Reverse stringing any guitar is possible, with a few structural changes. The nut would have to be reversed, since the thicker >>> thinner strings will be going in the opposite direction. The angle of the saddle will also need to be reversed, so that the intonation will stay true. Not as major as it sounds, but should be done by a luthier who has the tools and know-how to do a proper job.

Re: Which guitar would you recommend for a beginner? (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
With the Ibanez models you've posted, I'd personally be inclined to go with the RG ... better electronics than the GIO's. Ibanez are known for for their very playable necks, which are narrow and fast. That's a problem for someone with large thick hands (like me) as the strings are just a bit too close together.
I'll echo what CG said ... Yamaha's are excellent value, especially for an acoustic. Epiphone also make a lot of decent quality guitars at affordable prices in both acoustic and electric ... worth a look.
And I also agree with Russell, that a player eventually should get the best guitar they can afford. However, if someone is just starting, and perhaps not sure if they'll stay with it, spending a lot of $$$ on a guitar probably doesn't make sense. Your ongoing interest and skill level will tell you when it's time to upgrade.

Re: Frets wearing out (27 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Typically, a player who does more string bending will wear frets out faster than simple on-off pressing will. The action of rubbing the strings sideways across the frets will wear the crowns of the frets down. This wear is easily visible to the eye, with a flat polished surface on the worn frets being visible.
On a nylon string classical, the effect is reversed, where the frets will wear indents into the nylon of the top 3 strings. The strings will develop a slight wavering sound when this happens, as they're no longer shaped consistently along the length of the string.
The standard nickel-silver frets are fairly soft, and there are even varying grades within those. Less expensive guitars will usually have poorer quality components. It might be a good move to talk to a luthier about having your guitar re-fretted with pure Stainless Steel frets. They're much harder, and will last a lot longer.
Here's a good article on fret wire. It's mainly about banjos, but the same principles apply:

Glad you enjoyed it, CG!
Somehow, the heavier metal format "works" for this piece of music ... so dark. Unfortunately, the electronic pipe organ doesn't sound anywhere near as good as a real pipe organ. There's something about some rumbling 32-foot pipes producing sub-sonic frequencies that digital gear can't replicate. I'd love to hear this played on the massive organ in the Sydney Town Hall in Australia.

Re: electric guitar for an experienced acoustic (12 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Lots of great advice from some very knowledgeable Chordians!
I've personally found that Epiphone's are exceptional quality for the money. Sound-wise, you'll need to pay attention to the difference between single-coil and humbucker pickups. The biggest adjustment you'll face when playing an electric is dealing with the extra sustain they have. You may need to learn a few string muting techniques that aren't as needful on an acoustic.
It's a lot of fun to explore new avenues in music and instruments ... enjoy the journey!

Sorry ... can't be of help, BGD.
You have lots of expertise about guitars, so if it's made of good woods, properly constructed, and fits / sounds good, you'll have a winner.

Tarja Turunen "The Phantom of the Opera" Argentina, 2012

Tarja is the former lead singer of the metal band "Nightwish", and obviously a classically trained soprano. Paired here with Argentina's own Diego Valdez, they do a very good cover of the classic number from the famous opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I'm not a metal head, but this is pretty doggone good.

I've asked for a Celestion 12" Neo Creamback (4.2 lbs) speaker, to swap out the Celestion Vintage 30 (12.1 lbs) in my Traynor amp. This Neo Creamback has almost identical tone to the Vintage 30, and at 8 lbs lighter will make the amp a lot more portable.

This probably should be in the "Poems" thread, but it belongs here:
FUNERAL for a BREAD MACHINE
Dearly beloved, family and friends.
We gather to mourn the end of all ends,
An icon is gone,
A legend of song,
The triple-J bread machine, amen and amen.
More than a backdrop, more than a stand,
The bread machine graced us all in Chordie land,
Its fame monumental,
Its claim intercontinental,
The triple-J bread machine, amen and amen.
NGDs come and go as they may,
With bargains and deals almost day after day,
A show piece repeated,
Yet never defeated,
The triple-J bread machine, amen and amen.
But life goes on, and guitars will be bought,
Just because they can, whether needed or not,
The pics may be shown,
But the loss will be known,
The triple-J bread machine, amen and amen.

Re: Using Carnauba (Car) Wax To Polish....... (28 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Waxes in general can leave a bit of a film, but probably not enough to cause a deadening effect on tone. On an acoustic with no finish, it would dampen the resonance in a big way. I personally prefer Armour-All. It's much lighter / thinner, and also water-based so it can't damage any type of guitar finish. It's terrific stuff to speed up a finished neck also!

Re: TUBE AMPS (18 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Nice!!!
Great choice to go with EL34's instead their "swap-able" counterparts (6L6's). EL34's break up nicer (IMHO) to get that fat & crunchy Marshall tone, whereas 6L6's tend to have a bit more sparkle and twang. Does your amp self-bias, or are the tubes pre-biased for it?
Happy NTD, Beamer!

Jethro Tull "Mother Goose / Jack-a-Lyn" Istanbul, 1991
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vLuqSxPu4c
Two for one this week, with songs from two different eras of the band. "Mother Goose" was released as single 45-RPM record from the Aqualung album (1971). It's real fun to play, but I should warn that the chord list on Chordie is to be played with the capo on the 5th fret. If you wish to play it open (without a capo) use the Chordie transposer to take it down 5 semitones, and you're all set. Jack-a-Lyn first came out on a 1988 box set album, and was later included as a bonus tune on the CD re-release of "Broadsword and the Beast". This live clip features a total change in key, tempo, and feel at the 5:00 minute mark, with guitarist Martin Barre adding some serious crunch with the Hamer he's famous for. Awesome tunes, and I hope you enjoy them.

I hear ya, CTech ... planet Earth is becoming less hospitable all the time. As someone who was diagnosed as Manic-Depressive 35 years ago (now called Bi-Polar), it's a struggle some days to not drown in all of the sadness we're having crammed into our ears. Others days, it's hard to resist angered retaliation against it all. Both reactions are futile. Our thoughts need to be constantly focused on what is true, good, precious, and important. The rest of them can go stew in their own juice!
