Re: Playing the Melody vs Strumming (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi cotedmann
Welcome to Chordie.
Generally with strumming a song the melody is supplied with accompanying vocals.
Bass walks and small riffs etc in the strumming pattern add colour to the accompanyment but not the melody.
Melodies are usually played when finger picking this requires the learning of the tabs to the song and is a different ball game from strumming and usually the next step in learing the guitar as an instrument in it's own right.

Re: THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL "BLEHEAA" (11 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi Russ
I'm generally dissappointed with re-makes of Classic sci-fi films. This film sounds like more of the same.
War of the worlds
Invasion of the body snatchers
Time machine
Journey to the centre of the earth
The planet of the apes
and others I can't remember.
All fall short of the orginals even with inclusion of alot of special effects and so called top actors.
The naivety of the 50's and 60's era films are their charm and they don't generally remake well in these more cynical times.
There is talk of a re-make of "Forbidden Planet" so more of the same...

Hi all
In "Dawn" I tried to capture musically a sunrise. The quiet grey sky lightening with the appearance of the early morning sun. A sort of musical poem (I hope I'm not being to pretentious here
"Dawn" got to 11th in the ambient charts on Ourstage in February out of 247 entries..
Sorry no guitars
As always thanks for reading/listening.

My wife and I have been together over 30odd years so I can empathise with the lyrics put to together in a good song..
The recording sounds fine for home grown..
I'm wondering how you record your stuff in other words what kit do you have just being nosey.

Something I really like the sound of chord wise is to replace a ordinary D for a Dsus2 with a added F# on low E on some songs
Try it on the The house of the rising sun sounds classy..

I converted to their new homepage with a nice background (skins) and mood settings etc...
The page took twice as long to load up and I couldn't see any advantages to having the "new look" myself so I converted back to the orginal.. thanks Tom

Re: Bit rate 128 or 256 (6 replies, posted in Recording)
Hey KajiMa
Thanks for you comprensive answer
So if I've got this right basically it doesn't matter to much about the Bit rate on an MP3 uploaded to a website as it all depends on how good an amp and speakers the people have that listen to your music.
The Ourstage website will accept mp3, wav, ogg or m4a which one would be the one to go for best quality.
I do convert to CD when burning as I have notice the quality difference between the two.
As to use of headphones I have used them at resonable level for many years and feel they tend to show up problems with the mixing which would be lost if I listen through normal speakers.

Re: For Recording Virgins (30 replies, posted in Recording)
Hi and thanks for all the great info...I just have a question or 2 because with all the info out there it tends to get a little confusing. I just want to record my acoustic and my vocals, possibly a harmonica. I downloaded audacity and I am looking into getting a USB or Firewire interface. My question is will the interface cut out all that hissing I used to get when I tried going through my old pc's soundcard? and do I go to the interface from an acoustic amp or straight from my guitars electronics? I appreciate everything you all post on this sight, thanks again.
Hi quarters
Welcome to the Forum
I think you will need a pre amp on the accoustic side before you go to the interface an electric will probally plug straight in to the interface without a preamp same for a mic.
As you are going in to your computer via the interface and the recording/playback will be through your soundcard and if the hissing is down to your card it will probally be still be there.
If it's not the soundcard then an interface might do the trick but it's really trial and error.
Some sort of interface is always good to have as it allows you have different sound inputs plugged in and only uses one input to your computer.

Topic: Bit rate 128 or 256 (6 replies, posted in Recording)
Hi all
I've started to convert my finished pieces to MP3 at 256kbps instead of the usual 128. I do this now for Ourstage as this is the rate they recommend for better quality. The file size is larger but the site can accommodate this.
Mostly I listen though reasonable quality headphones to my pieces as my hifi is not up to much and I can't really tell any difference between the two rates.
I wondered just how high the quality of your sound system would have to be before you perceive any noticeable difference in the two rates and what is actually lost when you convert to a low rate.
Thanks

Re: Backing tracks (16 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi micky the mooch
A simple question. Yes you can make your own if your've got a computer I guess you have and a little software and you have it "Audacity"
If you tried to record your song in one hit to Audacity then you won't be able to take out the vocals. Each track should be recorded separately to Audacity and mix together after.
In a simple song record the guitar track first then playback the track and record your vocals on a second track singing along to your guitar.
Start off small until you get the hang of it then add more tracks if you want.
Russ has done some tutorials on Audacity if you need some help.

Re: I have been Hacked! (2 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Hi wlbaye
That happened to my wifes ebay account a while back. Suddenly she found she was selling a rather large four wheel drive vehicle she knew nothing about. Ebay suspended her account as they were suspicous and she had to go through a procedure to change her password etc. It's been ok ever since.
How it was hacked I'm not sure as there was no virus contamination in my computers. It must have been done directly through the Ebay site.

Earth Hour now that title does make
Good old Mother Earth spinning away in space as she has for billions of years and as she will for billions of years come whatever we do to her. Here we are mankind inhabiting her for a relatively short while maybe stratching her surface a little in our puny efforts to say alive....
Is she worried I think not she will survive whatever. We are the one's that won't..
Earth Hour should be renamed Mankind Hour as that is who we trying to save here..
