good post toney!!

I always thought HEAVY METAL got it's name from the studs on the belts, jackets, boot straps with studs, metal cod pieces,  etc that rockers wear.

yes but it might sound different though it will be the correct key.

And yes, if it tell you to play a capo on 2nd 5th fret etc, you will put it there and play the chords it tells you i.e A G, play those, even though they are not making the tone of an A or G etc.

hi,

When you go onto a song you can transpose the song by looking to the right hand side. There is an option to "transpose". if you go in there and click +2 it will transpose the song up two frets ( meaning it is going up two keys) If the song start in the chord A originally it will transpose ( change) it to starting in the chord B +2 makes it C etc etc

playing a guitar with no capo is playing it "Open". It depends what chords you use that determines the Key you are playing in.

if you go here, you can see things about scales, keys, chords, notes.

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_scales.php

I  found this site really useful and still use it sometimes.

if a band do not make up most of their own songs then yes, any tribute band is a cover band.

Some see " two from the jam" as a cover band but as the name says two of them were in the jam anyway, so they are not a cover band, and also they are making a new album.

there are too many cover/tribute bands.
They use the name tribute so it does not sound as cheap and tacky and thieving as COVER band

That is not to say they are good what they do, and good luck to them but I would not go out my way to watch any, although I have seen one or two AB CD were very good but not a patch on the real group. Also I wouldnt pay entrance fee into an establishment to watch someone make money from the talents of others.

well, maybe "the australian pink floyd" or "mac Floyd" if they tickets were at a reasonable price

I love

folk
rock
heavy rock ( though not thrash rock)
country ( but not country and western)
folk music ( country folk, traditional folk, folk folk)
punk
mod( if you could call that a genre, but it is really rock done with guys in smartly dressed suits)
blues

That just about covers it all apart from the manufactured bands and dance music and I shall never mention them as a genre I like or respect or admire or appreciate

Ken

well I would say no one can disagree ( like others have replied to)
Lennon and McCartney  ( if you are allowed two , even though most were wrote by Lennon)

the two names are a household name even today.
They not only recorded so many of the songs they wrote but lots they wrote were recorded by many others and not a lot know they wrote them because the beatles never recorded them.

but also on the list

Dylan
Richards and Jagger
tyler and perry

I love the pogues, utterly utterly love them.

Dirty old town is probably one of the easiest songs ever to play. I dont think you want to hear that though lol

right, how can I explain?
hmmmm. when starting in the G chord if you strum just the E string on the G then strum down all the strings then up al lthe strings .... do this three times then strum down and up over all strings a few times.

Best thing is to listen to the song and get the rythm

I just recorded it and was going to put it on youtube for you but it doesnt show much. It just looks like my hand going up and down all the time lol

Hey thanks everyone, James if you are familiar with "Hello in There"  I have always been a bit baffled how a 25 year old kid would write a song  about real life and gettin old, I guess he must have been wise beyond his years.

It is great how writers can put themselves into someone else shoes and write about their life in a song. Like you said " hello in there" was written when he was 25, yet he sings it as if he is aged 85.
eric Bogle done the same with "and now I'm easy". he wrote that when he was younger but singing about life as a farmer in his 80's

Hello in there is a powerful song about getting old and being old and respecting your elders. Or that is the way I see it.
Love it, but then I love all his songs.

Yer gonna love the concert!!1
I have never heard of Emmylou Harris but that doesnt matter.

I went to see John Prine last year in Glasgow. I got a ticket along with another 12 or 13 folk. I liked what I had heard of John prine so I thought I would go along and see what he was like, hearing that he was fabulous the year before.
I know he is getting on a bit and had cancer treatment to his throat but He can still pull off a great gig. His speaking voice was a bit hoarse but his singing was still top notch! and as for his guitar playing, well it is probably the best I have ever heard an acoustic guitar getting played in a concert.
I have mentioned this a few times on chordie before but i dont mind mentioning again

enjoy the gig and give us a report on it.

i cover a lot of floyd, syd barrett, corries, pogues, stiff little fingers, the corries, john prine, eric bogle.

totally agree with tony there.
stars only get media attention because of who they are, there are a lot people worse off and on a lot more substances than a lot of stars.
And apart from that, the stars probably like the attention as being hell raisers, it gets them a bigger profile then silly wee kids think its cool and say they like them.
must be some sort of rebelious thing ( I am speaking from experience)

Ken

also talking of tribute bands,
the tribute to abba called "born again" or however you spell their name. They have been going longer now than the actual band ABBA lasted.
And I think the bootleg beatles as well. I know they were going in the early 90's where the beatles never lasted ten years.

Anastasia

without treading on Jerome's reply which is bang on correct.

If you play a G chord without the capo, you are playing G

If you put a capo on the 2nd fret and hold the G chord down ( as in the same shape of chord you would do for G) it is not actually a G. As jerome says you are making the key go higher so since the capo is on the 2nd fret the actual chord you are playing is an A chord.

if playing the shape of a G chord with the capo on

1st fret         actually is G#
2nd fret                        A
3rd                               A#
4th                               B
5th                               C
6th                               C#

etc etc

Also with other chords  A chord with capo on the 2nd is B

If you find a song you like and you do not like the chords then you can transpose them to chords that are easier to play.
If you find you cannot sing along while playing those chords then use the capo. Try different frets until you find your pitch.

hope this helps a bit

I dont know if it was due to some twit trying to spam a lot and never succeeded but I am sure the other day there were still just under 170,000 members on chordie. Now today there is over 178,000. That's another 800 odd folk in  just a few days. wow!!!

what sort of tool?

And there are a lot of songs that sound better on acoustic. It probably depends what sort of music you play and what you like your guitar to sound like.

Yer nearly getting the hang here.
Roger told you in " about chordie" section to come here and ask, but I know for sure he would have been meaning for you to open a new thread.

What you are doing is highjacking another thread.

To ask your own question open a new page

how do you do this?
easy!!

click on "new topic" in the song request section.
name it  " chords and lyrics for David gates"

this way if anyone knows david gates they will open and read and hopefully help you out.

hi and welcome,

You might have more luck in a possitive response if you post the same question in " song request" section in the chordie forum

all the replies are all true rgivens.
But also if you did put it on here to share and someone did steal it and you found out you could prove you wrote it first maybe by showing a judge the web page you put it on. It would show the date, but it might not actually prove you wrote it, they might say you stole it from them years ago, but I tihnk that would be unlikely.
Also I would be quite chuffed if someone wanted to use one of my songs, as they have done before.
I put a song on youtube " some people" I got asked on the site and through an email if a guy could you it for his band.
I gladgly let him use it. I gave him permission and I dont want anything for it, even if it made it as a big hit. I might want recognition for it though.
I write songs for fun. If I wanted to do it for money I would be trying a lot harder to push my songs out. But for just now I just like sharing my songs here and on youtube and myspace.

OK, I guess it could be a "user" malfunction.  But, here's the deal:

If possible, I don't want to delete it and re-add it, because that would lose all the changes I made to the song.

but if it changes back to the 5 semitones down then are you not losing your changes? or did you change more?

This can be annoying. I have changed semitones and saved it into my book too then decided I wanted it 3 semitones different but the only way I could do it was to delete it, go to the song, change the semitones then re-add it.

I hear what yer saying. It would be good to have the option to save a song into a songbook and change it later and save it while it is still in the songbook, mostly for the reason you say.

maybe Per can make an adjustment to the program that will allow us to do this?
