Jets60's recent ode to his dog got me thinking about our oldest pet.

Mazie is a MastiffJames McCormick, July 6, 2007

[Em]Mazie is a Mastiff, [G]full of love and drool

She [A]grooves upon the planet, [C]howls at sirens [B7]too

[Em]Scratches where it itches, [G]sniffs at stuff that stinks

[A]Finds the perfect spot to pee and [C]puddles she can [B7]drink

She [G]used to be a saucy wench so [Em]many years ago

[C]Playful and ferocious, a [D]canine dynamo . . . [D7]

But [G]lately she's slowed down a bit, there [Em]is no hurry now

Her [C]routine is perfected, no [D]changes are allowed.[D7]

She [Em]came from Mastiff Rescue, her [G]past a mystery

We [A]saw her picture on the web, for-[C]lorn as she could [B7]be

[Em]Lookin' like an empress [G]fallen on hard times

But [A]since she joined our family, [C]life has been sub-[B7]lime

She [G]used to be a saucy wench so [Em]many years ago

[C]Playful and ferocious, a [D]canine dynamo . . . [D7]

[G]Nowadays she finds a place to [Em]relax in the shade

She's re-[C]tired from her daily [D]squirrel chase crusade.[D7]

[Em]Many times I wonder, just [G]who did rescue who

An [A]excellent companion, [C]faithful fun and [B7]true

[Em]Fuzzy gentle giant, [G]couldn't ask for more

[A]Sounds like rolling thunder [C]snoring on the [B7]floor.

She [G]used to be a saucy wench so [Em]many years ago

[C]Playful and ferocious, a [D]canine dynamo . . . [D7]

But [G]lately she's slowed down a bit, there [Em]is no hurry now

Wow!  Great internet resource - thanks for the link and the topic mherbert.

I read through their listings with great interest.  Was glad to see some of my favorite books had inspired songs.  Got to admit though that Camus' "The Stranger" being the inspiration for Sinatra's "My Way" seems a bit of a stretch to me . . .

Was interested to note that Walker Percy's "Love in the Ruins" had inspired a song by Animal Logic - not familiar with the artist, but now I have good reason to give them a listen.

I submitted "Ballad of Peter Pumkinhead" by XTC to their listings - seems to me to be directly inspired by events described in the new testament gospels.  I'm sure other examples will come to mind eventually now that I'm thinking about it.  James

Thanks daddycool and Old Doll - I guess the 'they' I refer to is a little different for everybody.  Suppose 'they' are just your personal demons whether they be monsters under the bed, or the pod-people aliens, or perhaps rabidly self-righteous zealots who want to rule the world.

This is truly silly ditty, but I enjoy all the percussive consonants in the "gitcha's" - I would love to hear Irma Thomas growl and howl her way through this one.  James

Hi nadine2 - I have the information you requested.  To 'de-register',  a registered user would simply request that their user name be deleted from the list of registered users.  Deleting a user registration can only be done by a person with administrator-level access.

The easiest way to make this request would be to log in and then send a private request via email to either myself, or Roger Guppy, or Admin.  As you stated, you were only curious - I hope to not receive such a request from anybody.  James

Here is a link to a trailer for a movie I would like to see - but somehow, I doubt it is coming to rural Mississippi.

Hi again markdrago - Sorry, but I have steered you wrong.  I looked up 'Bad to the Bone' on YouTube and listened closely.  Well, it is different that I remembered it - seems the whole song is basically the same riff all the way through (with lots of dazzling fills and embellishments, of course).

So, your best bet on this one is to decipher the tabs to get the basic riff.  Sorry for the bum steer on this one (but learning basic blues changes is still a good thing to know).

Hi nadine2 - This is something that I suppose I should know, but I do not.  The question has not come up before, so I am clueless.  I'll see what I can find out for you.

Folks, this topic is exhausted . . . I'm closing it down since it has degenerated into pointless back and forth - keep on playing music, but this topic has run it's course.

Hi gitaardocphil - You have a couple of options for sharing your song.  The easiest would be to record it and then share it via a MySpace Music page.  You simply go to MySpace Music and register, then upload your recording.  You can also post your lyrics and chords there along with the recording.

Another option is to put your lyrics and chords into chordpro format.  For the specific licks and embellishments you can notate those in tab form.  Look at the very top of the Songwriting section for details about how to that.  It takes a little time to get it all typed up, but the end result is worth the effort.

'I Will Survive' is a great song - it got overplayed when it first came out, but it has a wonderful chord set, rhythm and melody.  Let me know if I can help - James

Hi blinddog - The song is entitled "Wurlitzer Prize" and is a great old bittersweet love song by Waylon Jennings.  It is here in chordie's index under Jennings:

I'm in a blues phase.  Here's one based on an old slang expression.

Git While the Gittin's GoodJames Mccormick, August 5, 2007

12-bar blues

They'll [C]gitcha on the fly, they'll [C]gitcha unawares

They'll [C]gitcha in a bind, they'll [C7]gitcha by the hairs.

They'll [F]gitcha when your guard is down, [F]gitcha when it's late

[C]Gitcha very suddenly they [C]won't negotiate.

They'll [G7]gitcha when you're snoring, [F7]sawing up some wood.

So [C]if you're gonna git, better git while the gittin's [G7]good.

They'll [C]gitcha in a conflict, they'll [C]gitcha in a lie

They'll [C]gitcha in the back and won't [C7]even tell ya why.

They'll [F]gitcha on the ground, [F]gitcha up a tree

[C]Gitcha in the end and [C]that's a guarantee.

They'll [G7]gitcha when you're on the road or [F7]in your neighborhood.

So [C]if you're gonna git, better git while the gittin's [G7]good.

And [C]when they finally gotcha, no [C]tellin' what they'll do

It's [C]gonna be unspeakable, some-[C7]thing incredibly cruel

Don't [F]even think about it, it'll [F]only slow you down

[C]Take evasive action, try [C]not to make a sound

Don't [G7]try to make excuses, you'll [F7]be misunderstood.

So [C]if you're gonna git, better [G7]git while the gittin's [C]good.

Jeff, dogs are dogs no matter how big or small.  However, it is amazing what people will tolerate from smaller dogs.  If Chibi wrote a song about you, what would it say?  Oh no - now I've got myself thinking . . . James

Hi dakunes & welcome to chordie!  You can find tons of chord grids on chordie's 'Resources' page.  In fact, you can click on any chord and then see several alternate fingerings.  I just tried it and these images can be copied.

Another alternative is to use 'chordpro' formats for your songs.  This is what chordie uses to render the pretty songsheets (unless the source file is not chordpro formatted).  The advantage to using chordpro is that the songs are then transposable and printable.

There is a shareware application called 'Songsheet Generator' that yields very nice renderings.  You can download the software.

Hope this helps, and welcome again to chordie's forum.  James

Hi markdrago - The chord structure of 'Bad To The Bone' follows a standard blues format.  It's been years since I have heard this classic, so I can't recall whether it is an 8 or 12 or 16-bar blues cycle.

Here is a link that describes most blues chord changes - might take you a minute to decipher the jargon, but one of these patterns will probably fit 'Bone'.  You may also want to transpose their stuff into a friendlier key.
http://www.music.vt.edu/musicdictionary … ssion.html

It is not unusual for 'guitar god' stuff to only be in tab form.

I'll take a look at 'Bone' sometime soon and see if I can't fit it into chord format - now that you have reminded me of this excellent song I want to give it a thrash & howl also.

In the meantime, take a look at the link above and see what you can figure out - knowing some of basic blues changes is very useful.  James

Self Respect BluesJames McCormick, August 4, 2007

I know this thread is about phony accents and such, but here is my angle:

My singing range is tenor - I can sing lower but it really lacks the tone and resonance and sounds drab.  Plus my vocal chords wear out quickly if I try to sing lower.

There was a time when I tried very hard to develop a 'more macho' lower singing voice, but it was hopeless.  So, I learned to be proud of my tenor voice.

It also helped to discover that females are somehow naturally wild about a tenor voice . . . don't really know why, but it is true.  From young ladies to great-grandmas, they all respond very very favorably to tenor singing.

So - moral to the story is this:  If you also have a high/tenor voice be proud of it and learn to use your super powers wisely.  Don't try to make your tenor voice sound like Johnny Cash . . . it just won't work.

There is some Irma Thomas on YouTube.  I've had the pleasure of hearing her perform and she always puts on a great show.  Upyerkilt, this lady's voice packs a whole lotta power from way way down deep.
