Seeing things like this makes me question my attempt at playing guitar. This kid is like 3 years old I'm guessing. He's got total control of his fingers already and even stops a couple times in the middle to scratch his nose and gets right back into it. If this kid sticks with it he will be awesome in no time. Wish I would have started that young. WOW.

Not a dumb question, just not a cut and dry answer.

I think it is all relative to each person and their situation. If you feel comfortable enough to play in front of others and are not shy of your skill. When asked, I say I play guitar (I know Zurf, play songs ....). But I don't consider my self a guitar player. I think for me, a guitar player is one that can perform in front of an audience. This I am not yet comfortable with.

For most of us I would say, it depends on if there is a chance of the question "do you play" leading to actually playing. If there is no chance of that then we say yes I do play. If there could be a chance of getting a guitar shoved into our hands we might use the go to answer, "Well, sort of."  If you're with a group of guitar players at  a club you are probly less apt to play than if you were with a group of golfers at the clubhouse.

I don't think there is a certain milestone that you hit to become a guitar player. There are people who call themselves guitar players that really should be digging ditches instead of playing, but that doesn't stop them.

So Nomikal, when will you consider yourself to be good? I too am an amateur that is not very good. My friends say I'm good cuz I am can play more than they can. But I don't see myself as good. It's all relative to the company you keep I guess.

That's my take on it anyway.

As far as I know you are correct Detman. If you're capoed 2nd to get E, then open would be D.
I don't know anything about what key a song is in but according to this chart you are right.

Have a look here:

http://logue.net/xp/capochart.htm

Same as the chart above.

I guess I failed to mention that I'm looking for strum patterns for those songs. I have the chord sheets for them already.

Very cool Rich!!!

I have Small Town ready to learn. I just have to add it to my practice sessions. A few on my list are Our Country, Without Expression, Teardrops Will Fall, Walk Tall, & Troubled Land.

Any of those in your playbook?

Can't seem to find that one Rich. Welcome to chordie btw. I love Mellencamp. Can u play any of his other songs? I'd be interested in learning something from you.

If we're talking about future drummers also. This kid gets my vote!!

Makes you feel like you wasted lots of years playing in the sandbox.

I have a friend who has been playing for a few years maybe. He can't play a song all the way thru. He knows bits and pieces to lots of songs but nothing complete. He doesn't even know how to up stroke. Anyway, I make sure that I learn a song all the way thru before I move on to the next. Actually, I work on 2 or 3 songs at once, but I learn those before moving on. I feel that when someone asks you if you play guitar and you say yes, then you better have an actual repertorie of songs to pull from. I know Zurf, playing songs is not playing guitar. I'm using playing in a general sense. So when I open my 3-ring binder I can play everything in it. As I get better, I often go back and add stuff that I couldn't play before to the songs I know.

I think it's better to learn songs all the way thru. If not to make you a better player then just to say yes I can play that.

He supposedly invented the "Devil Horns" we have come to love so much.

His music will live on forever. A true heavyweight in the hard rock world.

Zurf is right. It's all about the girls no matter who sings, writes, or plays it.

Nice job Pix!!!

Quick question, how do get the varnish to blend? Do you spray it? I work with wood on occasion and when re-varnishing I usually do the surrounding area also. Or to whatever edges so I don't have to worry about the varnish looking diff.

I agree with Papa. Who says you have to have a relaxed grip. If your grip works for you then do it. Obviously you can't play if you have rigamortis, but if that's the case you wouldn't be playing guitar. You've been playing long enough to know how to do it and what it should feel like. Don't let others tell you how it should be. Everyone is different.

WOW!! And that's just for Mother's day.
So let's see how this pans out for you. Anniversary is a new pickup, for your birthday an amp, maybe a new car for Christmas!?!?!??!?

I wish you many years of happy strumming on your new Epi.

Welcome to Chordie Billy!!!

Chordie is basically a search engine. It finds what you search for on other sites and formats it the way you see it.  As far as I know you would have to post it on another tab site so Chordie can pick it up.

Someone more knowledgeable will chime in with more info.

Hi Robyn and welcome to Chordie!!!

I had a look at yourwebsite. There's gonna be a lot of info available once you get it done. Very cool, info is invaluable.

My favorite teacher is yourguitarsage on youtube. He has a website (yourguitarsage.com) but there's not any lessons there. There is just a link to his youtube stuff, and info about buying his e-book.

My other 2 biggies are justinguitar.com and guiternoise.com, but you already have those.

Good luck on the project. I'll be checking in on it.

Glad to hear that the picks are still making their trek. I put the tread tape in there. Hope it comes in handy for you. I use it on my picks to keep them from slipping out of my hand. I put the thick rubber wedgies in there too. Don't know if that's what you took, but cool!!! Someone else's junk is another mans treasure.

Keep the picks moving!!!!!!!

Welcome Son!!!!!

I have seen a couple of your mom's vids and she sings very well. So if they were watching your sister then she must be an amazing gymnast.

Watch out for the sand in those guitars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you should set a can down and see if you get any tips.

I don't mean to hi jack this thread, but I disagree with Zurf's #2.

A newbie hears a song and says I want to play THAT. As a newbie, there is no inkling to add a personal touch. A newb wouldn't even know how to do that. I find that after 1 1/2 years of playing, I can just now go back to songs I already know and add things. But the things I add are still from other's I see playing those songs. Adding my own stuff to change it up is something I cannot do. I don't have the musical aptitude.

What it's supposed to sound like is the way we have heard these songs for years and years. It's kind of a double edged sword. We don't want t change it because that's why we like it and we don't have the knowledge to do so. I don't know of any newbs that pick up the guitar with the intent to interpret songs they like. We strive to play what we hear. When we get it that's what makes us feel like we can take on the task with this guitar thingy. Getting it makes us want to progress.

So as far as what it's "supposed to sound" like, that is a newbie's compass.

I'm not bashing Zurf. I'm sure he forgets more stuff than I've learned. This is just what I have experienced and what works for me.

I am on the verge of being a mutant. I can hit the F more times that not right now. I have seen it progress thru lots of practice. I can only switch to it from Am and C. But that's two changes closer to mastering it. It is difficult to learn but it has to be done. Just think, you look at barre chord players with awe. Someday others will see you in the same light. Such a simple thing, the barre chord, but what a world of diff it makes.

Keep at it and you will nail it down.

Welcome to Chordie Natsumi!!!!

You have found an awesome forum with lots of knowledgeable people.

Here are a few suggestions:

Justinguitar.com

On youtube search yourguitarsage.

These guys are very helpful for me. I've only been playing about 1 1/2 years.

Oh 1 more. Do a search for "mike herberts 10 strum google video". It's a good video.

When combining the strumming with chords, your chords need to be second nature. You can't think about 2 diff things at once. With your chords being instictive you can concentrate on your strumming. Start slow and it will come to you.

So I guess we're not getting our "newbie resource" sticky.?.?.?

I loved seeing you nab spammers when they try to infiltrate Chordie.

Best of luck in all your ventures.

Money and fame make people crazy. Because they are spoiled and get everything they want and don't have to work for any of it, they rely on other outlets. I agree there is way too much money being thrown around in the entertainment world. Doctors and teachers should be the highest paid people in the world if you ask me. To make millions playing a game or being on tv is ridiculous. When we have homeless people living on the street why does a football player get 20 million a year? Something wrong there I think. It is not common to find a celebrity that doesn't indulge in the wrong way.  Money can get them whatever they desire, but that must get old. So they end up doing stupid things that get them in trouble.

I have heard that most athletes have alot more testosterone than an average guy. That's why they are athletes. Because of this, it takes more to satisfy them. So you can't have a football player just turn off his aggression once the game is over. They need to find more things that give them a rush. More sex, drugs, etc. I personally think this is a crock. They are grown ups and can make decisions for themselves.

I have the tabs for it already. The way he plays it is really cool. I just dont can't work it out to sound like he does.
