I should probably take my own advice!

Finally, all the administrative stuff is done and it's time to say goodbye to the family. On Monday, I will make my way to Washington, D.C to begin the next chapter of my career and life. I feel both excitement for the new opportunity and sadness as I leave the family behind. As with most things, worrying about it is far worse than the reality. At least I hope this applies here.

I will live out of a hotel for about 10 days and in that same time I will find a long-term living arrangement. I've have some help from my colleagues in D.C. and I've placed an ad on Craig's List. In one day I've already received several responses none of which jump out at me but who knows. Although I am a fan of CL and long-time user, this is the first time I've used it to try to find a place to live.

See you on the other side!

Making the decision is the hardest part. Run, don't walk, to this new opportunity. Good luck.

I've been through a similar situation this year. The result, for me, was I am staying I the same line of work but I am moving to Washington, D.C. Without my family...for the time being. Your transition will require creativity, flexibility, friends, family, a professional network, and, as Zurf suggests, Faith.

I always try to work in the job I have while keeping an eye on the next job I want. This has been helpful even when the timing gets jumbled or compressed by someone else.

I recommend building a profile on LinkedIn.com. I am there and this site helps me manage my professional network while giving and receiving help.

Good luck,
Dj

I've answered this one before, on this forum I believe, and my answer remains "naolslager" was derived with the help of a Ouiji board, friends, and adult beverages.

Offer's good for you too naoslager.  E-mail me or Skype me if you'd like to talk about some different neighborhoods or areas you're thinking about staying in.  Will you be staying in hotels, or will you be renting a room somewhere?  Are you planning to bring family up eventually, etc.  Don't put that personal information in Chordie - but if there's anything I can do to help ease your transition, I'm eager to help.

Zurf,
I plan to rent a small apartment. My wife and I considering moving to the area maybe as early as this year but it will be summer at the earliest.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome to DC. You are lifting my spirits as I am torn over leaving the family behind.

My original plan was to be in DC on the 6th. Right now I am not confident it will be that soon. Since I am moving to DC I will bring a guitar. I wouldn't think of traveling without one.

P.s. Beer or wine? Yes.

Thanks. I wanted to play the guitar for years. For the last five or so I have taught myself only to discover that I really need to be able to sing. I'm considering making 2014 the year of the song (and singing). I am terrified.

Yep, that's an Art & Lutherie 12 string, and a disaster. No longer a solid cedar top!

I may be wrong but I think the chord shapes are the same for drop D tuning.

2014 brings with it a new job for me. The job is in the Washington, D.C. area. My family and I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia. My son, and youngest child, will graduate from high school in May so my family will remain in Atlanta. A tough but necessary choice. Eventually my wife and I may commit to DC and move there, planting both feet, or maybe I should say both sets of feet.

2013 was a helluva year for me with much excitement but also with much tumult and strife. My job change, my achieving the half a century mark, health issues, on top of the routine life challenges. The only way I was able to work through this was with the help of my family, friends, and a huge, albeit sometimes wavering, faith.

Washington, D.C. offers endless opportunities for my line of work and it has always been my thought I would end up there. I did not plan on it being NOW but the rug was snatched from under me and here I go. At least I had options.

I thank God everyday for my family, friends, and options. I am a blessed man. Having faith makes life so much easier.

I am looking forward to a great 2014 and I wish the best for all of you, your families, and your endeavors.

I don't play the piano and I've never heard of this brand but the story sounds familiar. I bet Martin, Taylor, Gibson, and Guild can sympathize.

I am skeptical of anything promising to be "everlasting". Just look what Willie Wonk'a Everlasting Gobstopper did to Violet Beauregarde!

p.s. strings are an affordable way to experiment.

A friend sent me the link. I was pleasantly surprised to discover I know the band director! I haven't seen him since 2005 but I dug up his email and sent him a note. Small word.

Welcome back! I am not a player by any stretch of the imagination but I do try to at least pick up a guitar daily. Enjoy.
