I  sing, play guitar, harmonica, bass guitar, and many various percussion instruments in a full-time, small-time band. I lay down the beef of my music with my guitar and color my music, via looping, with my bass and percussion. I find playing bass to be somewhat easier than playing guitar. I play rhythym and lead guitar simultaneously so when I add bass guitar to my loops it is a lower octave shadowing of what has previously been established. I do session work on bass as well and I personally find playing bass along with a lead guitar player much easier than playing  guitar leading a band.

for the best sound, it has to go to John Prine in the royal concert hall in November last year.
that place really has a super duper sound system in there. it was not bouncing about with attmosphere but the sound blew me away.

Ken

I'm sure this place has great quality equipment but the voice and instruments coming through this great gear aint squat unless the sounds put through this top of the line equipment isn't genrated by master musicians. John Prine and anyone who has he privelege to stand along side him on stage are undoubtely masters of music.

Old Doll,
I like track 3 especially. ( Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us) The melody, the arrangement, and the title. Rosetta is my wifes' name!
So what's the scoop with Plant and Krauss ? Are they an item or what ? I have no inside information only a hunch. Regardless, the CD is one of the best I've heard in a long while. T-Bone Burnett is the mayn!
I played 2 gigs yesterday and alternated "Once" and "Raising Sand" on my breaks at both gigs. My ears and soul were nicely filled with great, fresh music all day( on the breaks ). I'll let others speak of the music I was playing.

I watched several of these guys videos. One song the guitarist has his B and high E strings muted with tape. Intersesting. He's also playing a 7 string guitar. The drummer is sick! I like this band, very adventerous and great musicianship. Really enjoyed this bands stuff.

Hey Pukenekless,
Will you please elaborate a little further on your 90/10 ratio of image vs. ability theory. I'm not sure I'm getting the full gist of your comment.

Well I think you might mean my friend from childhood. Phil Lynott? Who is/ was better known as  Lead singer with "Thin Lizzy" He was also the first person I knew  to die from drugs. He was a lovely guy so sad how it all ended for him. he used to play in our local youth club.

.

Yeah!?!?, that's what i meant to say (duhhhh, ooops) At least i got one of the reference points semi-correct. (Lizzy) My wife bought me the  "Once" soundtrack for valentines day along with the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss CD. Both beautiful works of music.

Very pretty guitars TennStrat. What exactly did you do to the Gretsch? Would you be able to convert a double cut-away Gretsch from righty to lefty? The only Gretsch I've seen available for leftys are the high$$ Chet Atkins models. Feel free to e-mail me with specifics.( ie price, timeline, etc.)

Jeff,
Congratulations on another fine, well-written song. I like the dual meaning of "a yard apart". I know from your explanation that this song is for your wife and your feelings for her. But for the uninformed listener, one might see it as a story about a person that has the hots for a neighbor that lives, "one yard apart."And the pledge you write of in the first verse could be a private pledge to oneself. Hey, it's just my wacky thought process. You have a magical way with words and your arrangements are always solid. Fantastic !

SouthPaw41L

ps-Please send my well wishes and gratitude to your son.

Have any of you good people seen this film?("ONCE") It's a modern musical filmed in Ireland that stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. My wife picked it up last night, said that the story line reminded her of me. We watched the film together last night. Brilliant !!! I came home tonight after my gig and watched it again. A few of the songs from the movie have been in my head all day. I am moved by this film and the high quality of the music in it. If any of you folks have ever struggled to make ends meet, as I have done much too often, you will appreciate this film.

P.S. for OLD DOLL, there's a scene by the Lizzy Borden statue. (the same one on your myspace page!)

The 2nd and 3rd frets on the neck of my guitar have grooves in them from the strings and I'm getting a twang sound when playing on the 1st string. I've put a new saddle in and raised the strings but now they're pretty high off the neck! Was wondering if anything can be done to the frets or replaced without costing to much?Any suggestions would be appreciated ....TY

MM,
A bit of advice from me to you that'll prolong your fret life in a big way. Use a capo. Before i began using a capo I would have to get 3 fret jobs a year on my main gigging guitar. Since I added the capo i've been getting close to 3 years between fret jobs. I'll move the capo around from frets 1-5 throughout the course of a night. It has really helped me. And as far as getting fret jobs many repair guys won't do partial fret jobs, it's all or nothing with many. Do not, I repeat, do not give these non-compromising thieves your business. Look around and find a repair  person who will do partial fret replacement/repair.  The guy that does my guitars charges me $12 a fret. I usually get no less than 5 done at a time and I'll tip him an extra $15. The tipping really ensures good, quality work. Ask around to find who the top players in your area use for their repairs and go with the folkes the top dogs use. Good luck

Hi there, I am a newbie around here, having never posted. By browsing over various posts, I can see that there are many people over here that know a lot more than I do concerning guitars. I have a nine year old son who would like to learn guitar. I don't think I'm ready to leave him alone with either of mine (a 1975 Gibson Hummingbird, and a 1979 Les Paul).  I have been checking Ebay for Baby Taylors, which seemed like it may be a good choice. What amazed me is how much they are selling for there. They are getting within 20 to 30 dollars of a new one, if you include the shipping charges. I'd like to spend a little as possible, but want a guitar easy enough for him to play, in the 300 dollars or less area. If anyone can give me their opinion, I would appreciate it.

Craig

Craig,
Have a look at some of the guitars on this site. I've bought many instruments from these folkes and they always come through in top rate fashion. Happy hunting..........

Jeff,
I sound like a broken record but here i go again. This is a very well written song. I'm getting, once again, an indication of John Prines' influence in your writing style, particularily in this song. Hope your wife isn't asking, "so who's number 2, 3, etc....?"haha  Thanks for sharing.

Mine is a simple yet effective bit of advice. Much like shooting pool(billiards). Don't think about the chord you are playing, instead think about the next chord you will be playing.  Visualize the next chord in your mind, apply, then repeat until the song is done. You're always one step ahead.
