It looks like injurys ( though self inflicted ) are more of a problem than one would have thought .  As i have said before - the only good thing to come out of it is to realise that as an individual playing the instrument you are not the only one suffering from one form of pain or the other .  I would have put the pain in the finger tips as a normal expected  pain - but shoulder pains and back pains ? .  All i can say is that at least we know that it a common problem, and perhaps trying a different posture knowing that the future of playing depends on it may help . I wonder how many players have suffered , thinking they were the only ones with problems ? .

forgive me for using the age thing here - but i can remember THE MONKEES  pretending to play and people in the background doing the work - is that when it started ? That would have been 40 years ago so its not to new. It was headline news at the time that a band would be driven by outside factors .

thanks for the reply gp - i didnt know how you would take it, but it seems you took it positive . the main thing is to realise you are not on your own in the way you are thinking. everybody feels down - all of us to a certain extent in different ways. i know its easy to say , but try to use it in a positive way - and i guess in your case use music to get your feelings accross so it reaches others so they in turn can realise they too can express themselves . fight and show the real you inside . you will get your stuff recorded and i for one cant wait to hear it ( though i will be critical if needed  - i dont think you would  want anything less) . dont forget - relax and use the music as a hobby .

Also - as an aside , I was told to do this many years ago and finally decided to do it from this week .  I am not going to record any songs done from any artist at all - they dont play mine so why should i play theirs.  I will use chord riffs and practice them - but i dont care how bad my songs are - then its only my stuff i will be using . i notice that certain members on here seem to already bide by that rule and good on them ! ( except for goldwatch blues which was the first song i ever learned from my inspiration to ( try) play " donavan" who lived 1 mile up the road from me ).

That is the challenge ken - how many times have we suddenly heard a song that is done accoustic that was previously done by a band ? - and we think - that sounds good , why didnt I think of that ! . have i the answer ? no .... I just sit back and say to myself i wish i had thought of doing it like that . also - i think if we thought the audience was actually listening to the way we are doing accoustic it would help . I was outside the blues bar on the Barbican (plymouth) the other night ( i was in my cab working ) watching a guy play his heart out and it was good stuff - but I noticed not one person was listening - the "audience " were just there to chat to each other cos its the place to be . so - i think its a matter of playing most songs accoustic - but playing it to the right audience who want to hear it. An obvious observation i know , but I think sometimes as musicians we want the whole place to suddenly liven up to what we are doing - but they wont . We have to be very choosy who we decide to listen to us . ( good lord ! after reading this a i dont know whether ishould post it or not - but what the heck ) .....

you got to remember there are a lot of people worse off than you . i understand its hard for you - but when i was in hospital feeling sorry for myself ( broke my leg in 3 places last october after an incedent with a passenger ) there were kids above me in a different ward suffereing from a lot more . a freind died one night while working as a cab driver ( so am i ) i found him and 3 others dead - they all had kids left behind . this is only music and a hobby that should give you a release . be gratefull for the wheelchair - there are a lot of people gone who would like to be here whether in a wheelchair or not .

just trying to be helpfull here - i had no idea what the boss thing was so i checked it on the web . i see it is capable of doing multi tracks which you can then choose the best one to use . perhaps these extra tracks you have are these ? so - in other words perhaps you have not got rid of the "takes " that are not needed ? . its just a wild guess ..... tell me to shut up if need be .

sorry - one day later i stand corrected . that is , i read the websites 8 tracks being divided into 64 subsequent track and able to store them and choose the best track later on is not possible . thank you to the member who pm me for the correction.

in the accoustic section on here there is a thread called "injury" - may not be a lot of help in itself - but certainly makes you realise that you are not alone in problems with the guitar etc...

Some great answers ! . What made me think of the Tibet thing is that when i was younger there were loads of singers and bands ( and poets ) who would be heard all over the world at the merest hint of a conflict or political claptrap etc. But now its as if the statements of music have changed - gone stale . Singers used to lead the protests and tried to change things - but where are they now with so much going on ? .  I wonder if John Lennon would have stayed so quiet if he was still here .

The first song that comes to mind for me is "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel.

I agree that there are quite a few songs that speak about politics or have a political undertone. I don't have a problem with it cause I think every person should have the right to peacefully speak there opinion. However, there are people out the that are so very narrow-minded and get upset if someone has a different opinion than them. Exhibit A - Toby Keith and Dixie Chicks spat. I laughed through the whole ordeal cause it was like I was watching an episode of "Rednecks Gone Wild"! LOL

Thanks for the link - stuff i would never have seen otherwise  ....

Am I wrong ? /  ( I LOVE YOU TO BITS ALVEE ) or is this hijacking a thread ? ... sorry alvee - but i just find this one out of place . and if your sorry about hijacking then dont dont do it ...

Quite a big thing starting here ( in the UK  at least ) is the TIBET and THE OLYMPICS - anyone got any songs for or against ? Dont forget - we are supposed to be the freedom singers and while not bringing polotics into a place like this ( though half the worlds best songs are ) - it is a world wide thing which is happening .....

Born in 53 in england my first songs i ever heard on the radio were a skiffle band called "lonnie donegan" who covered a lot of american stuff.  - i was about 5- 6 years old .We had radio programmes more dedicated to light music and kids storys and songs by Doris day ( i sent in a request for one of hers for my mum )
Us - the british public were witheld from more raunchy stuff for many years by the government. The beatles really shook the established world ( over here ) and it could not be contained from then on . THE FIRST SONG ? SHE LOVE YOU .

Anyone of a similar age will never - ever forget - that a feeling came over everyone that music would never - ever - ever be the same again . From that came offshore radio stations that the government tried to ban - the rest is history .....

A NICE MENTION FOR RADIO CAROLINE WOULDNT GO AMISS HERE .....
OR  RADIO LUXEMBOURG WHO INFRILTED THE AIRWAVES EVENTUALY MAKING THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT CONCEDE THAT PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR MORE ........

I think along these lines ... anyone who is even trying at anything ( whether sport or music or anything at all ) has it . Doesnt matter if they are the most rubbish exponent of whatever form they are trying - the very fact they are trying at all puts us all in the same club . Its just a matter of how much skill they have . I see grown men on sunday mornings after a night on the beer trying to play football ( soccer) and they can hardly run or kick a ball accurate , but they are all out there dressed up having as much fun as if they were in a big stadium. Same with music . The only ones that dont "have it " are the ones that dont try .

Hello all. I have a question regarding injuries.  One of my fingers has a cut on it, and I was wondering what is the best way to proceed in playing guitar with something like this (wow.. kind of a silly question).

I don't want to stop practicing, yet it's really painful, and in fact I can barely use the finger at all (it's the index).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
anastasia

glad someone mentioned injury - i got to sue myself for RSA - my left shoulder aches really bad after a few days playing and i have to rest it for 2 or 3 days . it never used to when i was younger - also the fingers on the left hand get tired more easy . i suppose its an injury ? anyone else suffer RSA because of instrument playing ? ( thinking about it - i remember nigel kennedy - violin player - has a great big callous under his neck )

doc to play an electric sccustic with more volume invites feedback problems they make a rubber disk that fits over the sound hole and reduces the feedback allowing you to pump the volume up more

sorry - i think i may have got it wrong , its that i thought you was trying to keep the natural acoustic sound through speakers or amps etc rather than a mix of electric and acoustic .

I should mention that if you want to just try an exspensive radio mic ( or other broadcast equipment ) then many radio and tv stations hire the gear out on a daily basis . over here in plymouth uk i can rent one mic and reciever for 60 pounds per day or 90 pounds for a broadcast quality mixer to match ( BBC - SEYMOUR ROAD - PLYMOUTH )- so with the mixer you could use headphones to monitor exactly what the pa would be putting out instead of hiring the pa as well . it might seem exspensive - but its a good way to spend the day experimenting without laying out a load of dosh and regregiting it ...

you could always try a radio mic and reciever - we use to use ones that cost a thousand pounds back in my tv sound recording days - dont bother trying a cheap one . a bit of fiddling inside the guitar with a small peice of foam and some strong tape and a nice p.a system. if its studio perfection you want , then on your own without any sound engineers to constantly monitor is always going to be difficult . also - i wouldnt worry to much anyway - even the best classical guitarists still have sqeaks and noises - even on studio recorded material.

Just out of interest, what do you guys use to record? I only have a small PC mic and it tends to sound pretty naff. Or maybe that's just me.

hi alvee33 - i dont know if this will help but i use a usb mic called " QIU USB DYNAMIC RECORDING MIC" . i only do a bit of home recording but the results it gives me isbetter than the standard pc mic . i got it from a website that dedicates itself to pc music related items . it also came with a nice desktop stand and music editing software . the software is equal to the software i actualy paid 80 pounds for . in no way do i try to record proffesional - its just a way to see how i sound etc ... but the results satisfy me . the site is http://www.musiconmypc.co.uk/shopping_cart.php
