Here's a little slow blues thing that most any daddy can identify with . . . Luckily, my daughter is so confident and pretty and smart that she scares away most guys.

Re: Do you need to sing to play guitar ? (17 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Yes, a chronic sinus problem can affect the tone of your speaking and singing voice. Sinuses are basically hollow parts of your head that work like resonating chambers (same as the body of an acoustic guitar) to modulate the tone of your voice. Holding your nose shut while speaking changes (or should change) the sound of your voice because it is bypassing the sinus cavities.
If you have a lingering sinus infection, or allergic reactions that just won't ever go away you should discuss the situation with a physician - - - problems inside your head are nothing to ignore.
Some sinus problems can be easily relieved with over-the-counter medications . . . but find out what the source of the problem is before you start self medicating. James

Re: old scotish song[t:title:OH DANNY BOY] (1 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Hello daddcool - I took the liberty of correcting the coding so that 'Danny Boy' would show up all nice & purdy like. Although this forum is intended for original songs, I shall allow this one to remain for 2 reasons: 1) It is way out of copyright, so no legal problems, and 2) The story behind the song is a fascinating peek into the history of popular music.
Here is a Wikipedia link to an article about this beloved lyric and 'Londonderry Air' the tune it is most often set to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Boy
There are also several intersting links at the end of the article to sound files and other references materials.
Those of us who try to write songs will enjoy reading about how this song survived to be so well known. James

Re: Do you need to sing to play guitar ? (17 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hello hopeful - and sorry that you are so frustrated. The source of your 'no volume' problem is probably 'no air'. Old Doll is right on the money with the yoga breathing . . .
Seems hard to believe, but many people don't really know how to breathe fully. Your lungs and gut and throat and mouth and sinuses are all part of your voice. A vocal coach can help you with the basics - very much worth a try. James

Re: Do you need to sing to play guitar ? (17 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Sorry, was interrupted before I could finish previous post . . . begin by learning how to produce a steady tone with your voice. Long tones - find your resonance - open your throat - relax and let the air flow in and out. Then work on 'rollercoaster' tones with your voice slowly going up and down. Breath from the gut - relax your belly to inhale.
Singing takes strength and finesse to produce and project a tone. Get comfortable with the sound of your own voice - it is a unique instrument, so don't try to make it sound like somebody else.
Build your poise and confidence and 'sing out' - like you are aiming your voice at a target 10 feet away (not 3 inches in front of your face). People who don't (or can't) sing are the quickest to criticize - so focus on developing your technique (not on their negativity).
Singing is fun. Playing is fun. Singing and playing together is absolutely wonderful - keep at it and enjoy the process. James

Re: Do you need to sing to play guitar ? (17 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Singing takes practice. It is all about air - don't hunch over your guitar. Sit or stand up straight and get enough air inhaled to make a steady tone. It takes effort to make it sound effortless . . .

How about 'Odd Riffs' - maybe also too strange?

Re: Do you play from your heart or just because you know how? (33 replies, posted in Electric)
I also play from the heart - music is a means to express emotion, passion, humor, and joy. The technical stuff is only useful if it helps a player become more expressive. I would much rather hear people playing & singing music with great gusto (and maybe a few flubs) than hear someone rattle off a technically perfect but expressionless notes.
I have heard players that are technically amazing, but musically boring. They seem only interested in dazzling other musicians with their technical prowess. A friend refers to this kind of playing as "talent attacks". James

Re: Print chords (7 replies, posted in About Chordie)
Hello Paula and welcome to the chordie forum! Sorry you are experiencing frustration trying to do a simple thing - a couple of basic questions.
First, are you certain that your printer has blue ink? If not, then the chords just won't show.
Second, are you trying to print using the 'print song' icon at the right side of the song's page? If you try to print some other way, you will probably get gobbledeegook . . .

Re: Rainsong Guitars - Any good? (21 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
No - I'm not one for instrument worship . . . if it sounds good, it is good. I don't care what the brand name or material might be. If a 'new' material can be utilized to make a better mousetrap then I'm not going to get all sobby about the old mousetraps.
A musical instrument is simply a tool that enables the user to make air vibrate. If a better sound can be obtained from a different material, then use the different material.
Nobody writes with fountain pens anymore because they are hard to use and messy. They did however produced a distinctive 'look' that some people might appreciate. Nonetheless, what was actually written with the fountain pen is far more important than the tool used to make the writing.
My guess is that carbon fiber instruments (and ceramics, and new alloys, etc) will offer tremendous advantages for instrument builders and players. Give it enough time and somebody will eventually be mourning the passing beauty of the 'old carbon-fiber guitars'. James

Re: "Only the Lonely" by The Motels (3 replies, posted in Song requests)
Thanks Badeye, but it is a different song . . .
Probably the reason The Motel's song is not up on the web is that it is primarily a keyboard-based song.
Here is a link to a video of the song on youtube - you will remember it as soon as you hear the first 3 notes.

Re: Rainsong Guitars - Any good? (21 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
WOW! I had not heard of these insturments before reading your post. Googled up the company at http://www.rainsong.com/ and am very intrigued.
As a cyclist I am familiar with carbon fiber frames and components used in bicycles - it is truly mind-boggling stuff. Its incredible strength seems to be way out of line with its mass. Carbon-fiber bikes are amazingly strong and light.
Wood is a convenient building material only because it grows on trees. But it suffers from many problems regarding uniformity, moisture, temperature, etc.
Building an instrument from a stable, strong, and inert material like carbon fiber makes great sense - hooray for Rainsong! I hope this innovative company is successful in marketing this pioneering application of carbon fiber.
Glad to see that a luthier has finally entered the 21st century. Will they also be making ukuleles, violins, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, etc.? James

Re: age (77 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm 50 and 7/12ths. Would like to think that I'm wiser than I once was - and hoping to get even wiser!
Regarding age of chordie users - keep in mind that persons active in the forum are not necessarily an indicator of all users of the site. However, it interesting to note that the '100 Most Popular' list on the front page is full of songs that I have on vinyl. That indicates to me that there are alot of other site users 'of a certain age' (or, lots of younger users who have an appreciation for 'oldies'.) James

Re: Posting Songs (8 replies, posted in About Chordie)
I second what Roger has said - moving a song into your songbook prior to editing is the most efficient method. Once you have made your changes, simply go back to the chordie index, open the original song listing, hit the 'correct' button, and then replace the original with your improved version (copy/paste).
Seems tedious, but it helps ensure that corrected versions are actually improvements rather than quickie hack-jobs. Once you get the hang of editing and correcting songs, it is easy and very helpful to other users. James

Re: BEGINNING (7 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hello jnra1 and welcome to chordie's forum! Rhythm is one of those things that comes with experience (practice practice practice). Don't be afraid to just thrash away at it and experiment boldly.
If you get too hung up on making it sound exactly like a particular recording, then you will always be a little too timid to have fun. Chordie's transposing tool is very good for moving songs into a comfortable key - so use it whenever you can.
Here is songbook that has several really fun & easy songs.
"3-Chord Rock & Roll Relics" might suit your needs:
