Glad you like it, Jeff.  I have been having lots of fun lately with simple waltz forms - for some reason, the lyrical meter is just stuck in my head.

Maybe I should worry about getting stuck in a creative rut doing so many waltz-timed songs.  But I'm having too much fun to be concerned.

So much stuff is in 4/4 anyway . . . I'll just be a rebel and enjoy my waltz phase while it lasts.  James

This one sort of formed in my mind as I was doing some yardwork on this beautiful Easter day.  I realize that I have taken very broad poetic license with the facts of history, but hey - it's a song, not a bloody textbook!

The Heathens Are HereJames McCormick, April 8, 2007

In 6/8 time, an end-of-empire waltz

Just [G]pass me my fiddle, I'll [C]rosin my [G]bow

You [G]don't have to tell me what I already [D]know

[G]Scream bloody murder and [C]hunker down [G]low

The [G]heathens are here, they're [D]runnin' the [G]show

. . .

[C]Grab some provisions, take [G]just what you'll use

Some [G]food and a weapon and [D]sensible shoes

[G]Head for the hills and [C]sound the a-[G]larm

The [G]heathens are here, they're [D]heavily [G]armed

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire it's [G]been really [D]sweet

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

We [G]conquered their land, en-[C]slaved them with [G]trade

[G]Won hearts and minds at the tip of a [D]blade

[G]Made them an offer they [C]could not re-[G]fuse

The [G]heathens are here, they [D]are not a-[G]mused

. . .

[C]Life was so simple when [G]we were on top

The [G]milk and the honey just [D]never did stop

Ex-[G]ploiting our neighbors just [C]made so much [G]sense

The [G]heathens are here, they're a [D]little bit [G]tense

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire the [G]end is com-[D]plete

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

[G]Might just makes right, that's [C]been our mot-[G]to

We [G]made them agree where e'er we did [D]go

We [G]took their resources, their [C]primitive [G]bliss

The [G]heathens are here, I [D]think they are [G]pissed

. . .

So just [C]pass me my fiddle, I'll [G]rosin my bow

You [G]don't have to tell me what I already [D]know

I'm [G]not really sure what [C]I'm gonna [G]do

The [G]heathens are here, I [D]think we are [G]screwed

[C]Rome is on fire, the [G]skyline is bright

De-[C]cide for yourself to [G]flee or to fight

[C]Rome is on fire this [G]is our de-[D]feat

[G]Is this new history or [D]just a re-[G]peat

Here is a song about motivations and decisions and consequences.  Can't claim to be an expert on life, but I have at least learned that there are consequences for every choice we make.

Do ItJames McCormick, April 6, 2007

6/8 time, an existential waltz

You can [C]do it with dignity, [Am]do it for spite

[F]Do it all nasty, or [G]do it polite

You can [C]do it for selfish, [Am]do it for share

[F]Do it with hope, or [G]out of despair

. . .

You can [F]do it in secret, [Em]do it for show

[Dm]Do it haphazard, or [G]do it just so

You can [F]take it all timid, or [Em]take it in stride

[Dm]Do it for shame, brother [G]do it . . . . for [C]pride

[Bb]Choose, [F]Choose, [C]Choose

[Bb]You've got the [F]power, to [C]choose

[Bb]Choose, [F]Choose, [C]Choose

[Bb]Use your [G]power, to [C]choose

You can [C]do it for reason, [Am]do it for rhyme

[F]Do it with frenzy, [G]do it sublime

You can [C]do it with malice, [Am]do it with care

[F]Do it with curses, [G]do it with prayer

. . .

You can [F]do it for jealousy, [Em]do it for sport

[Dm]Do it with confidence, [G]do it with doubt

You can [F]do it for boredom, [Em]do it for zeal

[Dm]Do it for fake, sister [G]do it . . . . for [C]real

[Bb]Choose, [F]Choose, [C]Choose

[Bb]You've got the [F]power, to [C]choose

[Bb]Choose, [F]Choose, [C]Choose

[Bb]Use your [G]power, to [C]choose

You can [C]do it for fantasy, [Am]do it for fact

[F]Do it with force, or [G]do it with tact

You can [C]do it for vengeance, [Am]or to atone

[F]Do it all shallow or [G]down to the bone

. . .

You can [F]do it for love or [Em]do it for greed

[Dm]Do it to heal or [G]do it to bleed

You can [F]do it for conquest or [Em]unity's sake

The [Dm]life that you live is the [G]choices . . . . you [C]make

[Bb]Choose, [F]Choose, [C]Choose

[Bb]You've got the [F]power, to [C]choose

Thank you for the positive feedback, gentlemen.  It is wonderful to see so many original songs being posted to the Songwriting Forum.

Since this song is so 'off-beat' in nature, I thought it would not get any response at all.  Hope to have a few quiet moments this weekend to record this song and some other's I have written recently.

Here is a dark little song about people who are seemingly consumed by negative energy.  Hope you don't have to work or live with somebody who lives in darkness . . .

Feed MeJames McCormick, April 4, 2007

In 6/8 time, A dark waltz

I'm the [C]glitch in the system, I'm the [Em]fly in your soup

I [Am]feed on frustration, [Em]anger, and fear

[F]Hate keeps me [G]big and a-[C]live

[F]Feed me with terror, [C]feed me with hate

[F]Feed me with vicious [G]greed

[C]Feed me with bile, [G]feed me with rage

I'm [F]all that [G]you really [C]need

Your [C]anger inside keeps [Em]nourishing me

I'll grow [F]sassy and fatter each [G]day

I'll [C]gnaw at your guts 'til e-[Em]ventually

I'll [F]eat all your [G]goodness a-[C]way

Lots of old hippies and classic rock lovers will be there?  It will probably be great fun!  Being sort of an old hippie, here are some tunes on chordie from that timeframe (and a couple of others) that will resonate well with such a crowd.  They will also lend themselves nicely to 2 players/voices:

Hello adel48 and welcome to chordie.  Perhaps the song you seek is by Otis Redding?  He had a song entitled, "I Love You More Than Words Can Say".  A search for the chords came up empty, but here are the lyrics:

Social satire is always fertile ground for song ideas.  One of the great satirical songwriters of the 60's was Tom Lehrer.  This little song is in the style of Lehrer's tongue-in-cheek commentaries.

Please note that it is SATIRE - I am not really advocating public stonings.  Unfortunately, there are societies where this horrific practice is still used today.

Just a Stone's Throw AwayJames McCormick, April 2, 2007

This is A SATIRICAL SONG in the style of Tom Lehrer

[C]Some folks say that Justice is [F]way too soft and [C]slow

[G]Some folks claim all lawyers should [F]be the first to [C]go

[C]Some folks feel that punishment ain't [F]good unless it's [C]cruel

So [G]we can fix the legal system if we [F]simply change the [C]rules . . .

[G]Ohhhh - [G7]Let's have [C]weekly public stonings [Em]down in City Park

[F]Offing those transgressors will [G]be a merry lark . . .

[G7]Just [C]grab a rock and circle 'round, [Em]bring the family

Exe-[F]cutions are a perfect way to [G]build communi-[C]ty

[G]We [G7]can [C]rent official stoning rocks be-[F]fore each weekly [C]bash

[G]Give the people choices and they'll [F]pony up the [C]cash

The [C]aged and the little ones will [F]need them small and [C]cute

Leave the [G]big ol' heavy sharp ones for the [F]strong self-righteous [C]brutes . . .

. . .

[G]The [G7]a----[C]dulterers and apostates should [F]be the first to [C]go

The un-[G]faithful and the doubters surely [F]won't be missed you [C]know

So if [C]everyone will please confess their [F]secret little [C]sins

We'll [G]schedule your execution and the [F]clean-up can be-[C]gin . . .

[G]Ohhhh - [G7]Let's have [C]weekly public stonings [Em]down in City Park

[F]Offing those transgressors will [G]be a merry lark . . .

[G7]Just [C]grab a rock and circle 'round, [Em]bring the family

Exe-[F]cutions are a traditional way to [G]build conformi-[C]ty

[G]Ohh-[G7]ohhh [C]Murderers, thieves and rapists we can [F]dispatch easi-[C]ly

[G]Speeding drunken drivers we shall [F]deal with certain-[C]ly

[C]Louts and geeks and smelly folk will [F]make good targets [C]too

And if you [G]ask too many questions we will [F]have some rocks for [C]you

. . .

[G]Ohhh [G7]the [C]honor of the first two throws are [F]for the highest [C]bids

[G]Opening price depending on just [F]what the person [C]did

Ce-[C]lebrity offenders will bring [F]tons of reve-[C]nue

And com[G]memorative celebrity stoning rocks can be [F]sold with genuine [C]goo . . . (Gift box and certificate of authenticity included!)

[G]Ohhhh - [G7]Let's have [C]weekly public stonings [Em]down in City Park

[F]Offing those transgressors will [G]be a merry lark . . .

[G7]Just [C]grab a rock and circle 'round, [Em]bring the family

Exe-[F]cutions are an effective way to [G]build civil-[C]ty

[G]Oooh [G7]those[C]Tax cheats, inside traders, poli-[F]ticians on the [C]take

[G]Dealers, pimps, and crooked cops great [F]targets they will [C]make

[C]Liars, cheats and pompous twits we'll [F]bash them all with [C]glee

We'll [G]circle up and get 'em, Hey - - don't [F]look that way at [C]me . . . .

[G]Ohhhh - [G7]Let's have [C]weekly public stonings [Em]down in City Park

[F]Offing those transgressors will [G]be a merry lark . . .

[G7]Just [C]grab a rock and circle 'round, [Em]bring the family

Donna, this song is irresistably fun - I hear it as a Betty Boop sort of showstopper.  Oops!  Don't know if Betty Boop translates across the deep blue sea  - she was a cartoon siren from the 1930's, a fetching little flapper who sang and danced.  Anyway, nifty song.  James

Thank you for the kind words, Roger.  This concept may seem obvious to everyone else, but I finally figured out why I was so 'mic shy' - I was trying to sing 'at or into' the mike rather than sing 'through' the mike.

Having that simple realization has really helped.  Now, I try to forget the microphone is even there and project my voice to a point in space well beyond the device - just like I would normally be singing without that thing stuck up into my face.

Still haven't heard from Emmylou Harris - - -

Ouch! I just noticed that chords originally posted in "Come Away" were wrong - all the C's should have been G's.  It's a 3-chord waltz: D, G, & A are the only chords needed.

Have made the necessary changes - sorry for the errors.  James

Jeff, this is haunting and poignant stuff - powerful!  Your 'way-back file' is a good place to dig.

By way back do you mean this a song you wrote long ago, or is this based on memories from long ago?  Either way, this is a dandy portrait of emotional despair.  James

Still wish that Emmylou Harris was my neighbor, so that she could harmonize on the chorus - I might even let her sing a verse!<img src="index.php?t=getfile&id=116&private=0" border=0 alt="index.php?t=getfile&id=116&private=0">

Here is a short & sweet little song of love.  Will record it soon for posting to the Friends of Chordie page at MySpace.  I'm also considering adding a bridge toward the end, but it seems 'done' as it is?

In my imagination, I hear Emmylou Harris harmonizing on the chorus (Hey - a guy can dream, can't he?).

Come AwayJames McCormick, March 29, 2007

3/4 time, a lullaby waltz

There's a [D]fog in the air and a [G]chill in the room

And we're [D]feeling alone and so [A]cold . . .

What's [D]happened to us?Where [G]did we go wrong?

This [D]mess is a [A]shame to be-[D]hold . . .

Come a-[G]way with me, Love.Come a-[D]way, come away

[D]Come with me Darlin', a-[A]way . . .

The [D]fog and the chill can [G]be in the past

Come a-[D]way, come a-[A]way, come a-[D]way

There's [D]so much needs sayin' but it's [G]so hard to speak

This [D]silence is screaming at [A]me . . .

Just [D]give me a glimmer, just [G]one little sign

I'm as [D]willing as [A]willing can [D]be

Come a-[G]way with me, Love.Come a-[D]way, come away

[D]Come with me Darlin', a-[A]way . . .

The [D]silence can end with [G]one tender sign

Come a-[D]way, come a-[A]way, come a-[D]way

The Am-[D]brosia of Love is so [G]fragrant and sweet

I de-[D]sire to share it with [A]you . . .

Though our [D]flagons are dry, we can [G]fill them once more

To-[D]gether we'll [A]work this thing [D]through

Come a-[G]way with me, Love.Come a-[D]way, come away

[D]Come with me Darlin', a-[A]way . . .

Am-[D]brosia awaits our [G]tender caress
