Hi i am new to chordie. I know a lot of chords and how to read them. I cant figure out how to play songs though because none of the songs on chordie show the strum patterns. Please help me in figuring out how this is done.

P.s. Chordie Rocks.

Strumming pattern diagrams are available to view and study but honestly the best way to figure out a desired pattern is to tear into the song and do your own thing with it. Listen, without talking to anyone, to the guitar part in the song you wish to learn. Too many people hear songs without actually listening to them, there's a huge difference. Concentration, and mental absorption, note by note, measure by measure, song by song, will eventually come to you. Who knows, maybe you'll create a whole new style of music....................

Great advice. Use your own strumming pattern and create an interesting version of a song.

Hey Geoaguiar ,
Reminds me of this one time , forty years ago when I was about fourteen .
One of my buddies came over one day to sing and play , and he walked in the door with this bag of bananas .
I'm like , what are they for , and he says , well he heard that if you take the skins , dry them in the oven , you can smoke them .  Again , I'm like , oooo kay . So we peel all these bananas and eat them ( did'nt want to waste them right ? ) Then put all these skins on my mom's cookie sheets into the oven they go . Well ,we were both feeling a little green from eating all these bananas
and words can not describe the smell coming from the oven.........Needless to say everything got thrown away ,
and when my mom came home to that smell and the mess on her cookie sheets , we were both in deep s--t .
I got the blame and his mom got a call .
That was my first and last time experimenting with crap like that .
After that and to this day I say , just give me a beer.......

Too funny. I've heard the finished banana products caused no buzz but extreme migrane like headaches. I too would choose the beer. These sorts of things are made up b y the same people who used to suck the nitrous out of whipped cream cans!!!!! But I'm way too young to remember that ;-)

F... plain and simple. Because I still remember the days when I couldn't get it right (even though it was years ago) and now it's second nature. There's something triumphant about that.

When your collection and skill level is more advanced then maybe a different approach but I like the blind test drive method myself..
My 2 cents for what they're worth (please note I am a cheap bastard so that could factor into my method)

Good info here from geoguitar. One additional thing I might do after playing the many various guitars in the store and you've found that 'magic guitar' for you is, go home and research the price on said guitar from many various locations. Print out the best advertised price, take it back to the music store you initially went, and see if they'll match the best price you found. It's worth a try at least. There's huge mark-up in musical instruments.

Couldn't agree more. Even the chain stores will drop their prices significantly. Beat them up. If the independent guy is close to the chain stores give him a chance. I'd really hate to see the small music store get extinct. It already seems to be happening in my neck of the woods (New England USA). The service and advice IS worth something.

This is about 2 things:
- An entire song with lousy lyrics
- Phrases from a song who are completely stupid.
First some information: THE WAY PROFESSIONAL CRITICISMS ARE WRITTEN. I am convinced that a lot of guys giving "official critics" are "frustrated musicians". One of the best examples is the PROCOL HARUM song A WHITER SHADE OF PALE, a fantastic song with non-sense lyrics. I adore bands writing complex lyrics by mixing and rhyming. But here we go, the ranking is at random.
LYRICS:
1) I look at the floor, and I see it needs sweeping, Still my guitar gently weeps.
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" The Beatles
2) Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti. "Africa" by TOTO. As I can remember OLYMPUS is in Greece and is the mountain of the GODS.
3) Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball "OASIS" "Champagne Super Nova"
3) I'm as serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer SNAP "Rhythm is a Dancer"
4) "If I was a sculptor but then again, no" ELTON JOHN  'Your Song' (lyrics by Bernie Taupin)
5) "There were plants and birds and rocks and things" AMERICA  'Horse With No Name'
Funny isn't it: plants birds rocks and things (WHAT THINGS? snakes, desert-alligators?)

I love songs with weird lyrics. I think that's the charm. You mention some great songs above. Every knows them no one could write the lyrics down... That's the greatest part. These types of songs are so "musically" fantastic that they lyrics don't matter...
How about the Beatles "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" off the White Album. Fantastic song..lyrically not very complex

Yes, definitely drug related...I think he was referring to the Anarchists Cookbook. Reputedly there was a recipe in there to make some sort of narcotic out of bananas... Come on Chordians...Someone out there knows of this...Someone out there has DONE this....Fess Up

Try Elixir strings. They sound great and are a little easier on your fingers. They also seem to last a little longer. They cost about twice as muck but I think they're worth it

Agreed Doc. Youtube helps me out a bunch. I enjoy the variety of styles and covers and sometimes hearing the strumming patterns/styles people use makes me reexamine the way I might have played. There are some fantastic covers on there. Sometimes it'll even open your eyes to new bands you may not have even thought of investigating. Chordie's song books do the same. If there is a book with songs I recognize and enjoy, I will usually investigate the ones I'm not familar with. Sometimes I find a band I grow to love

1978 - Aerosmith's Draw The Line tour.

Wasn't a great show. They messed up the intro into Dream On twice and Steven Tyler got pissed  and tossed a monitor off the stage. They must have been peaking their drug use at about that time. I remember reading a quote from Tyler years later something like - We went from musicians dabbling in drugs to druggies dabbling in music. Glad they got their act together - I have seen them many times and they seem to get better with age.

I saw Aerosmith in 78 as well in Boston, MA. Same sort of experience. I was really looking forward to the show, our seats were awful but at least we were in the building. Joe Perry was so wasted I think they had him propped up. Very dissapointing (of course back i those days we probably needed propping as well!!!)

Play as many as possible. Don't let a brand name influence your decision. There are some great guitars out there from some less famous brands.

I never tried ELIXIR strings, everyone tells, in their comments that Elixir strings ARE the best strings, and in particular NANOWEB strings
About the price: a package of Elixir strings = 27€ = 41$ YES 41$!!!
On EBAY you pay 55$ for SIX packages of 6 acoustic strings (0.10....) extralight

Try them I think you'll love them. I was sceptical at first. I'm not one to try the new and improved stuff just because. A good salesman told me to try them so I did and I'm glad.

Doc, another great thread

I hate musicians who upon making it big become pompous and try to tell the rest of us how to think and act. Guys like  Bono and Sting (sorry U2 and and Police fans); I like their music enough (though I'm really not a fan but their music doesn't offend me). To steal Old Newbie catch phrase "Shut Up and Play". I'd love to save the world Bono but I'm busy trying to pay my mortgage!!!! Remember when you had a mullet and were just another Irish singer. At what point did these guys become smarter than the rest of us? Was it when they had commercial success and money? Don't tell me what my responsibility is...Shut your mouth and be happy you're rich and famous... because there are plenty of guys out there with more talent and no record deal. You're lucky...shut up and live your life. If you want to make a difference do it quietly. Sell your mansion and buy a modest house in Surburbia. Give ALL your money to your beloved charity. Then I'll be impressed. Spend your Sundays at a soup kitchen not for the photo op but because you want to make a diiference.
And while I'm on rant...what about all these heavy metal guys who dressed like chicks to get famous and then took of the spandex and became tough??? Motley Crue, Poisin and all those other D-bags. Hey, again the music doesn't offend me and I'm sure they're plenty talented enough but am I supposed to forget you dressed like a tranvestite to get famous. Where's the integrity?
What happened to the artists who gave a shit about what was in the music and not so much about what people were buying????

Since I first started playing I've been using an electronic tuner. I bought a pitch pipe 20 years ago but about a week later someone hipped me to the electronic tuner and I bought it (for a lot of money back in the day) and never looked back (I still have it and it still works). I personally have no natural "ear" to speak of (or talent for that matter!) so I can't imagine life without a tuner. Being a bad player AND out of tune is not where I want to be (cue the howling dogs). I've met a few people over the years who are against electronic tuners but most really couldn't tune by ear especially without a known good reference point (at least one string is in tune). These people always frustrated me because as much as they tried most were never in tune even though they "did it without the machine".
I guess I'm against something turning the machines for me but I wouldn't give up my tuner for anything..Heck my Takamine has one built into the pick up (real cool!!!)
There is NOTHING worse than playing with some jackass who thinks he can tune without a tuner and is always out of tune. Makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Using a tuner isn't cheating or cheesy it's smart.

Try that song!!! If you listen to Cake's version it'll blow your mind. It's the first song I play 90% of the time I pick up an acoustic guitar. As far as women who've had too much to drink: that's a great place to be at!!!!

Doll - Jack Johnson has kinda passed me by. One of those guys I keep meaning to check out. I think I really must. And, man of the cloth? I think my cloth is a bit threadbare and still a work in progress.

NELA - Yup. Love those blues. Usually in the key of E (I think).

Now, geoaguiar, you have intrigued me with I Will Survive. Could be interesting. This is a song that a LOT of women sing in Scotland when they've had a bit too much to drink

Thanks again.

I keep my laptop loaded with my tabs in notepad and also keep a binder and a a USB thumb drive...I also have a harder time with remember chord progressions sometimes confusing one song with another
