hey Learnin2Play321 , try strumming down, then backpicking strings 1, 2, 3, 1 for both wonderful tonight and knocking on heavens door. Once you get that you can vary the backpicking a little. Sounds great, and easy as you like. same principal for Paradise City by G 'n' R, just a little more in depth! hope this helps

That sounds rather interesting, wouldn't mind having a go at that. Do you mean count one on the strum and then 2.3.4 on the up picking on a 4/4

I agree with you doc, i certainly don't intend to purposely offend anyone. I think there's different sense of humours in different countries. What maybe someone says as a joke is obviously not taken as one by another person. It is difficult with so many different countries and generations taking part. some people are also very outrightly spoken which is just their personality.

Im a bit worried about welcome2myhead, we haven't heard from him since his last post.

I always seem to do DDUUDU or DDUDUDU

Thank you James, that explains it.I play it how i think it should sound but was getting a bit confused, i suppose because i thought everything was always in the same time throughout the song.
I love Joni mitchell's music, have been listening to her since the early seventies but i find a lot of it is a real challenge to try and play.
My favourite albums are Blue, Court and spark and ladies of the canyon.

I like playing ye banks and braes, it was a song we used to sing in school.

I would like to have the confidence to play anything in a music shop. When i went in to buy a guitar, there was a young chap serving who plays in a band.He gave me a stool to sit on to try out the guitar and i just froze, i was too shy and embarrassed to play anything! So i awkwardly just roughly strummed a few chords. I bet he thought this old twat can't even play!!

I have had trouble getting used to using a plectrum when strumming. I have been trying all sorts after some advice from chordians after posting a similar thread when i first joined. I eventually found i got on better with a soft one, its a jim dunlop .46mm. I guess it would be too soft for some people but it seems to suit me. I bought loads of different ones to try and ended up using the one that someone gave me.

Ive got no intention of learning how to read music, thankfully, that doesn't stop me learning guitar. All chordians have a passion for music whether they can actually read sheet music or not , it is not important for participation on this site. I think personally you are a bit too smug.

Hi gitaardocphil,
i have been a nurse for many years having qualified in 1975. i have worked in quite a few different places but now work in a hospice nursing terminally ill patients.I love my job and couldn't imagine doing anything else really. Playing the guitar is my form of relaxation ( thats when im not getting too frustrated !) and being with my family and friends. Most of my friends are also my work colleagues so we are all there for one another when the going gets a bit tough.
Its interesting having contact on this site with everyone from all over, with all their different views, experience and knowledge.

Hiya hopeful,

For half note strumming, it's just strumming half notes.  A half note is two beats.  Since there are 4 beats per measure, you usually strum each chord twice before moving on to the next one (there are a few exceptions in the tab i linked to.  The G to B7 and A7 to D7 at the end of the chorus are one strum each and the D to D7 at the beginning is usually 3 D's and 1 D7...or at least the way I hear it it is).  I don't think half note strumming is a technical musical term (like eighth note strumming).  Heck, if you want to do eight note strumming it' be down miss miss miss down miss miss miss , but that's kind of unnecessary on this song smile

Thankyou very much for the explanation wormproof.

I don't quite understand what you mean, if i don't press the bar down hard enough, it doesn't sound right.
Also at this stage in learning i have to stop playing when i come to the barre to get my fingers in position. At the moment i can't imagine the time when i will be able just to go straight to it without stopping, and i have been practicing for weeks, i suppose i'll just have to keep at it but it's very frustrating!

I would love to write my first song but don't feel im very good with words, struggling to know where and how to start. Did anyone else feel like that when they thought about writing one?
There's alot of chordians that write many really good songs yet im having trouble getting started. Every day a 'first' line pops into my head and then i think, nah!! Maybe one day i'll come up with something and if i do, promise not to laugh!?!

Agree with all the above James, loved listening to it.

C,S,N AND Y and Joni Micthell are 2 of my all time favourites

I think Steeleye span sung it as well but im sorry, i haven't been able to find chords either.

Seriously though chordie is a great site, i have learnt loads on here while i am learning to play.

Right now im trying to learn the barre chords and they are a real challenge.I thought the open chords were hard when i first started learning but now they seem a doddle in comparison!!
