I got plenty of time on my hands Russel ... dont mind giving it a go at mixing and adding instruments etc ... though I would not put anyone through the suffering of my vocals .

Hi Flatpicker .... the cabin idea would be brilliant ! ... there is no place like it and am sure people would go for it . Unless you go to an "open mic" night in a pub etc its hard for people who are into accoustic  sounds having anywhere . Really sounds good .  On the other note ... I am only in plaster for another 3 weeks ...it was a repair job because I broke my leg last year in three places and dislocated my foot .. it didnt heal properly . In a way its nice to have a few  weeks to indulge myself with being lazy ... and plenty of time to learn my banjo .

Hi flatpicker ... seems we dont live to far apart so if you ever come near plymouth and fancy having a bit of a jam with my guitar or banjo give me a shout .. cant drive myself though for a few weeks , just had an operation at derriford on my ankle and am in plaster for a few weeks , plenty of time on my hands - thats why I got the banjo as something else to learn while off of work .

Thank you marcalan ... but my banjo is not able to be open back. Thanks for taking the time for the advice though ... also checked out your website and your stuff is really well done . Great voice style and clean recording etc ... sounds like you play for a living ?.

I  do the same as you ian ... and find most songs on here are of the same key as the artists playing but now and again they are not ... all I do is pluck a few notes and work out what these notes would be if I used a chord with these same plucked ones . Sometimes takes a few seconds and sometimes longer . Just my way though ... I dont work with trying to use the capo to find them as I dont think to many bands use them and think most are basic chords - then using the great transpose thing on here . Though using a capo once you have found the original chords would be fine I suppose as a different way of harmonising ... thats just my way and no doubt others will have there way .

Just had to comment when I saw someone elese on here say about the noise when practising the banjo .... Thats the one thing thats holding me back ... I live in a small house and have neighbours beside me and up above at the back on a bank  ... I am always muting the frailing or picking because of the racket I make with it and it really is inhibiting me learning . Once in a while I will go loud with it for about a minute  ( about once a week ) ... then stop because I know I can be heard etc .... I wished I lived a bit more secluded ...lol

This wont help a bit -except to let you know it can be done . my printer is an epson 1290c ... and I printed out on A3 with no probs . sounds like a pc problem .

I agree with zurf ... it also saves a lot of writing .

Try your own way of picking , strumming or whatever . Nothing is wrote in stone how you should play .  VARY IT - DO YOUR THING . If it sounds good then do it . Session musicians need to know that stuff .... but we are allowed to do our own thing .

By the way .. I dont know who does their translating - but I found this quite funny . This is a complete copy and paste and unedited by me .

I am getting ready for a hospital operation and am getting ready to lay on the sofa for about 8 weeks ( true ) ... so I am getting my mandolin ready as something to do positively while I am laid up . ( I already play guitar) .... so I was thinking about getting a ukulele as well to pass the time . But I went on a few websites and couldnt believe the prices .I dont want to waste money on something that is cheap and unplayable but cant afford £ 300 ( 200 dollars aprox) . Is there a big difference in quality on such a small basic instrument ? as I always thought of them as a kind of toy until now . ( forgive me uke lovers - my opinion has changed since listening to stuff done with it - its amazing when played well ! ) ..... I expected to pay about £ 30 ( 20 dollars aprox ) .

Looked on you tube ( but no luck ) for the correct open g tuning for the mandon as it seems to give a brilliant bluegrass sound . Can anyone tell me what the strings need to be tuned as ? Also - when I heard the stuff being played it seemed to be a lower tone  ( ie strings tuned looser ) - which I quite fancy as the strings on my mandolin are way to tight and are killing my fingers even though they are reasonably tough from guitar playing . thanks .

Thanks t both of you for your quick reply ... very helpfull yet again ! . I knew about the swapping guitar chords for mandolin and others etc ... its just nice to have a big reference sheet to quickly look at pinned to the wall when practising as I print out in A3 so its easier to see . I find the guitar sheet excellent that you have on here . THANKS AGAIN ! .

it all depends on whether you are trying to exactly copy the song ... in that case play the cd over and over again , or do it your way . you are allowed to try a different version. though bear in mind that the original is usualy the way it was meant at the time ... no easy answers .... have fun .

get a tuner .... why waste good playing time trying to tune when no one else does ? tune up and play !

try to advertise for a singer for your stuff... duo etc... you might meet the odd singer you combine with and jam together well. trial and error . experiment .

i could never get over the fact that i was supposed to be " the big entertainer" .... having 2000 songs in my head and you would still get some drunk asking for an obscure song and you cant do it ... ( or remember the words) .... you will never - ever satisfy everybody.... you are better off working out a 1 and a half hour session spread out . and they listen to what you provide . do not do requests. unless its one that you done earlier to repeat it so as to make the night nice for you . thats just me .

if you got to ask how to play reggae .... you shouldnt be playing it .

when the building site we was working on was frozen  - me and a freind busked for money to get us over christmas for the kids  . we played in a subway in slough ( uk ) . it was freezing  !!!!!! . it wasnt the neck that caused the constant retuning  , it was the cold . making the strings brittle .

the 20s was where bands started .... mostly jazz and blues . it progressed from there . even hendrix was a pro jazz guitarist at his beginning  , playing at the back of bands .
