 to spend correct? Buy a LesPaul and a Strat, top of the line(or close to it at least) and you still have some $$$ left over to buy some beers( and buy an inexpesive 5 watt  class A tube amp) to throw a party for your 2 new bestest friends....................I'm a proud and very owner of one each(  Gibson LesPaul and Fender Strat) and I can honestly say, in my heart, mind, and hands, there are no finer guitars made than these 2 beauties. They're kinda like salt and pepper, beer and pizza, no-naggin' from the wife and watchin' football, socks and shoes, catch my drift?...............

If I'm not mistaken, which I often am, Oldfield's use of deep chorus, rapid tremelo, plus his amazing vibrato are some of the factors that give him his 'unique' sound.
