I have just posted two new songs on Myspace - click on the Website link to the left to have a listen. I'll warn you in advance that the recording could be much better, but time is of a premium at the minute and I have more new songs to prep for upload.

They are

"Nobody, but Nobody" - which was first posted as a poem  at http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=14370 .

And

"If I Could Sleep" -  first posted at http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=13964 .

My daughters say they don't want to be feminists, because they just want to be equal to men - not better than them. I said they'd have a long way down to go to get there - but they threw stuff at me.

Can someone tell me why it took 80 odd years for a woman to finally win Best Director in the Oscars?

The verse to this came to me after reading a piece in American Songwriter on an Artists community in Austin, Texas. It came words and music together. I'm still not happy with the melody for the chorus, but we're getting there. I got some rough recording done tonight of a couple of the pieces I have posted. I'll get them up on myspace over the next few days.

Somewhere There's a Place called Austin.

Somewhere there's a place called Austin
A place where hearts don't get broke
A place where lovers never leave
Some things aren't so hard to believe

There's a whiskey sour goin' stale by the kitchen door
And a broken glass that floods across the floor
There's a door key that was flung into the night
And an emptyness that says that she was right.
He sits and stares. He cannot sleep
Wishin' spoken words had never been.

And there are memories of Pease Park and the jazz
A day of love she hoped would never pass.
There were old men wringin' tears from simple tunes
And a warm walk home beneath a hunter's moon.
But she sits and stares and cannot cry
She took her love and walked away.

The telephone sits cradled in his palm
She stares at hers, says "You know where I am."
He scrolls through all those names on the screen
The ex-es, the ghosts in the machine.
He hesitates. She waits for him to ring,
Then flicks the mobile off - leaves everything.

Thanks, Lena.

It now has a tune. It just came to me this morning. I was huming it as I woke up. Now that's never happened before - where did that come from ?!

Hope I don't dream up a screamer - might wake up she who must be obeyed !

Wonder what you think of this. I've no tune as yet.

Nobody, but Nobody.

Nobody, but nobody
Makes me feel so good
Nobody, but nobody
Can do me like you do
There's no-one else in this wide world
Can turn my troubles into gold.
There's no-one else I know
Brought me in from the cold.

Don't think me wrong,
Don't take it bad,
Don't take it strange,
Don't think it sad.
You taught me one fine thing,
That love is all you need.
It sweetens everything.

Nobody, but nobody
Ever held me like you do
Nobody, but nobody
Ever told me the truth
There's no-one else in this wide world
Stood up for me like you.
There's no-one else I know
Cared enough to pull me through.

Nobody, but nobody
Stayed around like you did
Nobody, but nobody
Ever loved me like this.
There's no-one else in this wide world
Can turn my tears to laughter.
There's no-one else I know
That I will love for ever after.

Spent a large part of last week at the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival ( http://www.belfastnashville.com/ ). Since 1994 Belfast, Ireland, and Nashville, Tennesee, have been twinned as "Sister Cities". The Belfast Nashville festiva ( or BelNash) l is an annual recognition of that relationship. The reason for this is both cities appreciating the Scotch-Irish connections between them.

I particularly focussed on the songwriting workshops. There was a great diversity of opinion on songwriting available. Jason Blume was very analytical in his presentations on Melody, Writing for the Nashville market, and Looking after business. The last of these was particularly good for suggesting opportunities to sell rights to TV and Film producers. Jason was very much high end stuff ( How do you write for the Keith Urbans, Beyonces etc).

Jerry Harmon also did a session which I found more to my way of writing - country singer/songwriter style. I had a good chat with him after the session and am going to send him some work for possible collaboration - who knows ! Andy White also did a great opening session that just let everyone talk about how they wrote - very affirming.

The final sesdsion I attended was with Iain Archer ( toured with Snow Patrol) who went all airy fairy about writing without any structure, but left you with a head full of ideas at the end of it.

There were also over 100 singer songwriters playing across the city, with showcases and off the cuff jams. Included in the price of the delegates ticket were two concerts with Nancy Griffiths and with Ralph McTell.

I'll be back next year.

According to the website it wasn't written by a soldier in harms way.

"NOTE:::There is an email circulating the Internet telling people that this song, "If I Die Before You Wake" was written by three soldiers in Iraq during their free time.  I do not know who generated this email, but that information is not true

This is song was written by Dustin Evans, Rick Tiger, and Dave Brainard.  Dustin Evans is the vocalist and the Good Times Band are the musicians.  In Dustin's words, "The song came from a good place, it is our way of paying tribute to our brave soldiers and the sacrifices their families are making"."

We all have a duty of care for those in the forces. Because of that, I have a bit of a problem with the line " I want you to know it ain't too high a price to pay
If I die before you wake.  "  But only if it wasn't written by a soldier in harms way.

Over the weekend I walked into town to pick up the car we had left the night before. It was early in the morning and halfway there a snow storm brewed. I walked on drenched and half frozen, wishing I'd kept to my bed. I was acompanied part of the way by a group of young girls in high heels, short skirts and vodka bottles. We walked past a number of guys sleeping in doorways - one of them was clutching a guitar . . .

Almost Beautiful

I was cold and wet and wan
You were hot and hyped and high.
And you glistened in the morning mist
With that boldness in your eye

And you were almost,
Almost beautiful
I was almost,
Almost gone.
Still,Your high heels tracked
Across the road
And you begged me
For a song.

How could i refuse you,
All legs and eyes and else ?
So I kicked away my cardboard bed,
Yawned and shook myself

Now I don't sport my guitar
On wild, wet winter morns,
But I opened up that Martin case
And struck an Eb chord.

Right there I saw you shiver,
Right there I saw you shake
And you closed your eyes and danced
To the music that I made.

And I played until the stars fled
You danced away your pain.
I played until my fingers bled,
Till night came round again

And I woke to find me in your bed
Washed and dry and warm
And I'm wonderin' do I get to stay
Or should I be wanderin' on?

You can also practice finger positions by holding down the chord as per normal , strumming, then taking one finger off - then placing it back again. Do that for all the fingers you are using. You can also develop some interesting little tunes as you practice that way. Makes the practice time more interesting.

"I closed my eyes and was able to play through an entire song without staring at the neck"

Which means you should also be able to sling that axe behind your own neck and do a Jimmy Hendrix - just make sure there's no-one watching the first few times or they'll think you're a nut !

The problem will be how to keep it going - how to run it as a business. It is the recurrant costs that have to be met.

SOS,

EMI have announced that they are selling Abbey Road Studios in London. Yes, the Beatles' Abbey Road. The name alone will probaly boost the price by millions .

The British "National Trust" are asking if they should buy the studios for it to be saved from becoming another car park. If you think it should be saved then tell them what you want to happen . You can do this on Facebook and Twitter - details here

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w- … tudios.htm

As far as I am concerned this is a World Heritage site, with links to dozens of Artists who could contribute to it being bought and saved. Question is what artisits and groups recorded there down the years ?

Really like this, Phil.

I am, however rather put off by the "God" in the title. I know others won't be. Just a thought, but the first line in the chorus might also serve as a title ?

A little frivolous thing - but why not ?! It needs two more verses.

Hey serious, great upbeat tune you have there !

I have been playing the acoustic for around 35 years. I still sound like a beginner, however, when I play the electric, even if I am well able to hit the chords. It's controling the additional sustain that is the problem for me. Oh, and leaving the electric boxed in the roofspace for years on end too !

I guess we have all found (or are looking for) a publisher to flick the pages and  treasure what they find.
