I thought it was just me. Glad to know I'm not the only one with perennial percussion problems. Hey! I can't find a drummer. I got P3.

High pitched whistling, crackle, reduced output and generally less impressive sound quality are what I listen for. smile

EDIT:

After additional thought, here's the decision tree I use:
- Does the noise happen with multiple cables?
- Does the noise happen with multiple guitars?
- Does it happen when you bypass pedals and effects?
(If the answer is "no" to either question, it's probably not the tubes.)

- Does the noise happen when you turn dials or wiggle your cable whilst it's plugged into the amp?
(If yes, it's likely not the tubes.)

- Does it get worse as your amp heats up?
- Can you hear it even when your guitar volume is rolled to zero?
(If yes, it may be the tubes.)

Thanks all.  We got out of Iowa just before the snow.

Wow. What a show.  Can’t say enough good stuff about these guys and gals.

So excited! Wife and I are flying up to Iowa to see my favorite band, Tedeschi Trucks.  The show is tonight and we are way up front.

As if that wasn’t enough to look forward to,  I get to see Tedeschi Trucks band again next month in DC with Zurf and the lovely Mrs Zurf.

Sara is awesome
that cover of Dock of the bay is fantastic !
That led me to watch about 5 other videos of her. She is awesome.
Elton John said her cover of Yellow brick road was the best he had ever heard.
Thanks for sharing
Jim

She does have some originals too, and I think she wrote or was involved in writing them, but not having the liner notes to check I'm not sure.
"King of Anything" and "I Choose You" are the ones I think she's had the most commercial success with.

Brave is also a good song. Great message. And she covers In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, very cool version.

BGD ... there's a thread in the "Bands & Artists" section called "Excellent Cover Bands" ... it could certainly use a refresh:

The Counting Crows do some great covers. Here are
Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_cao5y1SoU
Friend of the Devil (Dead) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcpwFXz4gQ

I also love this Dave Matthews Whiter Shade of Pale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OBgOmLopm0

I like story telling songs that have a good story to tell.

I like melody with a tight rhythm group and a bass groove. Even mellow music, which is primarily what I listen to, should have a bass groove if I'm going to like it. The better the groove and tightness of the rhythm section, the less I need the lyrics to tell a poignant story. The ultimate example of this is that I love Tower of Power's instrumentals.

I don't need the performer to have written the music. There are many good covers out there (example: I prefer Jose Feliciano's version of Light My Fire to The Doors version and I prefer Joe Cocker's version of She Came In Through The Bathroom Window to The Beatles' version), and there are some excellent song-writers I'd just as soon not listen to (Leonard Cohen comes to mind) and some excellent performers who don't write their own music (Randy Travis' big hits early in his career were written by Paul Overstreet).

Much modern Pop music does not have these features, and so I don't much care for it. Vanessa Carlton and Sara Bareilles are two current "radio" pop singers whose music I do like - or at least some of it. However, the music has the features I've mentioned.  Here's a cover by Sara Bareilles where she just knocks it out of the park, in my opinion. She is the rhythm section and bass, but still...

I love good covers!

Maybe we should start a new thread for sharing our favorite covers.

Dusting off this topic...
Going to spend New Year’s Day gauging down from 11-12 heavy bottoms to 9 heavy bottoms. Will use lighter picks, lots more economy of motion and a lighter touch in an effort to improve tone, sustain, and phrasing.

General likes: Uplifting music, technical skill balanced with good feeling, funk, swamp rock, folk, soul, and hip hop using real instruments. Harmony. Composition.
General dislikes: overprocessed and computer music, dark/depressing/gloomy music, screaming, technical music that sacrifices feeling (eg yngwie)

I go with whatever the house back line has. Teaches me to play under unknown and sometimes adverse conditions.  smile

For those of you who play both, what if any are the major differences between your acoustic and electric technique?

I tend to do 95% of my practice on an acoustic, so I've been stringing my electrics heavier and heavier to try to replicate the acoustic feel. It's getting to the point where string bending is a challenge and I'm constantly whacking the crap out of the strings, which results in a lot of tension, overplaying and fatigue. I'm playing 11ga heavy bottoms right now and was thinking about moving to 12s.)

I'm now considering reversing that - going to super light strings on the electrics (9ga heavy bottoms), playing way softer and lighter, more economy of motion, and almost treating electric and acoustic like two different instruments, at least from the standpoint of technique.

What do you think?

Even though there are some genres I don't generally like, I always seem to find an outlier artist or two that I really enjoy. Maybe I gravitate to talent regardless of genre, not sure.

- Not huge into rap but Matisyahu is fantastic. He uses lots of live instruments and sings a lot. His lyrics are inspiring and uplifting. Here he does some singing, some beatboxing, and some reggae:

- Not into heavy metal but I think System of a Down is fantastic and singer/writer Serj Tankian is one of the most gifted composers I've ever heard.

Now that you’re living up to the strummin nickname and sharing your music with us, I’m wondering if we can get you on skype for our next evening jam.  Do you have Skype and a video camera?
