THUNDERBIRD, BABY! Be the coolest cat to slap a plank and get you a Thunderbird.
Up the neck and tonal range? Come on! It's a bass. It's supposed to be low notes. You don't need anything above 14. If you do, use a guitar.
Hahaha ... you gave me a good grin, Zurf! The T'Bird did sound awesome, but I couldn't get a decent mellow jazz tone from it. As you said, it's built for rock ... whereas I'm more built for snacking in a La-Z-Boy chair.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys ... and your input is worth a LOT to me ... much obliged !
BGD ... you raise a great point about the fret board length; I hadn't even considered that (whew!). Both the ESP and Ibanez have 2 full octaves, while the Epiphone is well short of that ... eliminated.
The ESP has more tonal variance than the Ibanez (better EQ) and also more sustain (neck thru VS bolt on), so that's where I've been leaning. But the Ibanez has those amazing Bartolini pickups, which sound great ... tough decision.
I've been testing them through a Traynor 200-watt tube head / cab combo, which will be a part of the deal when the time comes. My little Fender Rumble 150 is a solid state combo, and totally lacks sparkle and depth. It will be sold, along with my Cort bass ... good starter outfit. I'm a huge Traynor fan, and love the "industrial" look and build of their gear:

Peatle ... anyone that can recite "The Raven" from memory has my profound respect ... wow!!!
One night in the mid-70's, a few of us were on some halucinogens (a regrettable part of my distant past) and my friend Alan read "The Raven" to us. Alan could read in dramatic fashion, and captured every dark nuance with his tone of voice. The room was lit with a few candles, and Tangerine Dream's "Sphinx Lightning" was playing in the background ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bGj_xzL_6Q ).
This isn't a trip that Mom would ever take us on, and (thankfully) doesn't know about.

I've been playing, listening, and trying out several bass guitars, and have narrowed my field to three different ones. They all feel and sound great, and are in the same general price range, so I'm looking to you - my fellow Chordians - for any experience or advice you might have with any of these three, or ... what you would choose and why:
1) ESP B-4E https://www.espguitars.com/products/986 … 8-b-series
2) Ibanez SR500 http://www.ibanez.com/products/eb_detai … color=CL01
3) Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Bass/T … ro-IV.aspx

Of the many, many things I'm grateful to my Mom for (now 79 yrs old) is for her instilling in me a love of books.
When we were young (I'm the oldest of 3) we would sit on the living room floor while Mom read to us every evening after supper. There was Robinson Crusoe, Hardy Boys, Treasure Island, Charles Dickens, and many other classics. By the time I was 10, she would say, "Rick, why don't you read for us tonight?" Sitting on the floor with my brother and sister, he encouraged me to read aloud with passion and inflection, and to use the words to paint images in our minds. To this day, Mom and I are still avid readers, and I'm thankful for her intelligence and care to impart this wonderful gift to me.

Gentle Giant "Knots" Brussels, 1974
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI8dBOIuG9I
With an intricate vocal arrangement, and a stellar acoustic guitar duet (2:20 - 5:40) from Gary Green & Ray Shulman, "Knots" encompasses all of the harmonic complexity and virtuoso musicianship which GG are known and loved for. "Knots" is from the group's 4th studio album "Octopus", featuring artwork by Roger Dean, and showing a very sinister looking Cephalopod climbing out of the sea with obvious intent to do harm.

It's fitting that Ewan is wearing a martial arts outfit, because that pinky of his could take out Chuck Norris on his best day. This is 9-minutes of some of the best fret work I know of ... intimidating yet very enjoyable.

Beautiful woodwork on that guitar, Neo ... congratulations!
Neck thru construction usually gives a lot more sustain. Some cheaper brands don't have a truss rod in the neck ... I would imagine your's does, but I can't tell from the photo. With all of that tension on the neck, it would certainly be handy if you changed string gauges and it needed a setup.

Welcome to Chordie, MAXOR ... glad you poked your head in to say hello. As others have already said, the learning just keeps on, no matter how long you play. That keeps music from ever getting dull, and each new thing you master makes you feel like you've conquered another mountain. Enjoy the climb, mate!

I agree, I lost faith in the whole music industry a long time ago - I think it was around the mid 90's the power, corruption and lies became the most apparent for me, although it was probably around before that, I just wasn't aware ...
Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson tells about his agent asking them to write a radio hit. They released "Living in the Past" in 1969, which came along on the album of the same name in 1972. The song is written in the jazzy 5/4 time signature, much like a Roland Kirk or Moe Kaufman tune. It went pretty well, but most people were just confused.

Lots of playing time = frequent string changing ... but that's a good thing, right? I certainly agree with Neo about Elixir coated strings, although I prefer their NanoWeb 80/20s on my acoustics (just a little brighter). You must have good calluses on your fretting fingers by now. Always improves the playing, tone, and sustain.

Nice acquisition, JJJ ...
Funny about the way two nearly identical instruments can sound so different, isn't it? That triangular sound hole is weird ... I wonder if it really changes anything, or if it's more for eye appeal? Ovation's multiple sound holes in the upper bout are another oddity.

Stick Men "Whale Watch" Somewhere in the US, 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjGX3lio1C0
The Stick men released their first live CD in January 2014, compiled with footage from their tour of the album "Deep". The musicians are Tony Levin on Chapman Stick (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, etc.), Pat Mastelotto on drums (King Crimson), and Germany's Markus Reuter (touch guitar). Musically and performance-wise, there really is nothing quite this that I know of. The live DVD is called "Power Play", and it is both soulful and powerful ... enjoy.

I did a Christmas Eve gig when I was bass in a duo. We were warned as we set up not to bother with the people on the other side of the room as they were "trash". Then we got the same story from the "trash" keep away from them over there!
All went well till the last song when the whole club errupted. Within minutes there wasn't a whole table, glass, window or door. I now try to avoid playing on Christmas Eve. Who wants to go through Christmas with a black eye and missing teeth? And some in jail? It takes all sorts I guess.
Quite an experience, Phill ... did you happen to be playing Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz"?

Re: 2017 hits in review (7 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
A friend who worked in the media / broadcasting industry explained the whole "Billboard" system to me many years ago. Here's a synopsis of his comments:
"Have you ever noticed a radio announcer introducing a brand new release by an artist, by describing it as a hit? This should tell you something. It's not a hit because of popularity, because no one's heard it yet! It's a hit simply because the artist's agent has paid for promotional time on the mainstream networks. In other words, the public is being told that a song is a hit that they should like, whether or not that's warranted."
I've never been one to permit someone else to tell me what I should or shouldn't like. Just because something's "popular" doesn't mean it's any good, or (more to the point) something I have to like because "the star maker's machinery" (Joni Mitchell) is telling me I should. The link to the Billboard list contains two Canadian embarrassments IMHO, being Justin Beiber and Drake.

Sounds like a rough experience, Graham ... I'm so glad you got yourself and your gear out of there intact.
I packed in performing decades ago, because very few people want to hear (or usually know about) what I like to play. (acoustic Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc.) It's not party music and I'm not a party person, so I really can't blame them. The last song I ever played publicly was Floyd's "Julia Dream" at an open mic coffee house in the late-70's ... got blank stares as a response, before someone asked if I'd play America's "Horse With No Name". I just left ... never again.

Yep, that's an original alright ... brilliant use of a cello! I wonder if it's standard cello tuning (C - G - D - A) or re-tuned like a standard bass guitar (E - A - D - G)? It looks like he's using the cello tuning, but I'm not 100% sure.
