Alright then... so lets assume that I'm looking at Time by Pink Floyd.

F#m, A and E make up the first part of the verse...
and then Dmaj7, Amaj7, C#maj7 and Bm7 round out the lighter half.

How do I go about figuring out which key this is in?  I'm also not sure if this would be a key change in between the two parts.  I ask because while Dave is a guitarist to aspire towards, I'm still a ways off.  I just want to be able to play a fair sounding solo, if I have someone else playing the rythm behind it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello smellie_hippie,
In this particular song(Time by Pink Floyd) you're gonna want to play in first part in the key of F#m(or A major). The second part, ;  (solo in Bm, or D major)

Dmaj7    Amaj7 (x2)
Dmaj7    C#m   Bm7    E     E/F(122100)
back into;
F#m  A   E (And you run and you run.........) (solo in F#m or A major)

the sweet little turnaround(lighter half as you call it) you switch to soloing in  Bm(or D major). I made a few  slight corrections  to your progression.(Dmaj7>Amaj7 one additional time , C#m instead of C#maj7, the added E and E/F chord at the end of the turnaround) Even Gilmour variates his soloing slightly in his live performances so if you're playing in the proper key as the song evolves, I think it'll sound pretty cool to your ears............Best of luck, hope this was helpful to you.

Not to mention the man was responsible for the greatest salad dressing in the history of all salad dressings.(seriously!) And the coolest scene in all of film history when he ate 60 hard boiled eggs in 1 hour. What's the name of this film?(was it 'Cool Hand Luke'?) He was in prison on an island somewhere......Paul Newman was one cool dude and a fine man as well.

I played out this past Friday, and contracted for $75 an hour.   I only took $50 an hour since I didn't draw as well as I'd hoped and want to be invited back when there isn't a presidential debate or pre-playoff baseball to compete with!!!!!!

I was wondering what other people seek to charge when they are pitching a new venue.  I'm open to any feedback.  I am a solo artist, mix of cover and originals, good crowd engager (when there is a crowd!).  I welcome any comments or experiences.

This should be a private matter. One never knows which web-site(s) others may happen upon. I've been playing professionally for 25 years and i can tell you this; no good whatsoever comes from revealing the amount of money one gets/asks for. You are wise in being flexible with your price demands because the goal for a musician is to get repeat business. However, revealing the amount of money one receives as an entertainer is a no win situation. Entertainers can, and often make 5X(or more depending on tips) as much as most people that work at any said venue/restaurant/bar and they work 1/2 or less the hours than most of the other staff . My personal advice to you, tomd, is find a price that you feel comfortable with, and also doesn't dig too deeply into the pockets of the establishment that hires you, and go with that...

It's gotta be the singer/lead guitarist!!!It worked for this musician.... My wife is WAY outta my league from a physical standpoint, seriously....

This kinda brings to mind the old saying, " give a man a plate of  fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." I don't mind helping someone when they're down and out but handouts only go so far..........

I've worked out a Teddy Thompson song- "In My Arms" by listening to and watching the acoustic version. During the solo, he uses a chord which I've recently worked out to be Ebmaug5, which seems like a pain in the backside to play, or get anywhere from. Does anybody really use this chord?

Here are some choices to play the mystery chord. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years, have studied extensively classical guitar and jazz guitar, and i've never once encountered this chord. It's probably a  basic, dimished, split chord of some sort but without knowing the specific song from which this mystery chord is derived here are some possible ways to play this booger of a chord;

Yes this song is in the key of G major and its' relative minor of E minor. However, the first chord of a song doesn't always indicate that the song  is in that particular chord. It is the progression of  chords that determine the 'key' that the song is in...........

Core         Minor
G                Em
A                F#m
B                 G#m
C                Am
D                 Bm
E                 C#m
F                  Dm

Good stuff! Great chops and the maturity of a person way beyond his 16 years. We'll be hearing many great things from this young man, in my opinion..... Thanks for sending this clip Altex.

Well, tonight I played until I worked up a sweat....whew! I switched between several exercises.  I tried to get Little Wing to sound as good as possible, played all the way through Cliffs of Dover veeeerrrrry slowly-while making sure to alternate pick when needed.  I spent a good amount of time on tapping, and I timed myself while I tapped out a series of 3 notes for 2 minutes (not much, but man, was my hand hurting!).  I also spent some time playing through a neo-classical style scale while making sure to alternate pick each note.  Wow, that was just my actual "practice" for the night.  Other time was spent just jamming on power chords , riffs, and working on my SRV blues-style licks (ie Texas Flood intro and Honey Bee intro).  I'd say an evening well-spent! This probably is not much compared to what you veterans out there do lol...hopefully stuff like this will eventually pay off....

Sounds like a nice, well rounded, diverse, practice session. You sound stoked(happy) about your progress and routine. That's what it's all about, gettin' better and feelin' good about it. Well done 06sc500! Keep up the good work. This could be the start of a new thread;

         I'll stick with doin' it the old fashioned way;play live gigs, do as good as you can, hope that lots of people will talk about you and get more people to come out and hear  you play. It's pretty much all the same to me personally, I'm gonna be playin' my guitar at home or at some dive bar, restaurant, festival, or whatever. Anything else that comes along is only an added bonus. Play music for the love of music, and/or payin' the mortgage, student loans, pre-paid college funds, vehicles,new guitars, etc........ I think the really important thing about getting an article in Wikipedia is that it should not come out as "yet another web site"... And it should in no way appear as advertising/promoting anything.

I am however not sure how to do this. Maybe another strategy could be just to submit a so called "stub". One or two lines. And then later expand it..

Nice attempts Russell, your efforts are applauded. It might be time to redirect and go in with a new strategy.

I love the intro he did on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'. The man was a fantastic keyboard player. He made Gilmours' amazing playing sound even better. Richard Wright put the spacey, psychedellic elements into Pink Floyd's sound. Another favourite Floyd song of mine is 'One of These Days, I'm Going To Cut You Into Little Pieces.' I used to play in a band years ago that covered this song. Richard Wright was one of my main teachers on keyboard( listening and learning, not private lessons! I wish!)

On my acoustic guitars I use 2 different types;

1) When playing my acoustic/electric with an active pick-up I use D'Addario Nickle Jazz strings(.12-.52). The pick-up and electronics have more relevance on the sound and tone. Therefore I like the nickle strings mainly because they do not lose sound quality as the life of the string takes it course. The sound almost exactly the same when I first put them as they do just before they break/ or need to be replaced.

2) When playing my acoustics that require a mic in front of the guitar, I use Elixir Polywebs 80/20 bronze custom lights (.11-.52) There is a noticable difference with these strings vs nickle, bronze, or phosphur bronze strings. The life of these strings too are far greater than most other strings I've used through the years. They are well worth the extra money...........

Wacko' Jacko'??? Well, well, well,  lets start buy stating that the guy/gal/um.. whatever...,  has not been convicted of a crime in a court of law and every statement made in this post is my opinion and my opinion only and does not represent the views of Chordie.com nor anyone associated with this wonderful site..CMA:>/

           This whole 'not guilty until proven innocent in a court of law' should be changed to 'not guilty until accused can come up with enough money to make the wrongs done a little more tolerable'. The whole judicial system in the U.S.A.  is laughable. There is no equality.  The only true justice is karma, karma in it's pursest sense . Michael Jackson used to be the 'cream of the crop' in the music industry, nowadays he is at best, the  butt of every lame/or non-lame  comedians' joke(s). This gross act of of injustice still doesn't, nor will it ever repair the 'alledged', horrific crimes he is accused of, but at least, hopefully, Wacko Jacko will never go one one day without being held accountable, if nothing less than the nightmares in his own mind, of living one day in this physical life in peace.

Daddycool,
You're a gifted lyricist and I'm sure your songs are more than worthy of notice and great acclaim from others outside of our Chordie circle. It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Just keep writing your wonderful songs and get out what's within. Self expression and pleasing yourself with your songs is the most important thing, in my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing your gift with all of us here at Chordie.

Peace and Guitars,

ps-don't sell yourself short, there are lots of successful musicians out there who have 'made it' that certainly don't  have the 'golden tongue'. And remeber that the performer is always their worst critic. Keep on keepin' on.........

Uh-oh.  I suppose you prefer Ginger, too.

Well, I was playing trumpet back when the Brady Bunch was on, so I guess I wasn't a bass player then.

Something that I hate is getting some little tiny thing stuck in your sock.  No matter how hard you try, you can't find what keeps poking you in the foot when you walk.  You can't find it, but it's still there poking you with every step.  Grrrrr.  I hate that.

And Canadian nickles that I can't use in a vending machine in the US.  I'm sure in Canada they're right handy, but in the US the Canadian nickles aren't helpful.  Always seems to be nickles.  Never dimes or quarters.  I think maybe the Canadians have something against Jefferson.  How about one of the Canadians fessing up and letting me in on the secret.  Why do you sneak your nickles into my pocket?

OH! And ornery squirrels.  I think they're planning a takeover.  They make me nervous.
