Re: Another recording question (8 replies, posted in Recording)
I do think one of the drawbacks with Audacity apps is actually not being able to hear the FX that's being applied to the track in real time. Also some of effects have to be applied numerically and can be a bit confusing when trying to apply them. so it's really down to trail and error when adding effects this way.
I nearly always apply FX to a effects clean track when recording. Then in a way you start with a clean slate.

Re: recording your songs (21 replies, posted in Recording)
Russ The Tascam is the old cassette type so it connects to the computer using a Y connector as shown in your picture.
All the virtual instruments come with the Magix software and are fairly realistic ..
It will be interesting to see how different people record they songs.
Hope members will take the time to let us in on their methods

Re: recording your songs (21 replies, posted in Recording)
Hi all
He’s the recording lowdown on “Tree of a Thousand Stars" an instrumental I recently put on the song writing forum..
The song has 6 tracks.
Track 1 A stock looped pad at 90BPM which sets the rhythm in this case fairly slow.
Track 2 A keyboard synth melody line played over the pad.
Track 3 A virtual instrument in this case full strings done entirely in the computer using a midi editor
Track 4 this again was a keyboard synth melody line which ran part of the time with the first.
Track 5 this is just a stock looped beat at 90BPM
Track 6 Another virtual instrument an oboe sound this time done the same way as the 3rd track.
Tracks were mixed in the computer in a software apps called Magix Music Maker where FX was applied levels adjusted and everything basically tweaked to suit.
Then I save to the hard drive as an MP3 at 256kbps
The Keyboard is connected to the computer via an interface which is an old four track Tascam.
I use this same interface to record guitar and vocals directly to the computer if needed.
It’s sounds a lot more complicated written down then it really is…..:)

What does chordie mean to me? I guess a lot…
Came here as most people do to find chords and tabs etc lurked the forum for while took the plunge and started to post learnt from people who knew about guitars and playing than I’d hope do in a million years and after 2and half years as member I’m still learning..
It inspired me to write songs again. Gave me the information to start computer recording which opened up to me a whole new world of recording possibilities, and also the opportunity to collaborate with first Russell and then with Roger and other members on different musical projects.
Thanks Per and to all the members of Chordie for making this one great worldwide online guitar playing community and long may it be so….

Your right no Fx on the Movie maker just fade in and out on audio side...
I thought "record" was just on the video side from a webcam..
Just burned a CD of my songs. Saving in CD format on disc certainly is an improvement in sound quality over MP3..
What's weather like your side of the pond nice spring day here

From an IT dunce:
Is it not possible to attach a Web-Cam and record into some Windows media program?
I believe Window Movie Maker on Xp will capture video from a camera. I have not tried to myself though.
I used a deicated program..

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS (19 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I just planted my peppers and Roma tomatoes and the radishes go it tomorrow it was a job lugging 120 lbs of topsoil upstairs to where my garden is but it was necessary because last year the tomatoes and peppers didn't yield as much as I had hoped for due to the fact that I didn't have enough soil in the containers so I filled them to the top and I'm looking forward a good harvest this year how many members have gardens? (the legal crops)
Hey Russ I hope roof the joists are in sound condition as I have this visions of you being buried under topsoil Tomatoes and Radishes..
I have a typical suburban garden 60x25ft lots of shrubs and roses. Grow some annuals from seed in my greenhouse.
Used have an alotment and grew most of your usual veg but didn't have the time to do it justice....
Growing some courgettes this year.
I used to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse just to see how many trusses/Toms I could get on a plant and ended up with so many toms that I didn't know what to do with them....

Hey ShónaghMcG
It's certainly nice to have someone come back with a recording. Well done
Videoing and recording a song is a doubly difficult thing to do so good on you for giving it go..
I liked melody and the singing as much as I could hear as the recording was a bit juddery in sound and vision..
I hope your able to continue your music in the future as I can see you have great potenial.
Good luck with your exams!

Hi Ark,
Just had a listen to "Tree Of A Thousand Stars", very nice, I sensed a little Wakeman influence? I could be wrong...liked the way the drums fade in half way through then out again just before the end.
I have found "Regalo", how stupid am I? it was on Sound Click...duuhhh, any way nice relaxing track, I didnt hear any bum notes, so sounds like a keeper to me.
Phill
Thanks Phill
Always liked Rick Wakeman's stuff and most of the prog rock scene (Yep showing my age here)
so could be...
and thanks for the comment on Regalo especially the bit about no bum notes..

Re: Electirc Guitar (13 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hi crevs.1972
I believe for general family/friends playing you can't go wrong with just a plain old acoustic. If you want a bit more bite a electro acoustic is a nice way to go giving you the option of amping/effects etc if needed.
I have a strat which rarely use now as all the stuff I record I use a electro acoustic with some FX..
But it's horses for courses and what is needed guitar wise in the way of sounds..

Re: Two sides of the recording Coin... (8 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Hi Ark,
I'm being honest when I say that I struggle with the ambient side of things. I'm going to have to sit down and listen solidly for an hour or two. I had to do the same thing with Be Bop years ago, until i got where they were going. Any suggestions at to where to look for music?
Hi Alan
Thanks for listening. I realise Ambient stuff not to everyones taste. My daughter tells me it all sounds the same to her
If you would like to hear some of that genre then here's a link to Ourstage.
http://www.ourstage.com/music/channel/156-ambient
Thanks Russ
I'm glad you liked the two pieces. Just thought the multi tracked "Tree" piece was a world away from the single track "regalo" recording.

Thanks for your comments they are always appreciated.
Hope the house reorganising is going ok

Topic: Two sides of the recording Coin... (8 replies, posted in Songwriting)
Hi All
The title is a bit cryptic sorry...
2 recordings here the first is an ambient recording called "Tree of a thousand Stars" I'm pleased to say it reached 8th in the ambient channel out of 288 entries last month.
In this one I have two melody lines running together seemed to workout quite well.
Heres's the link...
http://www.ourstage.com/play/track/AVTA … sand-stars
The other recording is a simple on the fly short solo guitar recording called "el regalo"
quite simple. Chords are just D and A with a connecting melody. It made me realise that my guitar skills need an awful lot of work..
Here's the link...

If you got the time please have a listen.
As always thanks for reading/listening..
