There seem to be a few of us older folk picking up the guitar again. I also found it hard to get back into barring but it gradually comes good. Just practice and a wee bit of tecknique. I kinda slant my hand towards the nut and lean my fingers on the barring finger. It kinda gives you a wee bit more strength(i think).
I also have small hands(no jokes about small handed guys please) so find some things a bit of a pain in the ass but there are usually ways round these things.
Keep at it, and if you're having half as much fun as me then you'll be having a great time.
And the Folliollidoodleolltheday scale if you fancy just messing about <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">

Hey, right on Brother. But have you heard me sing!!?? <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_eek.gif" border=0 alt="Shocked">
I'd also just like to add in S Club 7 in here just to annoy Ken. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">
Makes you wonder why someone with such knowledge and experience is on Chordie in the first place.
However, long may it continue. Guys like me(i.e. too miserable to pay for lessons) need guys like that popping in every now and then. Every little bit helps.
If you ever change to an electric guitar you will find barre chords so much easier than on an acoustic. Or maybe that's just MY acoustic!!
Jeezoh,Ken
No Alarm????

You say that your thumb creeps up above the top of the neck while holding barre chords. I did a wee experiment and holding the guitar in this way is extremely stressful on my thumb. Try placing the fleshy fingerprinted part of your thumb(sorry if this sounds a bit silly but it's the only way I can think of to describe it) slap bang in the centre of the neck. I find it easier to hold barre chords this way and it is way less stressful on the thumb.
I'm also finding it hard not to picture you with a large red throbbing cartoon thumb!!!!!! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_eek.gif" border=0 alt="Shocked">
Al
I didn't know Hitler played the guitar
I find that well known folk songs are really good for getting started. Lots of G's, C's, F's and Em's. Things like Wild Rover or Whiskey in the Jar. Good singalongs too.

"King of rock and roll" I THINK NOT - he was just an average but OVERLY noisy blues guitarist in fancy dress - OLD CHUCK BERRY WAS THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL GUITARISTS - basic? yes ! but rock and roll most definately - and he sang well and wrote GREAT songs - something Jimi never could do!!!!

All my illusions have been shattered. I shall never play the guitar again. The man who inspired millions to play was a dud. What would rock and roll be without a bit of smoke, mirrors and fancy dress?
I'm with the Strummer on this. Teenage Kicks is a fantastic song to belt out.
In my opinion Hendrix was THE king of rock n roll, but hey what do I know?
Another song for practicing those barre chords is the old cliche that most guitar stores banned from being played. Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Very simple but gets your hand moving that chord shape about a bit.
OK, so I'm old!!!
Is that the guitarists Holy Trinity then? <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">
Does new wave mean you have now entered the 20th century??
Don't really know what you mean by stumped. Do you mean that you feel you have reached a point where you are fed up playimg the same songs over and over; or do you feel like you have reached your peak but would like to go a bit farther?
Don't know if you've done this but how about looking into music theory of the guitar in a bit more detail. I've tried it and still find it a bit daunting; but then I'm still happy bashing out the few songs I know at the moment. And still finding new ones to challenge me, which doesn't take much. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_confused.gif" border=0 alt="Confused">

First time i ever heard of anyone doing that. Although I remember seeing someone break a string on his bass guitar a long time ago.
Ouch!! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_eek.gif" border=0 alt="Shocked">
Sounds like I got a bargain. Mine only cost £10. All singing all dancing, lights n everything. I'll need to remember to keep it out of reach of inquisitive family members.
I have been getting really annoyed recently. This has been because I seem to have become very fussy when tuning my guitar. Sometimes taking 15-20 mins just to get it spot on. This has caused a knock on effect to my playing because as I have become more neurotic about the tuning I have started to think that my playing is getting worse. Started to blame the guitar and everything.
Then I bought a digital tuner and can't believe the difference it has made. It's not like I was way out with tuning by ear but I was getting to the stage where if it was out by a fraction I was starting to pick it up and it was really putting me off.
I can't make my mind up if I am becoming more tuned in to the sound of the notes or if I am tone deaf.
Maybe I could pick up some decent ears on eBay.
Just realised I know even less than I thought I did. What is p,i and ma?
I recently ventured into a music store for the first time in many many years(I've just got back into playing after many years). Is it just me or are these places very intimidating. I would love to have had a wee go on one or two of the many excellent guitars on show but found I was too embarrassed to show how inept a player I am.
Ended up buying a plectrum and leaving; feeling totally depressed. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">
I'll sound like a geek for saying it but you should check out your local library, they always have lots of beginner stuff.
The fret2fret thing offers a method of remembering where everything is on the fretboard. Good if you need that sort of thing but that's all it does; it doesn't actually teach you much more than memory technique.
Only my opinion but it seems to be aimed at people who are ready to go that wee step farther. Not me yet!

Next time you're in Scotland I'll buy you a whisky or two.
