Kinda, sorta sounds like a loose wire either on the speaker or on the jack. This could be a very sumple fix. Carry in to a music store - might get better service from a small independent than one of them large stores - and have them check it out. You could also call Dean and talk to their service tech about whats happening. If you bought it new there might even be some warranty left. Don't give up, hope.

To really get the best outta your acoustic you not only need to change out the bridge pins but you need to replace the bridge and the nut with harder materials. There are many different materials from mammoth tusk, bone, ivory or synthetic out there that will improve the sound. You just need to find out what materials will work for the sound you are looking for.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? You would not have electric guitars if it wasn't for the improvements made to acoustic' with the addition of magnetic pick-ups. Since you have only 5 to 8 minutes to highlight the electric guitar it might be worth taking a crash course in speed talking.
Anyway, check out Lloyd Loar as a starting point. From the little bit I read he lead the way in the developement of the electric guitar.

Just think about most people just wanting to be able to do what you are doing and the envy they have because they are not. Then think about what you are getting paid - if the money is not there or very small and there's no cover charge the the folks are gonna get their monies worth. If you are getting the BIG buck and the cover charge is high then you need to bring your "A" game. Another thing you can do is to kinda turn your back to the people but stand where the mic will pick up your voice - then hollar ' FREE BEER" at the bar.

If'n you are gonna do a informational speech on the electric guitar from the very beginning up until modern times then you must start with the acoustic guitar and it's transition into what was to become the electric guitar. While Les Paul and Leo Fender are excellant choice' for some information I would start with Christian Fredrick Martin and his developement of the acoustic guitar in the early 1800's. Orville Gibson came into the picture in the mid 1800's. You will probally want to check out Lloyd Loar who was an engineer for Gibson and began working with magnetic pick-ups in the 1920's. Also check out Rickenbacker who produced the 1st production electric guitar in 1932, the "Electro Spanish". Before that Rickenbacker worked on a instrument called the "Frying Pan" which was not really a guitar but had 6 strings and a magnetic pick-up. And before you get to Les Paul you just gotta go into what the early jazz and blues musicans did for the electric guitar. Anyway, some of this might help.

And to think no one has mentioned a little tune EVERYONE has played with their fingers an just about any surface available.

I have to take exception to Badeye' comment about having a beer and all will be well. Drinking a beer will in no way change the way your guitar sounds. My advice would be to drink 8 or 6 beers and then it won't make any difference how it sounds.

Upyerkilt, me thinks you got the idea for this post while standing around letting the cold wind blow up your skirt (kilt). Put some drawers on, man, before the flies start blowing.

A properly set up "Cheap" guitar is easier to play than an expensive guitar set-up poorly. Make sure that your guitar is set up for you and your style of playing. Now try this - pick a chord, any chord - lets say "D".
Form an open "D" chord on your guitar as you normally would and strum. After you have done this remove your hand from the fretboard, shake it out a few times and then reform the open "D" chord BUT place your fingers down VERY lightly. And strum. How is the sound? Does it ring clear? If it does, good, if not then increase your finger pressure slightly and strum again. How does this sound? By doing this you will begin to see just how lightly you need press down on the fretboard to form chords. Pressing down too hard with our fingertips is something all of us do. It take time and practice ot overcome this habit. Keep at it and practice, practice, practice.

If you can go to a music store with someone who can play. Get that person to play thru both types of amps while you listen a few feet away. You WILL be able to hear the difference between an acoustic guitar amp and electric guitar amp. To get the best sound from your A/E guitar it needs an amp made for acoustic guitars. Second best would be a keyboard amp (they can even be a little less pricy) or just play thru a mike and a PA system. I have a Roland AC-60 and it does a VERY good job. This amp is set up as 2 systems of 30 watts each. You can control 2 guitars, seperately, or 1 guitar and 1 mike each with 30 watts. If I had to do it all over again. I would go for the Roland AC-90 which is just a little bigger. Now is a good time to buy as there are still some 2008 models out there. Shop around for the best price, don't get in a big hurry and find out if the salesperson gets a commission on the sale. If so, find out when that period ends and then negotiate the price.

Going to one tonight. 2nd and 4th Friday night of each month. Lots of fun and a good learning experience. Will be 15 to 20 people sitting and playing and everyone gets a turn at the mike. Usually each person gets to do at least 2 songs.

So a $1.25 battery is gonna stop you from buying a acoustic electric guitar. The battery provides power for the pre-amp and tuner BUT even if the battery is low or dead the sound will STILL come thru the powered amp. I do use more batteries than Roger but I think that is my own fault. If you leave, as I sometimes do, the cable plugged in from the guitar to the amp it will drain the battery, fast. Always buy batteries, 9 volt, in packages of 3 or more and you will always have an extra. The batteries can be changed quicker that you can tune your guitar.

A good quality 1/2 to 3/4 size guitar, depending on the size of the student, will be easier to play than a full sized adult guitar. Also, nylon strings will be easier on tinder young fingers to learn the basic's on. Keep the lessons fun rather than as work. Always end the daily lesson on a positive note. My grandson, who will be 3 in Febuary has to have his guitar and will set with me and play along with me as I play. His style is to just hold the guitar and just srum away. He really thinks he has done something when we brag about his pertty music. He has already been on stage with me and his Memaw at one of our Friday night get to gathers and will sing along to I'll Fly Away. Always make it fun for the children and they will stick with the music.

Zurf, when you gots an itch you just gots to scratch it. Never mind the "where am I gonna put it" just get it and worry about everything else later. Be strong, be assertive, you want it then you get it. Never look back.
Nela
PS: It might make good sense to check on where your next few nights sleeping accomendations will be. If there are repairs needed to the dog house I believe I would do them first.
Zurf, when I said I was up to 2 packs a day when I was trying to quit smoking - it wasn't cigarette's. I was chewing 2 packs of Lee press on nails per day 'cause I did not have any of my own fingernails left.
nela
Zurf, those Lee "press on nails" really work. It took me awhile, but when I was trying hard to quit smoking they were a godsend. I got up to 2 packs a day before I quit but they worked.
I been having a whle lotta trouble with my right hand and have had 2 surguries since November. My middle and ring fingers have been affected by these surguries and don't work just like I would like them too. This affects any attempts I make to try and learn a finger pick style. Still cannot close my hand, tightly and still have some pain. Guess I'ma gonna stick with playing rythem guitar and bi-pass the fingerpicking for a little longer.

Get a Tak. G - series. Check out the "flamed" maple sides and back, solid spruce front. Go electric - in the $500.00 price range and the sound will compete with most anything out there.

Deadstring, just read your post that said you were almost in Arkansas. I'm sorry.

Got a buddy who has 1 and I have been wanting 1 for myself. Seems to be a very useful tool. The reason I want 1 is so I can change the key of the song into a key my wife is comfortable in singing. Since I travel with my work i usually am alone while doing my guitar practice. I will take a song, listen thru my cd player and learn the song in the key it is recorded in. It kinda gets rough for me to learn a song in "D" then try to listen to the same song while playing it in "G". Although I have found out that if I use my headphones, turn the volume up on the cd player, turn the volume down on my guitar I can kinda drown out the sound from the guitar but I can still play alone with the song for timing. I know this is wrong, BUT...........................
Nela
Zurf, guess I'm kinda lost. Are you asking is it "in your face" or is it "up your kilt?
nela
What Zurf said. The chords C, D, E, G, and A are the most popular open chords and should be the 1st chords you learn. Along with these open chords you will need to learn the F chord, which can be difficult. With the open chords of G and E learn to make them with your middle, ring and pinky fingers as this will help you later on with barre chords and other movements between chords. Learn the 7th chords, A7, B7, C7, D7, E7 and G7. Learn the minor chords of Em, Am, Dm. With the exception of the F chord, all these chords are easy and once learned there are THOUSANDS of songs you can play. Learn your scales. Learn the chord progressions. 1st, 4th and 5th chords are Major (the 5th chord can be played as a 7th chord) , 2nd, 3rd and 6th are minor chords and the 7th is a diminished chord. Learn how to transpose from one key to another key. Set aside 30 minutes a day for practice AND STICK TO IT!

I second wut RG said. Best is a "relative term. The best is what you can afford, what you enjoy playing, has the sound you want and if it's paid for - so much the better.

Find out if your shipper has insurance and what the cost is to insure the guitar during shipment. Never hurtz to have some coverage.
