My most expensive is my $300 Yamaha A/E. I actually got it on sale for $250. So yeah, $300 is my max. I don't think I could ever spend more than that on a guitar. As much as I love playing, my money would be better spent on other things. I know Martins, Taylors, Gibsons, etc. are supposed to be the bees knees, but I'm not on that bandwagon. Haven't ever played a high-end guitar and really don't care if I ever do. I tend to shy away from things that have a lot of hype attached to them. Even if the hype is correct.

Big ups to Zurf!!!!

To take it a step further, lots of cults are started in that way. They find passages and pluck them out and that's their belief system. Taken out of context you can manipulate a passage to your liking. So that's how dangerous it is to not have the whole story together.

Deadstring is correct. Things will happen that lead up to the end of the world. It's not just gonna happen one day.

Hello fellow strummers!!

Gave my first guitar lesson tonight. It was pretty cool. The kid is 17 and seems excited about learning to play. I look forward to watching him grow. So much stuff to cover tho.

Hello Chordians!!!!
This may have been covered before but........

Wanted to take a poll on which you prefer:

The hard driving, ear drum splitting, head banging sounds from an electric

or

The melodic, gets in your soul, natural sound of an acoustic.

I lean toward the acoustic. I listen/watch in awe at guys like Tommy Emmanuel, Andy Mckee, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reid. You know what I'm talking about. Although my favorite genre of music is 80's hair bands. That is nothing but electric to the nth degree. I think I appreciate the artistry that comes from an acoustic guitar. It seems to me that it takes more talent to get an acoustic to sound like the fellas I mentioned than it does to get an electric to scream and melt your face off. I liken it to the diff between a photo and a pencil drawn picture. While both are great in their own right, I much prefer the pencil drawing because of the talent and work behind it. Hope that makes sense.

Nice Ed!!! Sounds like you had a great time. Some day I need to go to a festival. Been to quite a few concerts but not a huge festival.  Makes you fell good to check one off your list after so many years.

Glad to hear that you son is doing better. Prayers for your family are going up. Maybe next time he wants to go see a music group he should think twice.

Well, I did something that I'm not proud of, but it was a means to an end.
I had 2 guitars just sitting around collecting dust. 1 was a 3/4 size made in china piece of wood that was supposed to be my son's but it was too big for him right now and was really cheap. The other was my first guitar. An Ibanez dread that was nothing special, it came in one of those players pack things. I've had it since 2002 I believe. I learned on it but now have better and easier to play guitars that I like more. So, I heard on the radio that Guitar Center was having a trade-in day. I took the 2 in and waited around while they looked things up, my son was banging on some drums for quite a while, end of story is I left there with $50. $40 for the Ibanez and $10 for the junker. I knew I wouldn't get much even if I craigslisted them and was tired of having them just taking up space. $10 or $20 more would have made me feel better, but it is what it is. they are out of my hair and I have $50 more in the bank. I could have applied that money and gotten 15% off if I bought something, but I'm trying not to do any extra spending right now. Besides, I couldn't think of anything that i need right now. Other than a 1/2 size for my son.

Zurf you don't by chance have A.D.D. do you? I have heard that people with A.D.D. are often good at starting things but not sticking with them. A friend of mine has it and it takes him forever to get anything accomplished and only because his wife "reminds" him about what he needs to finish. Since you have tried all those instruments listed, maybe make it a goal to try every instrument made. Cool challenge and you're half way there already. I didn't see basoon, didgeridoo, or xylephone on your list yet. lol

Did the funds come out of your " boat fund", I mean "guitar fund"?

Make up your mid what you want to ply. Guitar, bass, harmonica, didn't you mention an oboe before?

My first capo was the elastic thing too way back when. Like Doug I have a Dunlop trigger capo. I like it. It's not too big and I clip it on top of the headstock when not in use. If I ever need another one I might try the Shubb, it's so small and unobtrusive.

Maybe take it out on the street with an open case. If you're lucky maybe you can earn enough to pay for dinner.

Welcome to Chordie Chris!!!

There are lots of songs that won't sound right with just you playing. Remember that most songs are played by a band with 3 or more instruments involved. With just an acoustic guitar it is hard to reproduce the song. Unless the song was originally done with just an acoustic or acoustic driven, it might be off. As benson said, make sure your guitar is tuned, is the song played in a different key than the chords you are playing, is the song in standard tuning, is there a strum pattern discrepancy, is their acoustic plugged in with some effects added? Just some things to check out.

Good luck!!!

If you just watch these vids you think they are amazing. But if you know that Tommy had his arms replaced with robotic ones that can be programmed to do whatever he wants, then the vids seem to lose their luster.:p Ha!!

Yeah that dude is really good. And he still has fun doing it. You can see that on his face while he's playing.

Did one of your boats fall on your head Zurf? tongue Boat before guitar, I think your priorities are a little out of whack. Put a label on the jar that says "GUITAR FUND".

I make it a point not to have a "guitar fund". That would cause me to have, dare I say it, too many guitars. By too many I mean how many do u really need? I have 5 now, two I need to sell cuz they don't get played. The other 3 are diff and I think that's as big as my collection will be. Maybe add an electric someday. And I just couldn't bring myself to spend $1k on a guitar even if I had that much to spend.

Welcome Bren!!!

You have to understand that things do not happen overnight. You must practice alot and you must practice correctly. If you keep at it you will progress and be happy. Don't get too frustrated. If you do then take a little break. Maybe try to learn a few diff things (chords, scales, fingerpicking) at once so when you get frustrated with one you can go to the other.

Keep at it and you will get better.

It's the Am shape just moved to the 3,4,5 strings on the 2,3 fret. If I use my index, mid, ring finger for the Am I can switch to the F just fine. I was just thinking it would be more useful to do it the other way and just move the shape instead of spaghetti fingers. They are bent at a diff angle because they're 1 string up, but still the same shape.

So I'm going from Am to  barre F. I'm playing Am with middle, ring, pinky. So my question is, are you guys able to keep your fingers in the same relation to each other and just move them up?  Or do u relax and plant them again? I'm working on keeping them in the same position but.............

I disagree Damien. I've been married for 14 years and haven't gained a thing. Maybe a little muscle as I've been working construction for the past 9 years. I've been 135-140 since high school. I eat anything I want and don't pay attention to what is bad for me. I eat a little for breakfast, a little for lunch, and always have seconds for dinner. I just have a really high metabolism. I try to do a little cardio just to burn off the little pudge in the mid-section.

Amy, strumming is exercise. It helps keep your loose and limber.

Hey all!!!

I have never played for an audience and at this point I don't have a desire to. I can't sing at all and I get kinda nervous just playing with a friend of mine. So I was just wondering, for those of you who play gigs, how did you get into playing for an audience? What was your first attempt?

Here's a plan Zurf. Now that the weather is getting nicer, you can hike farther to those untouched fishing spots in the beautiful mountains you frequent. Bigger fish, losing weight, being outdoors, you can't go wrong. Oh, and bring your travel guitar too.

I'm with ya Jerome. I wanted to expose my 7 yr old son to some of my music. It's really hard to find classic rock that is ok for children to listen to. I did it, but it took alot of lyric reading to pull it off.

I mentioned my 7 yr old, like Zurf's kids he like Phineas, Planet Sheen(which is really hilarious for adults too), Avatar, stuff like that. I that the almighty Lord above that he never got into Oobi or Yo Gabba Gabba( he does actually watch this some times). If you've ever seen these 2 shoes you know what I'm talking about. The worst shows ever put on the air.

Shame on you Scott!!!! Why would you neglect a perfectly good guitar like that? What has it done to you? I bet it has given you hours of love and you stick it in a lonely, cold case. I hope it forgives you and sings like a good guitar should.
