it's given me time to think about things i don't normally think about.

my favourite smells...

fresh cut grass
bacon cooking in the morning
smell of a brand new car fresh from the showroom
Ann's Sunday lunch cooking
Samsara on Ann's neck which usually ends up on my lips
freshly cut wood
the haunting aroma of a new amp when it's first switched on
freshly baked bread, still warm with the butter melting...

Great words and story Jim. Can I make one suggestion? Last line 2nd verse; change "her heart was full of lies" to "her heart was all lies" it's closer to the metre.

nice recording Jim, shame about the volume being low. are you using a pick to strum? you'd get a clearer sound from the guitar.

Hi Jeff. glad you enjoyed it, I'm in the process of recording it as we speak. I do it in a rock and roll, almost Chuck Berry style, if it turns out good I will post it later tonight.

thanks Jim, I'm happy to say you were first to see it, and that you helped me to up-load it, I didn't think a simple thing like writing a single B in square brackets would throw the whole thing into a tizzy!
My grandmother actually helped me buy my second guitar (not my dad as in the song) my first broke within a few days !!! slight adjustments you understand also he never ran me around to gigs or pay for hotel rooms though he was a lorry driver so he knew all about driving up and down the motorways!
broken down vans, punctures and driving home in the heavy snow with no heating, are all true and as you say; people don't see the hours of rehearsal, scrimping for cash to buy equipment, hours driving to gigs, hours on stage then driving home again. drink and drugs were never on my to-do list, but I knew guys that did.
ps; guess what chopro just did it again hence no brackets.

This is a song all about getting started in the live music business, some of it is fact some with a little fiction added but all of it is true.

Daddy Said.

Daddy SaidUndefined

[A] Ya cant make a living out of rock and roll.

Well [D] that's what my daddy said.

[E] Two hundred miles from one gig to the next.

[D] Drink and drugs and [A] sex.

[A] The next hotel looks just like the last.

And the [D] faces all look the same.

[E] A glass of wine and a mug of beer.

Is that [D] all you get for the [A] fame?

[D] Many a night in a [Daug] broken down van.

[Bm] Freezing to death in the [B7] snow.

Or [E] changing a tyre in the [C] pouring down rain.

I'm [D] telling you cos you aught to [F#] know. -[E]

(CHORUS)

It's a [A] hard life to live.

It's a [D] long hard climb to the top.

It's [E] harder when you get to the peak.

It's [D] easy to let go and [A] drop.

It's a [A] hard life to live.

Are you [D] sure you want to live like that?

I've been [E] there myself, driving up and down the roads.

And [D] that's what my daddy [A] said.

[A] Ya cant make a living out of rock and roll.

Without [D] paying for the life you live.

[E] Jack “D” will make you pay the toll.

The more you [D] drink the more you [A] give.

He [A] shook his head then he bought me a guitar.

[D] Got it from the second hand store.

He [E] drove me to the gigs and he paid for the rooms.

I guess he [D] couldn't do any [A] more.

[D] Many a night in a [Daug] broken down van.

[Bm] Freezing to death in the [B7] snow.

Or [E] changing a tyre in the [C] pouring down rain.

I'm [D] telling you cos you aught to [F#] know.-[E]

I have a pal that does a lot of fingerpicking and country he is also an aficionado of Shadows music. So, just before Christmas he was out walking his dog and tripped over a curb and made a mess of his fingers. He is the proud owner of around a dozen or so guitars, sixers, twelvers acoustic and electric and a bass or two. He told me he wouldn't be able to play for at least a month! When his fingers healed he tried to get back in the saddle but found all his callouses had softened so playing was painful, in fact like starting over. I think he's getting there now and the last little jam we had he was OK but I didn't push him too much. Practise is essential whether your practising runs, riffs, scales or chords. I usually manage 10 minutes most days, it really tells when I lay off for any time.

Hi Bill, happy new year to you three. To say we've missed you would be an understatement! Firstly, I'm sorry to hear of your fight with the big C, on top of all your other problems. But on a better note, maybe top "C"? Congratulations on beating the beast and not forgetting your new addition, Christopher; may be live long and prosper as is my wish for you and the lovely Dondra.
Looking forward to photos and many new posts from you my friend... Ann also extends her congratulations and requests you kiss the baby for her?
Congrats also to the parents.

Thanks Jim. There seems to be a flaw in the chopro code, eg; if you write a B chord in square brackets chopro interprets it as a command to write in bold letters so it must be closed, eg: word   therefore if you want to put in B chord you must add Maj or 7th? [Gmaj] I will post the song again hopefully correctly. Fingers crossed.     Thanks for your help and putting me on the right track Jim aka tigljk

Thanks Jim, just the chords and lyrics. I keep getting the same message which I can't remember now something about B opened illegally. I've gone through the sticky and adjusted accordingly, still nothing. I'll try again later.

Lovely song Jim. It plays great too. I changed the chords a bit, adding an Em a Bm also an Am in the second part of the verses. If I get time next week I'll send it to you.

John Lennon's middle name is Winston after the ex PM, but everybody knows that....right?

His son Julian was named after John's mother... Julia.

My father's name was Llewellyn, but no one could pronounce it so they called me Phillip!

I kinda sold out many years ago. I wanted to be in an original band playing rock music, but we never got many gigs. so the focus turned to playing pops, ballads and country songs, then sneaking in a few rockers towards the end when the punters are too inebriated to complain! that was the 70's, things have changed since. maybe it's my generation, late 60's, but all the acts i see these days are playing "don't stop believing" "human" both songs by that name, "another brick in the wall" etc, etc. they also love line dancing...anything but originals they talk through anything they've never heard before. i saw a guy in my local last week who charged £100 for the night, when he does his simply red tribute he charges £500....go figure, i didn't rate him for the £100. if you come to the UK you'll have to sing in english!

I have a gig box in which I carry essentials, spare strings, plectrums, various guitar FX with tuners included, and a headstock tuner for acoustic. I also have a lint free cloth to wipe the sweat from the woodwork and strings as sweat contains chemicals that will wear away the paint and lacquer and damage the strings. We're all different.

Hi Jim, I miss Bill too...BIG TIME! I'm hoping he's well.

I saw someone on the infernal net made a comment about even modern pop songs using the old C-Am-F-G chord sequence, almost all songs from the 50's had this riff. and their still using it today, old habits die hard?

I don't actually understand the fahrenheit scale any more since we went all European, maybe they'll change it back now we've left. Graham and I both agree that it was a big mistake we'll all have to pay for.

Keep warm my friend

so....have you ever been noodling and found a chord sequence and thought "that's original?" only to find you've used it many times before, if not you then every other guitarist in the world? i thought i had until i realised i'd used it in another key, well several other keys. so...how do you make a well known chord sequence sound original? sequence being; Bm-G-A...ETC then i realised it sounded nice with a reggae beat or rhythm so i'm working on it, the story is a little off track at the moment. i may post it when i've finished it if it sounds good.

anyone else found themselves in this predicament?

ps, i know it's friday so i don't expect any replies any time soon. have a nice weekend and happy february

Hi jiasmith, welcome to Chordie. First off, if you have a question you'd get more help by starting your own thread. I've attempted to move your post but messed up somehow. Don't worry I'll get it sorted. Oh and sorry I can't answer your questions.
