Hi All!!!!

The picks are in motion again. I just received the package today. Some very interesting stuff in there. Especially the picks with teeth marks in them, not. My son is enjoying the giant pick (4" long) and a finger pick. I took a few and added a few. Very cool that some of these items have seen so many miles around the world.

First to e-mail me gets it next.

Whoa Steve, you're way ahead of me here. I wouldn't have the time to take on something like this for a long long time. Besides, I had to save up for my lastest addition. Thers's no way I'm dropping another $300 + on a project.  Expenses and time aside, I would like to try my hand at a build. Maybe when I retire....if I retire.

Btw, good to hear from you. Last we talked, playing time was eluding you. I hope you've had more time lately and are back to playing.

Hi All!!!

Just for the heck of it I looked into an acoustic guitar kit to build. I thought maybe someday I would like to try building one. WOW, I have a new found respect for anyone who can build a guitar. The amount of time and patience that must go into a build is mind-blowing. I am in construction and build my own furniture as well as some stuff for my cutomers, but man, when looking at a raw kit I second guess taking on a job like that. Has anyone had experience with building a guitar? It would be an amazing and satisfying accomplishment.  A kit costs more than I paid for each of my guitars that I have now. Maybe someday.

Those are all great lists. Lots of names I've never heard. I too have my favs form week to week or day to day, But....

I'm talking about favorite of "ALL TIME". Songs that have stuck with you for as long as you can remember. Songs that take you right back to the place you first heard them. Songs that still give you goose bumps when you hear them today.

Hi Joe, welcome to Chordie.

DDUUDU is the most used strum pattern so there are lots of songs that can be played with it.

Stand By Me - Ben E King
Last Kiss _ Pearl Jam
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
All For You - Sister Hazel
Love Me Do - Beatles

That's all I have on my setlist with that strum
Good Luck

Hi Tosh!! Welcome to the forums.

If you know when things went wrong, go back to what was working. Things don't all of the sudden go bad, unless you had a lapse of time not playing. At 2 months in you will have lots of struggles. Everything new presents a challenge, but that's how you get better. Look at what you have learned in 2 months. Think of what you'll be able to do in another 2 months.  Try to remedy your issues. You know how to hold your guitar, you've been doing it for 2 months. If your strings are suspect, change to a lighter gauge and have your giutar set up. Your fingers will get numb while calluses are building. This doesn't last very long tho. Whatgever you've been learning, make sure you know it VERY well before moving ahead. It is important to have a good base to build on. Just keep at it and you'll get through it.

Ok, so I understand the whole learning different fingers for open chords to make the barres easier to get to, BUT.... why learn new fingering and barre chords when you could just learn barre chords. Seems like takeing two steps back to get one step forward. New fingerings will only make barres easier to get to not easier to play (make sound good).

You have to learn those fargin bastage barre chords anyway which is a daunting task on it's own. On top of that you want to go back and learn your open chords again? I'm not too sure I want to pursue that.

My thoughts anyway.

I agree with Jerome. My acoustic was "screwed" up by my local guitar shop. I could almost stick a pencil between the strings and the fretboard at the 12th. I was still able to play it though. I originally took it in because I'm a noob and I thought they could make to easier to play. Unless your guitar is way out of wack then I would get to strumming that thing.

Wow, no one huh? That's ok bcuz I just received it today. This is my first amp and I think it's cool. I have no idea what a good amp is supposed to sound like, but I like it. It was well cared for and looks brand new. I got a decent deal on it an I'm sure it's better than a 10 watt practice amp.

Anyway, thought I'd share my NAD.

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the great Chordie community!!!!

We were all in your shoes when we started. How do I get this "thing" called a guitar to make pretty sounds?
It sounds like your looking in all the right places, but you won't find anything to advance your playing except for PRACTICE. If your having trouble with chord changes then that is what you need to focus on right now. Pick 2 chords like the ones from the songs you were trying out. Start slow and keep repeating the change until it rings true. Then speed up a little at a time. It doesn't come overnight, but the more time you put in, the faster you should advance.

As far as strings, steel strings are harder to learn on, but will toughen up your fingers quicker. Try changing to light or xtra light strings, these will be easier to fret as you don't have to push down as hard. I don't have any experience with nylon strings.

Remember PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Hey Steve!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for another strum pattern, you are awesome.

Brown eyed girl is my favorite song of all time. I can actually play that one too.

Right now I'm kinda trying to learn the 12-bar blues. Very cool stuff if you can work it out. I'll get there sooner or later.

Wow Pix,

That's a definate project guitar. Not many people would take on that sort of task. So if you picked it up for $250 in that shape, what would one in good shape go for?

Hi All,

God Bless the USA - Lee Greenwood

If your an American you should know how to play this song. I've asked about a strum pattern to this but no responses, that's why I don't know it YET.

Hello all,

Anyone have experience with this amp?

Hi all,

Ok, when you want something on Ebay do you place a bid when it still has days left or wait until the last minute? I ask because it really bugs me that people bid when there is lots of time left. All it does is make the price go up. If nobody bid until the last few seconds then things would be way cheaper. It all comes down to a bidding war at the 10 second mark anyway. I understand that an auction can be ended at any time, no bids could cause this to happen. But I think the majority of people let their auctions run the duration.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

What are your thoughts?

Hi all!!!!

Just got back form taking my 2 guitars in to be setup. Well 1 setup the other a repair. The dude was awesome. He has been playing for about 50 years. Plays numerous instruments in a band. Used to teach music at University Ca Riverside. He spent an hour working on my guitars. $40 out the door. He also explained alot about how guitars work and how things should be set up. I would definately take my stuff in to him again if needed.

Funny thing, he is also way into model trains. That totally fits because of the intricate natureof a guitar and model trains. Very cool guy. He even invited me and my son to a train show if my son is interested.

If anyone is in the so cal. area and is interested, let me know.

Sorry Gabe 4 hijacking your post.

Nela,

I think it's awesome that you are giggin after being self taught. Whatever works for you keep doiing it. I hope I'm that good when I hit 4 years. I've only been at it for a little over a year now. Self taught also. Actually, not SELF taught, I steal songs from youtube.

I guess it struck me funny when you said "if you cannot do this you can't begin to play". I play and I cannot do this. That was my point. I do strum along to songs when I'm driving just like you, but I can't put that to work with a guitar in my hand. Things don't sound like I want them to. I too don't have an ear for music and the only keys I know are the ones I use to start my truck or get in the front door.

Anyway, we all have diff ways of doing it. The important thing is that we are doing it and keeping music alive.

NELA wrote:

Listening to the song, counting the "beats" and developing the "pattern"  is just as important as practicing chords and scales. If you cannot do this you can't begin to play. Nela

Nela, I disagree with this statement if you are talking about just playing songs. I don't play guitar, I play songs. (Zurf has explained the diff before) So scales and developing patterns doesn't rank all that high on my list. I'll admit I have put together a pattern or two by watching diff videos to get 1 that suited me, but just listening and picking it up, doesn't work for me. I know I've posted on this same subject a few times. Some of us just are talented enough, don't have an ear for it, or aren't learned enough to "feel" things out. I need to be shown how to do it. Besides, a single guitar can't emulate an entire band, so if I'm lacking the "feel" gene then my version won't sound like I want it to. Some of us just need to be handed these things on a silver platter in order to attain what we want. We do appreciate all that you veterans do for us. Without you there would be a few less guitars being strummed.

Welcome Gabe,

I use Youtube as my go to resource for learning. Therea are lots of videos out there by very good teachers. They cover more than you can get by looking at a single page. Just put in "guitar lesson" or "how to play guitar" with the song title.

Hi All!

Don't know if this is in the right forum, move it if need be.

Just got home from the Texas Amigos guitar show in Costa Mesa, Ca. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It was basically a gathering of music stores and guitar makers from across the country. It was very old high end stuff. 80% Gibson I would say. Walking from the parking lot we ran into a lady toting a 66 Fender that she wanted to sell for about $3000. No vendors, no free stuff, no "newest biggest thing" to look at. It was good to go to once, but I won't go again. I was expecting it to be a smaller NAMM show for the public. Anyway, that's my report.
