Hi Tj and welcome!!!!!

Strum patterns are a hard thing for some of us to grasp. Lots of people advise to feel it out. But some of us just don't have that ability. I always check youtube as Benson suggested. If I watch and hear I can sometimes pick it out.

Good luck!!!

So that kid is like 9 or 10 I'm thinking.  I would say he's gonna peak too early. It's better to learn later so you appreciate it more. Too young and you burn out. This is what I tell myself so I don't put all my guitars on Craigslist or Ebay.

Kid rocks tho.

Uh, doesn't working while going camping defeat the purpose of going? You go to get away from work right?

I hate that!!!!! Do they really think that someone will bite? If it's worth that much then set a reserve. I guess they're hoping it will slip by and the buyer will get stuck with it. I would pass this up in the blink of an eye.

I posted an ad on the bulletin board at my son's school back in Jan. offering to teach kids. No calls yet. I think it would be fun to teach the guitar. Just waiting for something to happen.

Welcome to Bill and John!!!!

Maybe some wrist stretching exercises before you play. When you have the guitar tipped up, like the classical position, try to pull on the neck of the guitar instead of squeezing it. Hope that makes sense. So, holding the guitar stationary, you can pull from your elbow. I have to do that if I play a guitar with thick strings or high action.

Stole this from About.com
"Try slightly pulling the body of the guitar towards your body, using the arm of your picking hand. Also gently pull the neck towards you with your fretting hand. This makes fretting barre chords somewhat easier."

Good luck!!!

Axis of Awesome was very cool. Thanks for sharing DJ.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Grandpa Elliot is amazing. Soul just oozes from this guy.

I hope the Music for Change people know how lucky they are. It's a privilege to be able to see these amazing people and their talents.

I can't really say what it is about playing guitar.

It's fun, to be able to make music is an awesome thing. It's cool, there are millions of guitar players in the world but it's still kind of an elite club. It's stress relieving like Benson said. It's self gratifying, you feel good about your self when you accomplish what you've been working on. It's makes you smarter (music itself anyway) kids who play music are academically smarter than other kids.

I'm in construction and on a daily basis if I whack, cut, pinch, smash, or scrape my hand, the first thing I think is "can I still play".

Lots of us have asked ourselves why we didn't start playing sooner.

I agree with Pix. You need to test drive any guitars you can get your hands on. Maybe check diff manufacturers specs and see who offers what.

Awhile back I took my first guitar (Ibanez dread) to have a set up done. I bought it new in 2002 and just took it in last year. My guy told me that the frets stuck out a little. I never really paid attention to it. But he said it could just be from shrinkage. This guitar is a low budget model and I've never had any problems with it. Just something else to add to the mix.

I used to love working on my cars. My first was a '70 Camaro that in hind sight I should not have bought. My second was an '82 Camaro. Nice car but had it's problems. So now after being married for a while, we drive economical bulletproof vehicles. My work truck is a '92 Toyota and my wife drives a '99 Accord. I still do all the work on my truck and most all on the car. Major things on the car I could do but I figure it will take me twice as long as it would a mechanic so I'll take it in.

Had a dream for a long time to build a street Jeep. Wanted a 69-72 CJ-5 to go fast. I used to go to some illegal street races back in high school and there was such a Jeep that I loved. Wasn't fancy but was fast. Had a Chevy 350 in it. You could hear that thing get rubber into 3rd gear. I had it all planned out on paper and in my head to throw a supercharged V-6 Toyota engine into a CJ-5. But some dreams we just have to let go of sad

I also volunteer a an after school program here locally. Part of our rec program is having the kids work with me fixing up bikes that we get donated to us. They earn points based on how much the are helping me and can put those points toward getting a bike. The kids actually picked their bikes out 2 weeks ago. Our annual bike race (Redlands Bicycle Classic) in town is in April and we enter the kids in that with the bikes they worked on. It's a blast to see!!!!

I guess Pix has GAS and JAS!!!
