Jeff,
Just a suggestion. If I were you I'd somehow try to hide from your wife the songs you write inspired by her. Put them all on one CD and give it to her for a special occasion. (anniversary, birthday, etc) She must be a great person for you to create such beautiful tributes of song. Well done, again.

Hey Roger,
Congratulations on your new family member! That's a beauty of a guitar. 12 string guitars will suit your tenor voice and smooth, melodic songwriting superbly. I like the ocean green electric as well. Very pretty guitars. Thanks for sharing and enjoy.

Hi ghanlon,
I live on the other side of the Bay (Largo on the Gulf of Mexico) I play all of my gigs solo minus a percussionist/drummer from time to time. I can however, give you some contact names and numbers of club owners seeking live performers. Most all of the resort places in our area, unfortunately, are hiring musicians who play almost exclusively covers. There are a few holes locally that give players of original music but they usually don't pay anything. Send me some of your specs (song list, sound bites, asking pay fee) privately via e-mail and I'll do what I can for you. Welcome to Chordie and I'm sure our paths will cross soon.
Peace and Guitars,

Take 688 west all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and you're on Indian Rocks Beach. It's a small place and everything is easy to find.
MIDI Sampling... Those words to me are like long finger nails scraping down a chalk board.
Led Zeppelin;
vocals Robert Plant
drums John Bonham
bass and keyboards John Paul Jones
guitar Jimmy Page
No posers in this group...............or this one
RedHotChilliPeppers;
vocals Anthony Kiedis
drums Chad Smith
bass Flea
guitars John Frusciante
I'm not so closed minded to say turntable playing or MIDI sampling has no place in music, it does. It just ain't for me. I respect musicians who play their instruments and/or sing with their own voice. DJ's who push the on button and wiggle records back and forth just doesn't do anything for me. I guess I'm just old fashioned like that.
Dan-yell,
Whenever you encounter a split chord like F7/A the F7 represents the right hand on a piano and the A represents the left hand. So you'd play something like this (xO3210) or if you get in a real mess use this neat little resource;
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/
Open chords do have a fuller, fatter sound on acoustic guitar. I recommend getting a capo to play along with some of those 1/2 step tuning alterings or songs in #'s or flats. Eventually the barre chords and moveable chords will sound almost as full as the open chords but for the early and intermediate stages of learning guitar a capo is a great tool to have.

Then look at the tags. Hopefully at least one is in your price range. Yiu can't go wrong with the big names but I always think the one that feels right is the one for you. When your collection and skill level is more advanced then maybe a different approach but I like the blind test drive method myself..
My 2 cents for what they're worth (please note I am a cheap bastard so that could factor into my method)
Good info here from geoguitar. One additional thing I might do after playing the many various guitars in the store and you've found that 'magic guitar' for you is, go home and research the price on said guitar from many various locations. Print out the best advertised price, take it back to the music store you initially went, and see if they'll match the best price you found. It's worth a try at least. There's huge mark-up in musical instruments.

Newish emo-boy bands who wear eye-liner make-up on their eyes. Also, the black finger-nail polish on finger-nails is way over the top. If you or anyone you know is doing both or either of the afore mentioned thingies, stop or make them stop, now please! Some of the music coming from these bands are, at best listenable, as was some of the music from the glam rock hair bands of the 80's. But you gotta admit when you see these men dressed liked strippers tryin' to sound tough and cool, most of you laugh yer booties off and pay the music no mind upon initial onset of their appearances. "Those of us who don't learn from our pasts are destined to repeat it." Or something to that effect. Just be yourself, sing and play your instruments to the best of your abilities and leave the fashion trend crap to actors and models.....................
I like the turntable player in that band. (Lincoln Park) The way that dude pushes the on button and wiggles those records back and forth is utterly amazing!?!?!?! What a musician...........

Peace!
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Feelin' A Whole Lot Better by The Byrds or all Byrd's tunes
Life By The Drop by Stevie Ray Vaughan (great tune!)
.......and if you don't have a 12 string but want a similar effect, get yourself a chorus pedal a crank the depth setting and go mild on the speed setting...no chorus pedal? sit under a ceeling fan, low speed, almost the same effect to the person sitting underneath or nearby said fan..........
gitaardocphil wrote:If you read the top 10, 80% of the songs is like: 50cent ft Eminem, or Jay Z ft miss Eliott.
In fact a lot of X, ft Z.
What's the reason of all this?
You find them in every combination.
Strength in numbers i suppose. The rap "artists" sense that their product is on a rapid decline and the combining efforts with their peers is an act of desperation. How many ways can one say, "look at how much money I have and I'll shoot you if you disrespect me"? Society on the whole, I feel, is wise to the unitopical, self-grandiose attitudes. I'd like to think ,as a whole ,our universe has evolved beyond the gangster attitudes and scare tactics of the majority of these "artists". Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boyz, MC Young; that was good stuff. These guys had multi-topical content, real musicians playing along side them, and could make fun of others and themselves without fearing a coward poppin' a cap in day butts. The rappers of today; Eminem, 50 cent, Jay Z, Ludacris, and the like are all saying the exact same thing with a slightly variated delivery. I find it unlistenable........

It's actually a graphite guitar TD. Very similar in molecular make up.
This is so sad. A very similar illness that took his sight has now taken his life. What a horrible loss the world of music has suffered today.........Although Jeff didn't write Angel Eyes, John Hiatt did, Jeff made the song his own. He smoked on the guitar and had a golden voice. I feel very lucky and priviledged to have heard his gifts...................

I use Jim Dunlop thumb, finger, and flat picks. They're available in many shapes and sizes. You can order directly from their web-site or they'll give you the location of the dealer nearest to you.

topdown wrote:I'm considering purchasing a Composite Acoustics carbon fiber guitar and was wondering if anybody here owns one or has played one.
http://www.compositeacoustics.com/
Everything I have read about them has been extremely positive. The durability factor (never need to worry about a truss rod adjustment, or humidity or travel, etc.) is what is most attractive to me and they supposedly also sound fantastic. I'm going to go try some out next weekend - closest dealer is in the mountains, might as well make a weekend out out of it.
It just seems weird, there's something about a real wood guitar - a personality that I'm afraid I might miss in a piece of carbon fiber. Thoughts / opinions?
Topdown,
Since the majority of my gigs are outdoor in high heat and humidity I've seriously considered getting one of these carbon fiber guitars. I've researched them extensively and found this; unmiced, pure acoustic they don't have the sound quality of good wood acoustics. However, tuning is rarely an issue because the carbo fiber does not expand and constrict, as wood guitar do in heat/climate change. They are also a bit pricy but in time I think they'll be more affordable to the common man. Martin and Rainsong make the two that I've been looking into. The Martin is around $1,000 and the RainSong is around $2,500.
If one is going to mic a guitar from the front, I'd stay away from these guitars. But if one is running from internal electronics from withtin the guitar, as most people do, I loudly applaud these guitars.
Tennessee Strat wrote:Hey, I wasn't going to chime in with the Martin brand debate, but since we're now BMW bashing, I need to step in. I've had a BMW convertible for the past ten years. Still have it. The car never broke down, although I'm always buying tires for it. I'm no snob, but if you have ever driven a BMW, you know that they are fun to drive and are damn reliable machines. I can't wait for the new BMW model One to come out this year!
I have also owned (and still do) American cars and Japanese ones. And please don't remind me of the Pacer I once drove (it was a loaner, ouch!).
These cheesy boxes don't even compare when it comes to driving fun, quality and chick appeal. There is something about BMWs that attracts women just like my Fender American Strat. Both the Fenders and the BMW are quality instruments. Now go back in the garage and kick your Chrysler K car (or the plastic Mustang and Corvette.)
Play on!
Huh?! How dare you say bad things about my beloved Pacer. The Pacer is a sacred car in the world of rock-n-roll. Have you never seen Wayne's World? Besides that I once put a BMW emblem on the hood of my Pacer and people kept laughing at me so I removed the Beamer emblem. Now people only laugh at my bumper sticker on my 3/4 rust infested rear bumper which reads, " My other car is a BMW but it's in the shop." And I know what you're saying about Strats attracting women. Sometimes I'll go to the beach in my 1974 lime green terry cloth shorts, a "Let's Go Streaking" t-shirt and my John Deere hat lightly perched atop my cranium and just stand there holding my Strat in the air. Women flock to me like buzzards on stank......................................

Lieven,
The Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da song was about a highly popular, and powerful, type of acid(LSD) that was going around at the time. I heard this information straight from Ringo's mouth in an interview.
SGinCYQX wrote:Tibernius wrote:So the Martin owner is the BMW owner of guitars then...they don't buy it because it's good, they buy it so they can show off.
Odd how most of the people who claim that BMW owners buy their cars to show off with have never driven one or even had a good look at one.
Oh this is not true. Before my wife met me she drove a shiny black BMW. After we wed she got rid of the Beamer and we now proudly share a lime green and pale yellow 1974 AMC Pacer. The BMW used to break down 3 or 4 times a month, our Pacer only breaks down 1 or 2 times a month. So hah, there a first hand testimonial from an ex-BMW owner. Plus, the Pacer is much more comfortable to sleep in than BMW....................

I own a J-45 and my hands have touched many a fine guitar. None finer in my mind, or in my hands, than my Gibson J-45. It's the standard that most guitars attempt to attain, in my humble opinion of course. I'll never be so closed minded to realize that there are differing views but if I may pesuade an innocent mind and fresh pair of hands, I say, excuse me, I yell !, Gibson J-45. From the 1942 original at $45 then to the current 2008 model at $2K+ get one and you will be happy, I gay-run-tee-it!!! Yes 500, and that's conservative. I'm a pack rat like that. When i started playing harmonica 20 years or so ago I could get my Hohner Special 20's for a tad over 10 bucks per. Now I pay $17.58 plus tax and that's with my "buddy who runs a music store" discount. I use 5 harps regularly (C,D,E,G, and A) and they usually last about 4 weeks per harp. I used to get be lucky to get a week out of 'em before I started looping. Keep in mind I play 7-12 gigs a week, depending on how full the hotels are down here in sunny Florida. That's a lot of suckin' and spittin' in those harps. Eeek that sounds really bad but it's true. I rarely use bleach, peroxide, or any other chemical agent to clean my harps, just straight water and some good ole hard knee-slappin' the crud-out-of-'em.Maybe the ocassional splash of bleach to kill bacteria. I'm all about the new GREEN movement so my old harps could be my minute contributuion to a world-wide problem............. I'm still listening for any recycling suggestions.
Anyone know of places/persons that buy and refurbish used harmonicas? I have in excess of 500 spent harmonicas that I'm saving for someone to buy and repair or I'm gonna make a music related sculpture with 'em if I can't move 'em. I've heard tale of people fixing harmonicas but I've not been able to locate anyone/anyplace that's ligit.
