I find the maths/music link to be fascinating. As a rule if you are good in maths, you should be good in music. There are exceptions,as with everything. And when I say maths, I don't mean trig and geometry and algebra. I mean logic. You need a logical, anilitical mindset to master maths. Just so with music. ( I know what you're thinking...mind, what's that? and where do I get one? )
As to the drums, I know that in Africa the drums were used as a means of comunication between various tribes. Could they have the same purpose in a battle?

Hey David,
I just might do that. I actually met him when I was still in school a few years back. He was released in my final year and I was still a member of the national youth orchestra. We played at a function for him and he took the time to come and say howzit to us. As I had just won a prestigious music scholorship he chatted to me for almost 30mins about music. It was cool, to say the least.
and hey, I'd rather be pissed off than pissed on!

Nadine
I'm sorry if I offended you, but I can't see why it was offensive, I Know that irony sometimes doesn't work and obviously this time I failed.
Nelson Mandela is one of my all time heroes, ( I'm looking at his picture now alongside Mother Theresa on my laptop wallpaper) and that's why I chose his name.
I was trying to compare him to Hendrix, another personal hero.
Whether you like Hendrix or not isn't important, he is just a guy that you cannot dismiss rather like Mandela.please accept my apologies
David
hey David,
Thanx, but no real harm done. I do actually understand irony...even on my blonde days! It just seemed as if you were making light of all he did for us a country and people, but I can see now you're actually sincere. But hey, this is a place for music not politics, so let's just rock on. I went and listened to some Hendrix now and he was an extraordinary artist. wasn't he? Maybe not everyones cup of tea (certainly not mine) but undeniably he had a passion for his music.

Who is Madiba ?
And why is South Africa off limits ?
cheers
David
Hey David,
Madiba IS Nelson Mandela. It's what we call him. South Africa is not off limits, I personaly just found the remark offensive.

I had to cross post this because you may not have looked at paranormalguitar's thread on Van Halen.
Hendrix, "not really very good actually"
Which 'shit for brains' wrote that ?
That's like saying "Einstein, sort of understood a bit of physics, but over estimated himself".
or
"Pele, kicked a ball around but didn't quite get the point of soccer"
or
"Nelson Mandela, read a few things about politics and racial discrimination and had a go at sorting things out in South Africa"I'm just off for a cold shower ...
shouldn't we all be allowed our own likes and dislikes? Hendrix was a dam good guitarist but personaly I never really liked his stuff. I prefer eric clapton.
Oh and ...leave Madiba and south africa out of your guitar bickerings.

Will you be my friend, I don't have any on Chordie. Is that even possible? Myeh never mind.
If you want, disregard me and/or annoy m I don't care.I just want to add I don't practice witchcraft, as many will tell you.
well if you are studying anything to do with the paranormal, I'll send you a copy of me playing guitar...I'm fairly sure I'm channeling the bard from Asterix and Obelix.

Does anyone know what this song is called?
Only lyrics I can remember:
"Here comes a man, holds out his hand. He's looking strangely at me.
And in a flash I'm on the floor and all his friends are laughing"

Yes upyourkilt,
My Mam Played one! thats exactly what we called it " a Squeese box"
happy Days!Old Doll.
That's the sweetest name for a concertina I've ever heard! In SA some people call it a "x-mas wurm" ( worm) or a "donkie-long" (donkey-lung) because if you play it really badly(like me) it sounds like a donkey braying!
But I like your name much more!

I CAN read music, I CAN transpose, I CAN tell you who wrote what and how they wrote it but I CAN'T write a decent song, I CAN'T move people to tears (the good kind!)with my playing, I CAN'T just pick up any old song and play it immediately without sucking, I CAN'T read or even play tabs all that well..notice how the CAN'T list is longer than the CAN list welcometomyhead?
How many pieces of paper you have saying you know all the theory doesn't make a great musician...PASSION for the music does!
If you have to rely on a score sheet to make music for you then perhaps you need a new hobby.

Re: call me dumb...but... (8 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Hey Roger,
Thanx for the copy of the song. Actually it's exactly what i wanted. I wanted to see how different your version turned out from my own! Like I said, give me a song and I can transpose it for you in no time(it's not as difficult as most people think!) but finding lyrics to put to the music, there lies the rub. What I meant to convey was that book learning or lack thereof doesn't make what kind of musician you are. Knowing the theory certainly helps but it doesn't automatically make you a better musician. I think passion for the music does. Even someone like me who's been studying music her whole life battles with something that someone else finds easy...and that's why I like the songwriting forum so much because when ,like me, you have the music but not the words...well you can figure it out. Thanx again for the copy!

Re: oud (4 replies, posted in Other string instruments)
you can spell it either way, 'ud or oud. i learned about the ud from an egyptian musician and that's the way he always spelt it. but it makes no diffs! the ribs are the ridges you see on the body of the 'ud. there are always an odd number because they are built around one central rib and then outwards. i ask because depending on the number of ribs, you can tell after which style it was made. the century, place of origin all that. ...unless u have an origional ancient...in which case please adopt me!

Re: oud (4 replies, posted in Other string instruments)
the 'ud was origionally a chinese instrument and means flexable rod or twig. historians are divided about whether the 'ud was origionally made in china or was it made in the 3rd century during the reign of Sasania king Shapur the first in north africa and then spread to the east. the most common tuning for it is G-A-d-g-d1 or c1 or A-B-e-a-d1-g1. u can have 2,4,6 or 7 strings. i would try lute strings, because it is essentially a short necked lute. the 'ud is very widely spread throughout the arabic world but is used nowadays for traditional egyptian music. if u can imagine it the strings were once made of silk. how many ribs does yours have and how long is it. either way it;s an amazing instrument.

I also love the classical stuff and am not fond of metal. Although I do like "enter the sandman" by Metallica. What genre would Live be? I always thought they were hard rock. I don't like country, except for Johnny Cash.
