Congrats to you Bim. You bit the bullet and did something that most will never do. I think that feeling of satisfaction will be haunting you until you do it again. I would think it will get easier as everyone says due to the fact that now you know what to expect. My hats off to ya!!!

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!  80's music stinks out loud?????? I have to whole heartedly disagree. There has not been a music revolution of that magnitude since Elvis and the Beatles. Whether is was hair bands, new wave, or rap, the 80's changed music forever. I grew up on 80's music so I am a little biased. Up until then it was going downhill. I mean the 70's was very music challenged. Since then we're spiraling down again. since the 90's I've had a very hard time finding new popular music I like. It's time for another music revolution.

Taylor, like Zurf and MKM said, it's normal. Your tastes will change with age. As you get older you will learn to appreciate music instead of just enjoying it. You'll travel down lots of different roads on the musical journey. I think blues is where it's at. The soul that is put into the blues is just amazing. Funny, I still love my 80's hair bands tho. Don't worry about your tastes changing. Just sit back, hold on, and enjoy the ride. Explore the music.

Sounds kinda dangerous. With all the spewing unicorns and black holes, maybe I'll stay away. HA!!!

The thing that turns me on about it (beside the awesome music and brew to be had) is that it's not just IN the town. They lock the place down and this is all that goes on for the whole weekend there. The whole town is a part of it. I can't wait to go!!!

I've had my eye on this one for the past few years. Someday I'm gonna go. I can't imagine how awesome it will be.

This reminds me of what gets played on radio nowdays. When did The Police and Michael Jackson become Oldies? The genres got mixed up somewhere and it really bugs me. I think it went all wrong when Metallica was being played on alternative stations.

I feel your pain Zurf!!!!

I tend to switch off each day. One day I'll play lots of songs from my songbook, starting with the ones I know best and ending with the ones I have recently added. Then the next day I will practice the new songs I'm learning, or some blues scales. The next day is back to my songbook. I think I do this for a couple reasons.
1) I need to keep it fresh so I don't get stuck in a "I have to practice this stuff again" rut.
2) I hit the songbook to make me feel like I actually know what I'm doing.

I try at least once a week to play thru my entire songbook. Which at this point is only 19 songs. I try to spend 1 hour, 5 days a week practicing. Sometimes I only get 1/2 hour in or only 4 days. But I will never miss more than 3 days of playing/practicing. That is a rule I stick by no matter what.

See, maybe another assignment coming down the tubes. Stick with Ricky and learn all you can from him. You may be called to step up or step into another situation that requires his skill but not necessarily him.

Dm that is awesome. Now do you see what all your time and effort practicing has led to? All these years you've had an itch, which built into a passion for the guitar. God knew it and now has called you to serve him with your talent. But just because you think you've made it, don't close your ears. He may have an even greater calling for you.(Music leader maybe??) We must remember that He will open doors when He is ready. Not just when we want it to happen. So, congrats on the new endeavor and remember where it all came from.

If I didn't have to answer to the wife I would have opted for another hardshell case. Gig bags are less expensive tho.

Wayne, very cool bag. It's has the inners of a hardshell. I like it!!!!! I was looking at gators too, but as you said, they're a bit more expensive.

Amy, funny thing is, I don't take the bag anywhere. It is to hold my Ibanez dread that I only play occasionally. That's why I got a bag instead of another hardshell. I couldn't see spending $100 for a case that sits around most the time.  If I'm going somewhere I take one of my hardshells.

Dead, yes the large pocket will hold a 3/4" binder very nicely. The other 2 pockets are really just slits with zippers. The smallest is filled up with a tuner, capo, and picks. The middle slit will fit sheets of paper only, no binder. I'm not sure what else you would put in it. Boxes of strings would fit nicely too. Anything flat would fit the middle one just fine.

Hope that helps!!

Hi all!!! This is just an FYI.

Just received a new gig bag and I must say this thing is very cool. Musician's Gear Elite acoustic gig bag. Comes in diff colors, I got the tweed one. Thick padding on the inside. 3 front pockets. Fits my Ibanez dread. For under $30 shipped (thru Amazon) this thing is a steal.

Others will chime in if i get this wrong!!!!

Hold down the 6th string at the 1st and 12th fret. Look at the string at the 6th fret. You should have about .005 (5 thousandths of an inch). A piece of 24# or 28# printer paper should fit in between the fret and string. That's what my set up guys tells me.

That's the first song I learned to play toots.  Very simple slow tempo song. Check that one out for sure Tony. And it's a classic so you can't go wrong. There are lots of video lessons on it too.

Grandpa Elliot was awesome!!!!

Glad to hear of your progress Tony. Makes you feel good huh? I agree with Tak. Look for songs that include a fourth chord along with your G C D. It should be very easy for you to add one new chord in with the 3 you already know. Em G C D are in lots of songs. Sounds like you're at the point where you can move on.

Congrats on the F chord Steph. That one is the easiest I think, so it gets harder from here.

Action refers to the distance between the strings and frets. High action means there is alot of space between the two and you need to push the strings farther to contact the frets. High action makes a guitar more difficult to play. So low action is just the opposite. The strings are closer to the frets. Less distance to push the strings, less hard on your fingers, and faster chord changes. If you take your guitar to a good luthier he will be able to set it up for you.

Bike nailed it. Action has alot to do with it. Just had my newest addition worked on. Action was lowered significantly and barres are much easier.  So now when I practice practice practice the barre chords I can get some to sound like they're supposed too.

You are right. We should be encouraging. Hollie, whatever you need to get you playing is what you should do. If it's your thing, then by all means go for it. In the end we are all trying to better ourselves on this funny shaped box with strings.

But......
I don't think we're knocking her really. We just don't understand. I myself think JB has no talent. Just in the right place at the right time.

I too ask the question WHY? But to each their own. Maybe she's young and that's what she's into.

Roger has it right. I just had my guitar worked on last week. First he loosened the truss rod bcuz the neck had a little too much bow to it. The he filed the nut a little bit and then shaved off some of the bridge. Truss rod is not for lowering action.

Thanks for all the great info Pix!!!

Looking at the inside of the top, the grain looks the same as the inside of back. Kinda wide spread grain. Hard to tell with all the bracing in there. I don't know what it is. I've seen other A&L labels that give % of each wood used. Ex. Wild Cherry 50%, Maple 33%, Walnut 13%, Spruce 4%. Mine is not like this tho. Wish I could find out for sure what mine is made of.

I e-mailed A&L, so maybe they can give me a bit more info.

Any other thoughts Pix?

The label says Wild Cherry, Maple, Spruce, Rosewood. So, I guess it's a spruce top. How do i know if its a laminated model or not?

Hi all!!!!

Ok, so I picked up a used A&L guitar for a really good price (under $80). Since I have heard all good things about the Godin company I figured I can't go wrong. I need to put lighter strings on it, and take it in for a setup too, but it plays fine. It looks REALLY cheap tho. Black satin finish, painted on rosette, very little edge binding. It's just not pretty like a normal guitar. I e-mailed Guitarpix to see if he could give some more info on it. I don't really even know what it's make of exactly. According to the website it's Wild cherry back and sides with a solid cedar top. It was made in 2003 according to the serial number. It doesn't look like the new ones do.

Any additional info is appreciated.

Welcome to Chordie Ananthu.

I have been told to listen to the drums to get the basic beat. I myself cannot pick out a strum pattern like that. Another bit of advice I've heard is to listen to the song over and over and over so you can feel it out.

Other will come by with better advice.

You're in India huh? I don't think our picks around the world have been there yet. Check this out:
