This is a simple little trick, yet very effective.
[Pointer finger -1   Middle finger- 2 Ring finger-3 Pinky Figer -4]
With your chording hand place finger 1 on desired fret, atop  finger 1, place finger 2 and mash down. Two frets UP the neck mash finger 4 across D,G, and B strings.
Ba-ding-a-chow-eeee!!! You should notice a nice, clean, 5 string barre chord on your fret of choice.

Do not get too comfortable with this technique though. We need to free up that pinky finger for fills and extra, fancy little tricks in the future. Once in a while, try the 5 string barre chords with only your pointer finger mashing down the frets.

One additional little trick I picked up along he way is to gently touch the low E(thickest) string with my pointer finger as I do a 5 string barre chord( A shape). By touching, not pressing the low E it mutes the string and prevents an unwanted note. Let the low E ring out if you're playing a 5 string barre chord E.

so i hear bass is really easy to play and onyone can do it, is this true? (if u play bass let me know)

Any instrument is easy to play if one is content with a low or minimal level of musicianship.
I play guitar and bass(fretless). I loop live and usually record the guitar first, followed by bass and/or percussion. I really enjoy bass, especially the smooth variation one gets from a fretless. The fretless is a little harder to play due to the absence of visible frets. My ear has improved greatly since taking on the fretless. On a fretted bass, anywhere within the fret will most always work but on a fretless there's a "sweet spot" that is much more precise and a little harder to find. It's well worth the extra effort when those low, smooth, singing tones float in the air. I also make a conscious effort to phrase my bass playing different than my guitar playing.

I understand this: E to D, +3 semitones, G to F.  Got that!  That takes care of the transposing feature. Great.

What I don't understand is how do I know where to put the capo?

Say I put the Capo on the 3rd fret.  Now which chords do I play? If the song calls for E to D (first 2 chords, for the sake of an example), then a capo on the 3rd fret, what do I play?

Thanks, again, for any info... so far, I'm learning something new every day. And that's good!

A.

To gain 3 semitones place the capo on the 3rd fret and play the song as you did previously. Instead of the NUT being your starting point the Capo now repaces the NUT as the starting point. Example; without a capo you have 20 or so frets to work with, with athe CAPO on the 3rd fret, you have 3 fewer frets to work with.

OK?

Ask questions until you are 100 % clear..........

Using the transpose feature gives you an alternative(different) way to play a particular song. Example;
an E to D progression  up 3 semitones becomes a G to F  progression

You'll want to either Capo a higher fret OR play a higher chord progression. If you transpose up 3 semitones AND capo the 3rd fret, you'll be 6 semitones higher than the original version.  This might be too much of an increase. If you do one or the other, you'll be playing 3 semitones higher.

OK ?

Nothing wrong with washing dishes. Just make sure you protect your hands with clean, dry gloves. I did a short stint washing dishes in a psychiatric hospital and the chemicals from the soap cracked my hands all to pieces. It took a month of being away from that job before my hands healed. Actually, I was fired from that job for putting on a fake wrestling match with two frozen chickens, one on each of my hands. All of the older ladies were laughing uncontrollable at my antics and then the laughing suddenly stopped. Our boss had snuck up behind me and witnessed the "chicken-fight." She wasn't as amused as the majority of the kitchen staff. I was immediately sent home never to return again. Bach, bach..............

Right.  And lets not get hung up on the pentatonics.  The pentatonics are major or minor scales with two notes dropped out.  If you can play the scales, the pentatonics are already there.

You could look at it this way.  Answer the following question.  "Where on the neck are all the C major chords?"

There are five of them.

You are probably most familiar with these two.

Open C
3nd fret A shape

Then there are these:

5th Fret G shape

E    -8-
A    -5-
D    -5-
G    -5-
B    -7-
e    -8-

8th Fret E shape  You probably know this one, too.

E    -8-
A    -8-
D    -9-
G    -10-
B    -10-
e    -8-

And 10th fret D shape

E    -12-
A    -13-
D    -12-
G    -10-
B    -x-
e    -x-

Every one of those chords is C major.  You can see how the chords link together as you work down the neck.  Learn to play the associated scales for those shapes, and you can play scales down the neck, too.

5th fret G shape should be:
e  -8-
B  -5-
G  -5-
D  -5-
A  -7-
E  -8-

8th fret E shape should be:
e  -8-
B  -8-
G  -9-
D  -10-
A  -10-
E   -8-

10th fret D shape( or 4 srring barre chord) should be:
e  -12-
B  -13-
G  -12-
D  -10-
A  -x-
E  -x-

You have the right idea, you've just flip-flopped the strings.

This is a new song by Jimmy Buffett. I have some friends who almost worship Buffett. They also have some serious cha-ching($$) and spend lots of their disposable income going to concerts. They also are very knowledgable with the song content of their hero, J.Buffett. This, according to them, is a true story about a bar in Key West, Florida. I think it's one of JB's best written songs;

solo #1  E B A E B x2
bridge 2 same as 1st bridge
verse same as 2nd verse
solo#2 E A E A C#m B A
verse E B A EEEEE (five strums on E chord to end the tune)

Just playing along with the video I'm hearing this;

Bm A G A pretty much the whole way through minus a stop or two.

The sound quality isn't that great from the video but the afore listed chord progression is close. If Bm gives you problems Capo the 2nd fret and play;

Am G F G

Here's some additional instructional material for you ;

Tab Notation Symbols

    Here you have the guitar strings corresponding to the
    below lines:

E ||--1st string E highest pitch--------------------------------------------------|
B ||--2nd string B----------------------------------------------------------------|
G ||--3rd string G----------------------------------------------------------------|
D ||--4th string D----------------------------------------------------------------|
A ||--5th string A----------------------------------------------------------------|
E ||--6th string E lowest pitch --------------------------------------------------|

    This is an Em chord picked one note at a time.

    Numbers are written on the line corresponding to the string
    to be fretted.

    The numbers indicate fret number. (left hand)

Professional musician since 1983. I've had to work a few odd jobs during the dry spells such as; carpentry work, washing cars, installing carpet, movie theatre usher, roofing, teaching guitar, ocean lifeguarding, music store sales, and washing dishes in a psychiatric hospital. I know what it means to have to work hard.  Lately though, since 2001, 100% of my income comes from performing. I never take performing for granted no matter how good or how bad a gig goes.

What is this I'm hearing? You guys think club owners sit around an say " Man, did you see that pretty, shiny shirt that guy had on last night, or, man, that hat was the bomb! We for sure need to hire those guys again!"

Come on.....

This is music, musicians, and performing. It's not some lame, superficial, fashion show. Club and restaurant owners mostly care about the quality of the product they are paying for, not what the musicians are wearing. I refuse to play for a club so shallow that they feel the need to incorporate some kind of dress code. This is rock-n-roll man! Make a statement with what comes out of the speakers, not what cloth is covering skin.

As far as things from a 'psychological armour' standpoint goes, the psychology of the mind knowing one has done ones' best in preparing for an upcoming gig should be all one needs to feel confident and ready for the gig.

Keep in mind guys these are just my thoughts and opinions. Ultimately, comfort, both mentally and physically,  is the main issue here and defining comfort varies from person to person. I do honestly feel though that the music and quality thereof is decisive in the hiring or rehiring process. Wardrobe is immaterial.

OK well I just got off the phone with the owner of the local music store. He called and asked me to perform at a barbecue next Friday! It's a paying gig scheduled from 5pm to 9pm or untill. I'll be performing solo or possibly with one other guitarist (a friend of mine). Music is no problem but what I need to know is how long are your sets usually and whats the duration of your breaks? This is my first paying gig and ,considering who it's for and the other musicians that are going to be attending, I really want it to be as professional as possible. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!  Don't know if I'm more excited or nervous...lol I've never performed in front of more than 20 people and he's got over 50 guests attending. One good thing though... It's open barr so if I can do decent for the first hour everyone will be two sheets in and not care about the rest...lol Peace!

Congrats on the gig. The person paying you is the one you need to work out your break schedule with. Work this out before you play. Each place I play has a different  break schedule. Just make sure you are the same page with the person paying you at the end of the night. If they leave it up to you, I would recommend keeping things going(play a long first set ,90 minutes or longer if can hack it) if it's going well to begin. Gigs tend to be a bit easier if your last sets' are shorter than your earlier sets. Also, the owners are gonna be happier if you get those extra people to stick around and buy a few extra drinks. Keep some background music going during your breaks either from your CD player or the bars house stereo. Limit your breaks to no more than 25 minutes. Best of luck to you. Be sure and write about it in "Let's Hear About Your Gigs".

Yeah, he's even funnier and way more obnoxious now that he's on satelite radio. (Howard 101)  They keep me in a state of belly achin' laughter. Bubba and the boys are actually doing 2 shows; One on 102.5 FM morning radio( Tampa and Jacksonville 6-10am, mon-fri) and the Sirius evening drive(3-7pm mon-thur., 10-2pm on friday)

BUBBA ARMY in the Hizzy!!!

Yeah, Stern's gotten soft and spoiled by his money. He used to be real and funny but now-a-days he's a high society snob with a piss poor work ethic. My old radio friend of so many years has abandoned his loyal fans. (boo-hoo) No need to fret though, as you said, Bubba is better!

I had a similar experience with 'Tempted' by Squeeze. It's one of those songs that sounds easy enough when listening to it but when I began to disect the tune I realized I was in for a challenge. 28 chords  and countless mistakes later I finally got it. There is a simpler way to 'get by' but I felt it my moral duty to play the song proper and give it it's due respect. I have a few people that request it everytime they see me playing out. I have a great sense of accomplishment whenever(rarely) I play it live without mistakes.
