Hey Zrizz,

Barre F right? I have been working on it for a long time.  I still don't have it down. Here's some tricks I've heard tho.

Get the big knuckle of your barre finger out in front of the strings and keep it even with your middle knuckle.

Pull with your fretting arm instead of squeezing with your hand. You'll have to pull your guitar into your body with your strumming arm to keep it still.

Try to roll your finger on it's side a little so it stays straight. If you try to play it flat your knuckles bend.

Try holding your guitar in a more classical style. Tilt the neck up so it gets your hand in a better position.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

That's the stuff I've heard and am trying.

Check out Justinguitar.com he has some good tips and lessons on it.

Ok, so I found something wrong with my newest additon. The rosette really got in the way of my strumming. I kept hitting it. It was about 1/8" thick and was stuck on with double sided tape. Kind of an after thought if you ask me, but it did look pretty cool. I think it was supposed to be some sort of pick guard also. So now it's just bare but it looks cool. I ordered a sheet of clear 20 mil static cling material that I'm gonna cut a pickguard out of and stick it on.

Hi All!!!

I just wanted to rub it in and make everyone jealous. New Guitar Day for me today!!!! My new baby is a Yamaha APX500 flamed maple in the blue burst. It's amazing how diff it sounds, feels, and plays than my Ibanez acoustic. Still have to pick up a few things for it, like an amp.

I spent a good hour and 1/2 at the music store sitting and playing what they had there to see what I liked and what fit me. I actually narrowed it down to 4 choices. I was surprised, seeing as how my budget was limited. My other choices were an Ibanez Aeg10, Ibanez Aeg20 flamed sycamore, and Fender Cd140sce. All of them would have fit me fine, my top 2 were the Yamaha and the Aeg10.

I a looking forward to playing it alot!!!!

Hello there Gus,

My advice would be to pick a song or 2 and learn those till you can play them really well. You can't advance in your playing if you don't establish a foundation. I know it's way more fun too learn new stuff all the time, but what good is it if what you learn doesn't sound like it could. At this point you should strive for consistency. Pick songs that you know and like. When I am learning a new song I strum it too death until I can strum without thinking about it, then I add in the singing. If it's a new strum pattern for you it will take a while but you will get it. After 2 1/2 years it shouldn't take long for you to go back to basics and strengthen your foundation.

Practice IS the only way to get better.

Don't get discouraged, you've stuck with it this long. We are all here for your support.

Thanks for hijacking my thread guys!!!! JK

So, if an amp is listed as just a combo amp then it's not an acoustic amp?????

Like the Fender Frontman, Marshall MG4 series, Line 6 Spider, those aren't acoustic amps right?

Hi All!!!!

Hope everyone had a blessed Christmas.

So what is the diff between a combo amp and an acoustic amp? Some websites list them differently. For an A/E what should one be looking for?

Thanks

I stand corrected. I had no idea you get an actual instrument for that cheap. I will have to keep Rondo in mind.

Are the guitars found at Rondo any good?

Hey there Steve, glad to see your still around (ocasionally).

I totally thought of the same thing you posted, but pro toys r us. A friend of mine has a 3 year old that is semi autistic. He loves the guitar. I'm trying to inspire his dad to play. Anyway, I thought that if the 3 year old wants to learn then he should pick up an inexpensive electric for him to start on. Seeing as an electric is supposed to be easier to play, fretting wise, and as an autistic child he might be a little rough with it. Child sized also.
I sorta think that stores like toys r us and even target, have instuments that would be fine for a child that shows some interest. Thet're inexpensive enough that if they don't stick with it then you haven't lost out on a huge investment. I can't imagine that they play very well, which would be a hinderance in learning. But I think they actually do serve a purpose.

Just my 2 cents

Welcome to Chordie!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this turns out to be a good thread. I'm kinda leaning toward an Ibanez A/E myself. Looking to make a purchase between now and Jan.

Let's see what everyone has to say.

I guess that's what I'm thinkin is less is more. wood by itself can be awesome looking. Some rosettes get too busy, pearl inlays have veins and what not in them. My guitar is black, (not my favorite color) has dots layed in the finger board, and just a few rings around the soundhole. Quite simple really.

Hello All!!!!

How come all acoustic guitars look the same? They do look pretty and I can appreciate the "art" side of them. But....pearl or abalone inlays, bindings and rosettes, they are all pretty much the same. I want to see some brushed aluminum or stainless steel inlays. That would be awesome.
Color wise I'm bored with black, natural and wood tones. I like the reds, blues and other colors I've seen.

Anyway just something I tought about.

Merry early Christmas to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does this mean no presents under the tree for you this year? And maybe next year too?

Congratulations on the new score. It makes us all a little excited to share in your joy. Maybe a little jealous too.

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking about going to a guitar show in so cal. in Jan. and was wondering about the vendors that are there.
Has anyone purchased a guitar fom a show?
Are the companies we know and love at these shows?
Lots of deals to be had?

This will be my first show. $15 just to get in. Kinda pricey if u ask me.

Hi All!!!!!!!!!!!

I've posted on this same subject before.

Zurf, as your words are very encouraging, for some of us they fall short. I can't pick out a strum pattern to save my life. I've been playing about a year now and it hasn't gotten any better. As for making up your own pattern, that doesn't work for some of us. I need to be shown how to do it. At this point I am incapable of putting something together and making it my own. I'm not musical enough to say let's see how this sounds.  Just like some people can listen to a song and hear a G chord or a C chord etc. One of those people I am not.

Pix has added lots of videos that show struming patterns. This is invaluable to me.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice gents.

Dfos,  I don't want to upgrade my cheapy that I have. Sure it works for me now, but it's a piece. I'm sure i can find something that plays nicer. The amp is a whole nother thing.

Pix, if you say it's good then I know it's good. But I still need to touch it. Never heard the name before. According to the website, I have no dealers in my area for Norman.

The search continues...........

Hi All!!

I'm gonna revive this thread and add to it.

I've only bought one guitar so I need some advice.

I'm looking for an acoustic elec. My local music shops are too expensive. That leaves me with 2 big chain stores that I know of and the internet. So, I'm planning to go to these 2 big stores and play lots of diff guitars. But how does it work when I'm ready to purchase?

A brand new guitar out of the box can sound and play diff than the one in the store that has been banged on by 50 people. Do they give me the used one in the store?

If a store orders it, it gets shipped to them. If I order it online, it gets shipped to me. So it's gonna get shipped one way or the other. I read a post somewhere about shipping turning out to be bad for a guitar.

I've seen quite a few guitars online that I would like to try out. If I can't find them in a store somewhere how do I get my hands on one?

I'm kinda leaning toward an online purchase after try outs. Has anyone had a bad experience with this?

Price is the #1 factor in choosing my next guitar. I just can't bring myself to (or afford) paying $300+ for a guitar. My wife won't let me either. I want something decent, but I'm not looking for the best. Right now I'm playing a $199 Ibanez that I bought 8 years ago. One of those acoustic starter packs off the shelf.

Anyway, lay your advice on me.

Huh????

Zurf, you must still be in a state of confusion from Russell's post on your Am7/G.

Is a power chord a regular chord? so it can be transposed?

Is this right:

Key of C
Dm E5no3 F G F G A G Bb

Key of D
Em F# G A G A B A C

Makes no diff anyhow, I can't play it either way.

Hi All!!!!

First of all what is the E5no3 chord.
Second how do I transpose it from the key of C to key of D?

Is that possible?
Btw, the song is Grace Like Rain by Todd Agnew.

Hi all!!!

I try various picks when I play.  I find myself going back to the Clayton "Spike" .73mm. I think the shape of it is what works for me. It has a sharper tip than most others I have.

Thanks Herb!!!!

I'll take it in before the year is up. All frets have been leveled, so I'm sure the action can be lowered like you said.

I won't touch the truss rod. Besides, the next is straight.

I thought that if the action was high then lowering it would only help.

So I measured and all the strings are exactly 1/8 at the 12th fret.

I think it could stand to be lowered, but I'll stick with it for now. When I get a new guitar then I'll take them both in. I found a local guy that works by appointment only and sits down with you and your guitar to make adjustments. Hopefully that will solve everything.

Thanks all!
