Hello fellow Chordians!!!!

God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood

This is a song that every guitar player should learn.

So what I need is the strumming pattern.

The guys in the video aren't that great. Any guitar player with 4 hands can do that stuff. I'm sure it's really easy for #13, he's got 8 fingers on his left hand. I kinda think that's cheating. Funny, you would think that their bionic hand transplants would have made the news headlines. HA!

Really tho, how in the world do these guys even get the notion that they can play like that? At what point in their guitar career do they think, "let me try this and see what it sounds like".

Can they do that on any guitar or just the ones they keep warm in their beds at night?

Thanks again Steve!!!!

So I'm good for now, but what about next time? Hint, Hint, somebody make me a vid lesson.

Devilcat, I downloaded the easy chords program. Awesome program. I tried it out on a couple different songs and it was a little off. Bad thing about the program is that it processes the real song. Not an acoustic only version. I guess I could transpose it all. But I'm really in the same boat. Chord chart but no strum pattern. I guess half is better that nothing. Then again I could just find the chord chart right here on Chordie.

That was really good Steve. I will definately give that a try. I watched the Fogerty video like 20 times again the other night. Man, it's really hard to pick up. I think I saw him do a pull off on the D, but I'm not gonna worry about it. I have the verse pretty much down. I will work on the bridge.

I'm glad I could help you learn to play this song.;) I've liked it since it came out 2004. Wow 5 years old already?!?!?!?

Really tho, thanks for getting in to this song to help me with it. It has been one of my top five to learn. You should do more lessons. I could totally learn from your vids.

Thanks Steve that strum works for me. But what about that little solo he does.

You posted this for me before:

"Two measures leading up to the bridge after he says "..all over again."

1111  1111  - Then the bridge.,,11 11 1111 11 11 11 11 1111
where 1111 is a whole measure and 11 is a half a measure and spaces are the chord changes.

I think capo on 2nd fret goes like this:     C G D C G Em C G ...
D would be full measure, and last G would be full measure.

Who'll Stop the Rain comes to mind"

I don't quite understand it. I tried to write it out, but it didn't fit together.

According to some of the easy songbooks, I'm about 60 - 70 songs behind. I know I've learned alot since I started. Keep in mind I can't play any of my songs thru without mistakes and they are beginner versions. So I wouldn't use the word impressive. Really, the new songs I'm looking for are not much different than what I already know. So I don't think I've hit my first plateau with my abilities yet. A guitar issue has set me back withmy barre chords, but everyday is a learning experience. I just wish that the lessons I want were more readily available.

Thanks for the input

Hello again,

strumdoc - the beatles are way out of my league also. I can play 1 of there tunes tho.

steve - here's what I'm working on. Some I can "play", with mistakes of course. Others I'm working on. Actually they're all a work in progress, but some I can make sound descent.

Mad World - Tears for Fears
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
Brown eyed Girl - Van Morrisson
Have You Ever Seen the Rain - CCR
Angels  - Robbie Williams
Free Fallin - Tom Petty
Save the Last Dance - Drifters
Lodi - CCR
All for You - Sister Hazel
Love Me Do - Beatles
Let Her Cry - Hootie
One of Us - Joan Osborne
Paise Adonai - Paul Baloche

That's my whole repertoire

Pix - I tried asking a long time ago and got the famous line of "feeling it out". I'm just not able to do that. But here are some I am looking for. This first one I've been dying to play. It doesn't look hard at all, even the solo looks doable. But I'm just not talented enough to be able to listen and do. Anyway here's just a few.

Deja Vu - John Fogerty  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkazf7znllQ
Our Country - John Mellencamp
Without Expression - John Mellencamp
Sister - The Nixons
Mr Recordman - Ugly Kid Joe

Pix, your vid on mad world are the kind of vids I'm looking for, maybe a little more in depth tho, if the song calls for it.

So I leave it up to the all knowing and wise Chordie veterans to maybe bless me with some more good info.

You guys are awwesome!!

Chordians are the best!!!! All this feedback is very helpful.

Zurf - I totally understand what your saying, but I think it's a little simpler than that. Heres' how I go about getting a song.

1) I look thru my collection of mp3's, find a song I would like to learn, then hunt for a video lesson.
or
2) I look thru the video lessons on my favorite websites and see if there is a song I like.

Problems:
1) I can't find a video lesson.
or
2) I can't find a song I like.

I don't know if I'm being overly picky. I not even really looking for a certain sound. I just want to play songs (that I like). Is it really that difficult. I can't be the only one with this issue.  There are tens of thousands of video lessons out there and more being made all the time. I find it hard to believe that I'm missing them or they don't exist.

I'm am actually going to pay for some lessons online from www.grouptherapy.guernsey.net.
I did Mark's free lesson and it is exactly what I need. He sends you a chord chart with an Mp3 of how he's playing it. By the end of the year I'm hoping to have started this. It's not free, but like Zurf said, I'm running out of options.

How do you guys learn songs? Am I missing something?

Thanks for listening

Hi all!!!!

So here's the story, I took my guitar in to the shop back in Juneto have the action lowered. I didn't know if it needed it but if it made playing easier I'm was all for it. So, they told me it was pretty low already, but they would file the nut to make adjustments. Since then I've read conflicting stories about lower at the nut. I get her home and notice a little buzz on the low E, no big deal really. I get to learning new stuff in the next month or so that moves me up the neck. Now there is lots of buzzing on 2 or 3 strings. I change to a heavier gauge string having read that the increased tension could put some relief in the neck and eliminate buzzing. Bad idea, I didn't like the thicker strings and buzzing was still there. I take it back in Aug and have them look at it again. They say frets aren't level. he showed me and sure enough they weren't. Level frets, new bridge to raise action and get rid of buzzing, and restring. Ok, it's only been two weeks and it feels like a totally different guitar. For the worse I mean. Sounds tinny, same strings I've always used though. I have to push alot harder and really close to the fret so I get a clean sound. I used to not have to push hard at all and anywhere in the fret was fine. So now my progress with barre chords has fallen way back because I have to push harder now to fret a chord. Oh, forgot, it's an Ibanez PF4, just a standard acoustic nothing special.

I'm thinking about taking it to someone else to look at.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

Here I go complaining again!!!!!

I don't want to learn Greenday, Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Neil Young, Snow Patrol, or The Eagles.

Oh my gosh!!!!!! Where am I gonna find lessons on song I want to play? I am stumped. That's 2 nights in the past week that I've spent 2 or more hours per night looking for something I might like and think I could take on. But to no avail.

Is it really that hard?

Any suggestions?????????????????

Thanks All

Thanks for all the responses, great info for me.

I wasn't talking about playing songs exactly like the recordings. I want to play it like I've heard other acoustic players play it. Like Cats in the Cradle, I wouldn't say I could play this song if I didn't know the intro. It's a must, for this particular song anyway. Another one is For What It's Worth, that little bass line thing IS part of the song and I've seen it played as such by a solo acoustic. I couldn't get it so I gave up that song for now.

I will check out Gold Hat. Being shown is exactly how I need to learn. That's part of my problem now, I can't find any video lessons for songs I want to learn. You're right Zurf, I just want to learn songs. Learning guitar is not what I'm after. Imitating gets me where I'm going.

Turret knows exactly what I'm talking about with the songbooks. 3 months and they can play 100 songs????????????? I'm at 9 months and have 12 songs I'm working on but can't play anyof them without mistakes. I know, I know, I should just pick 1 and get it right, but I get bored.

I spent like 2 hours in the songbooks last night and came up with nothing. I did find a few that I clicked on, then up pops the F and B. So out those went.

Ok rant time over for now.

Hi all!!!!

I don't know if it's just me, but alot of the songs that people say are easy look hard to me. Either they aren't playing the whole song (intro, solos etc) or I just really suck and should quit.
For example, Cats in the cradle is in some easy songbooks. Are you kidding me, the intro (which HAS to be played in the song) is a killer. I find stuff like this all the time. I've been playing for about 9 months I think. I am progressing fine. I know everyone progresses differently, but come on. Some of the songs that people who have been playing way less than me say are easy is blowing my mind. Another is bad moon rising, strumming is way too fast for it to be an easy song.

I just don't get it.

Another thing, while goining thru the songbooks I can't find anything I really want to learn and  I see the same songs everywhere.

Anyway thanks for listening to my rant!

I don't want to be a downer here but, how long will it before you can actually serenade her if you're just a beginner?  I've been playing about about 9 months and most of these songs suggested look hard to me. I could maybe play wonderful tonight.  I hope you can do it cuz that would be awesome!

The point I'm trying to make is, don't get discouraged. It seems like your setting yourself up for disappontment a little. Everyone gets discouraged just trying to learn to play. You have another reason on top of just learning. So, stick with it and keep practicing. If you're commited then only good things will come. Playing guitar can give you satisfaction like nothing else.

Good Luck

May God bless you and your service to our nation

I think we're getting away from the original idea a little. All I was suggesting was a sticky that listed all of our favorite resources for beginners. Something that would stay at the top of the forum like the strumming sticky.

If it's there I'm sure it will be looked at. And it would be more complete I think.

I think a good title to the sticky would help. And as a sticky it would be on the top of the forum page.

And like Zurf said we can point to it because it will already be put together. Instead of having 8 different references in 8 different replies. Being a noob myself, I would loved to had had this when I joined Chordie. I can't count the number of hours I spend looking for lessons and what not.

Anyway, its just an idea.

Learning songs keeps it interesting for me. I would have given up long ago if I were just learning scales and theory. I know that stuff has it's place but that place is not with me. At this point I just want to be able to play some songs. I learn different things as I go. I have gone back to my first few songs and added things to them that I have just learned but couldn't do before.  The hardest part for me is strumming patterns. Chords are difficult in their own right (still working on the F,Bm,F#m) , but chords alone don't make a song.  I wish everyone would post strum patterns along with the chords. It would make life so much easier!

Welcome to Chordie!!!!

Congratulations on entering the world of guitar playing. It will give you satisfaction like nothing else.

That's good that your fingers are getting calluses, thats what keeps them from hurting too much.

As for easy songs, try the beginners books here.

Easiest one I know is Free Fallin by Tom Petty.

D G G D A  -one downstroke for each chord. Capo on the 2nd fret. It's really easy.

Another is Mad World by Tears for Fears.

Em G D A  -strum DDUUD for each chord. thats the verse.

Chorus is Em A same strum.

We might be getting a sticky posted to aid newbs like us with good resources.

Southpaw41l where's our sticky??????????????

Anyway, good luck.
