I didn't realize that Texas ever had a flood.

But saying that I also realize that my knowledge of Texas is limited to the movie 'Paris,Texas', Dallas the soap opera, and the music of Lyle Lovett.

Shows how much I know ...

Some songs to cheer up all of us that have to suffer the UK's weather.

Travis                      - Why does it always rain on me?
The Undertones        - Here Comes the Summer (when, Mr Weatherman?)
Led Zeppelin            - When the Levee Breaks (for all those poor souls in Worcestershire)
Bob Dylan                - A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall
Rolling Stones          - Jumping Jack Flash (I was born in a cross-fire hurricane, and I howled at my ma in the driving rain)

Any more ?

I'm just leaving the house to swim to the tennis court ...

Where in darnation is Cape Breton Island, Badeye?

You may be a guitar player, but you sure do have a strange address.
By the way, where would one find Coney Island (I think Lou Read mentioned it once or twice)

Hi Doc, David again.

You're right as usual, I shouldn't make a joke about my son's performance.

He played my bass, used a microphone he borrowed from me, and he's still high on the adrenaline. ( is that how you spell it?)
I couldn't see the gig because it was at his school leavers party and parents were not allowed in.

The next time that 'Toxic Life' perform I'll try to borrow a video camera and capture the event.

still keeping the faith

Hi again,

The lad's just got back, apparently the band's called 'Toxic Life'

They murdered   Paradise City (Guns 'n' Roses)
Smoke on the Water (Oh my God)
It's Time to Rock 'n' Roll (Toxic Life)

They got an encore and girls were fainting (but it may have been the heat).

Have you got the balls ...

cheers

Hi all,

My son's just left the house on the way to his first gig, playing bass and singing.
He's 11 years old and I'm pretty sure that it's going to sound like something they use to torture suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay.

I played my first gig aged 19 and nearly ended up with brown pants.

When did you first "hit the boards" and what was it like.

all the best

David

OK, I wasn't going to get drawn in but ....

I agree with most of Michel's list. I'm glad you mentioned Elton, much under-rated these days, forget the hype listen to the music.

I've only recently accepted that Metallica are worth listening to, I think it was krishanu that did that for me.
Classical I would agree with Bach and add Mozart.
Johnny Cash is in his own league, but try Dwight Yoakam for country. (" I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die", nice one Johnny)
Folk, Nanci Griffith, I've seen her live four times, never disappointed.
The Clash are undefinable, they did just about every style you could shake a stick at. (and did them all well)
The Ramones, it couldn't get any better.

And if like (or not) Girl Bands, give the Sugababes a go, you never know you might just like it. (Sorry I really do have eclectic tastes)

cheers

David

Hi,

I knew about Django's fingers but did not realize he was from Belgium.

That guy really could play and fast too.

I didn't want to Google for information, that's too easy. It's more interesting to see what people on the forum say.

cheers

ParanormalGuitar claims to be a youngster, yet he can't tell me how to become Ken's friend on Bebo.

If it helps, I'm on there as acmecorp.

Can some brainbox help me here?

I think I'll have to start a new thread ...

I never did, but when I was working as a carpenter on a house renovation, the owner of the house and myself stopped for a cup of tea.
We were sitiing in the kitchen, (the house had been gutted and was therefore full of echoes), we both heard footsteps coming from the living room.
I shouted "Hi, we're in the kitchen", and the owner went to see who was there.

No one.

I have no explanation.

The truth is out there Scully!

Hi Will, I'll show my son when he gets in from school, he'll probably think I faked it.

Now being a 'young person', you can probably help with my Bebo problem.
How in God's name do I get to be Ken's friend on Bebo?

(I'm on there as acmecorp unsurprisingly)

There's a rather technical but quite detailed explanation here.

http://www.afn.org/~afn54096/mus-theor/footnote.html

There's an explanation of musical modes here.

http://www.banjolin.supanet.com/mode_summary.htm

I hope this helps

I think you're talking modal music here.

This is going to be very simplistic

The difference between modal music and diatonic music is that in diatonic music the solo notes follow the chords, but conversely in modal music the notes of the scale that you choose, be it lydian, phyrgian et cetera determine the harmonies that you are trying to achieve. Simply put  you invent the harmonies from the way you play the scale.

I was going to explain some more but it's too late and I'm knackered. I'll try again tomorrow.

sorry for now

I forgot Puff the Magic Dragon, I used to do that one for my daughter when she didn't spend her time insulting me and begging for money.

Here's another puke turning revelation, I once got my daughter to provide the vocals for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, while I was testing a mixing desk and a bunch of recording and sequencing software.

Suffice to say she rapidly got pissed off with the results.

Ah kids, don't you love 'em

Well, actually, I agree with Ken, I only started this topic for a bit of a laugh, (but the story about my son is true).

You should go and knock them dead with anything you know.
My favorite is to piss them off with stuff like the Spice Girls until they actually here you singing along and wonder what drugs you're on.

Then quickly start a Rolling Stones song, before they quite get it!

Hint : most of the Stones early stuff takes only three chords.

I must admit, Rhinestone Cowboy is one of my favorite songs and I won't keep it hidden anymore.

There'll be a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me.

Couldn't have said it better

Interesting fact (NOT!)

You can play that melody using only the black keys on the piano.

(how do you do a yawning smiley)

Years ago, (oh my god he's going to bore me to death with his war experiences),
I played bass in a band when I was at university.

We used to get a free rehearsal room with a glass wall front right next to the campus auditorium.
Well, looking up from a particularly difficult bass part one day, I was horrified to see the Ramones (with high maintenance girlfriends) staring at us through the glass wall. (they were playing a gig there that day). At that point I thought, am I ever going to be as cool as that (but I didn't stop playing).

Moral of story.

The Ramones made nine albums and saw great chicks, but I'm still alive and playing. (sorry only three of them are dead, Hi Tommy)

Join any old band, play whatever you like, you are as cool as you want to be.

keep on rockin' ( I know that sounds twee, but it's from the heart)

No, that's cool, I learned that song years ago from a school music book.

Turned out that the book was wrong, my girlfriend at university showed me how it ended on a major not a minor, something called a Picardy third if I remember rightly, where a minor key song ends on a major.

I hope Welcome2myHead is listening, he might learn something smile

all the best

David
