More like two day trip!

Ha! Yep, I've done it in two days before, from San Jose, CA to Mercer, PA (about an hour north of Pittsburgh). Not the easiest thing in the world to do, but then there were fewer cars - and fewer state boys on the road back in those days...

Any linkable examples of the annoying pickup in question?

I dunno - I think perhaps this song is incongruous with the ukulele.

IMO, the uke sounds far too "happy" for a lyric such as this, d'ya get what I mean? Maybe if the tempo were slower, or the strumming was a different pattern or summat.

Can you do it on guitar? I quite like the lyrics, and would like to hear it on a 6- (or even a 12-) string...

I like both versions --

After listening to the second one, I got the idea to do the vox backward thru a megaphone and mix the uke a bit lower to give both a 'softer' and a bit more 'far-away' sound, then add some "scratchy" and "popping" effects to make it sound like it was recorded in the 1920s (yes, I know the subjects in the song are contemporary people - that's the joke)...

Example (and useable files) of the kinda thing I'm talkin' 'bout:
freesound dot org
partnersinrhyme dot com
99sounds dot org
and youtube Old Scratchy Record (which, of course, has links to similar clips)

I dunno - whaddaya think?

Cheers,
Cocktails

Alas, I do not know enough about the differences between the different types of humbuckers to be able to tell, so I'm of no help to you, Funster.

Interesting song, Mojo. I like it.

Have you thought of repeating the

I am just a lonely man
with an old guitar in my hand

I hope that God forgives
wont hold a grudge for the life I've lived

no one knows where the road will end
when I get there I hope I see you again

section, and using it as a chorus?

There was a time when I thought that anyone who needed to use a music stand (other than for a song or two, or classical musicians who obviously need the score) was lacking or lazy.

And, like many others, there was a time when I had alla the lyrics in my head...

Then I went to having a few lyric sheets on the floor...

Then I went to keeping a small manilla file or binder on a stand...

And if I ever get back to a performing situation, I will be getting the clip to hold the iPad to the mic stand, or a stand of its own.

If a Teleprompter wad good enough for Sinatra, it's good enuff for me!

Well, you haven't met my in-laws yet - we're all (me, wife, mother- father- brother-in-law) vacationing in Yosemite right now, and my mother-in-law - while a dandy guitar player & singer - has been driving everyone up the wall the entire time. She used to be a fairly "normal-ish" person, but now is such a bundle of neuroses that we're all about ready to take her up to Yosemite Falls and...

Yes, sir - the Energy Domes (sometimes referred to as "flower pots") were worn well after they'd established themselves as a real band, and not just a novelty act.

You are again correct, sir! There were indeed Bobs "1" & "2," Bob Mothersbaugh (Guitar, Lead Guitar) and Bob Casale (Keyboards, Guitar, R.I.P. 2014), brothers of Mark Mothersbaugh (Lead Vox/Keyboards/Guitar/Frontman/The Guy With The Glasses) and Gerald Casale (Bass/Keyboards).
