In 1587 on Roanoke Island North Carolina over 100 people vanished within the 3 years it took for the others to return to their homeland for additional supplies... They were among the first settlers of America and their disappearance has always baffled scholars. The word "Croatoan" was the only clue found as it was carved into a nearby tree... http://www.coastalguide.com/packet/lost … atan.shtml

"CROATOAN"

They just vanished wink

Hopefully all will be back to normal soon. I made the mistake of clearing my history earlier and it took me several tries through back doors to get back on the forums. Luckily, I had a link to a discussion here posted on another forum that let me in...

I actually had an Epi SG Special in last week for a set up. This was the basic model that a friend bought for about $175. Overall I was very impressed with it for the $$. There were some sharp fret ends and I had to level a few others and adjust the pickups and such but after all was said and done it played and sounded really good.

I've heard these stories on several forums but have to say that I've used elixer Nano PB's for the last 2 years on several guitars (many packs of elixers) and have never broken a string... Not even the G... And yea I bend the heck out of them sometimes and hit them with a pretty hard attack during lead runs.

Where are yours breaking at?

This reminds me of a funny story that happened the other day smile

My mother and father in-law just bought a new car and she was supposed to follow him in the old truck to their other daughters house. Well all is going fine and she is following him and then all of a sudden he turns off and starts hitting back streets. He's rushing to the next road and turning off like he is trying to shake her. She figures it's a game and gives chase!! She proceeds to chase him all over town for about 30 minutes. Finally a few cops intervene and pulls her over....  Turns out, at some point she got the cars confused and was following the wrong car smile The little old lady that she had been chasing all over town was scared witless and had called the cops on the car that was trying to run her down lol Yep that's where my wife gets it wink She was probably chasing some other guy when she found me smile

I found it only 30 minutes before posting... Came across it on youtube and came to chordie looking for chords and decided to throw a link up for the OP. I've played threw it a few times tonight... Give me 2-3 days to really get the feel & timing down and I'll throw together a vid for a fairly easy version. -Pix

Here's one I'm currently working on...   Bright Eyes "First Day of my Life" http://www.imeem.com/artists/bright_eye … m-version/   Maybe you can access that one from your local... Here's the chords http://www.yourchords.com/7007/Bright-E … fe-Chords/  They play it picked pretty fast but you could simplify it to a strumming pattern and slow it down a little pretty easily...

For those that can see youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5rhhQby … annel_page I really liked this vid smile

Can anyone recommend some free dvd burning software?? There're loads of them on the net but I hate to just pick one and download without asking around a bit first smile  My PC came with the burner but no software and I have hundreds of videos of lessons and performances downloaded that I would love to burn to dvd so I don't always have to sit in front of the computer to practice with them... Any recommendations would be appreciated! -Pix

Hey Zurf, I'd go condenser for vocals as well...(for recording)

About the seagull... I'm a huge fan of Godin guitars ( seagull, simon and patrick, art and lutherie, norman) so I don't mean this bad toward the brand but, be sure to site down the neck and look for a hump around the 14th fret where the fretboard layes over the body. They seem to be prone to this, as I've seen it on several of their guitars. I've owned 7 or 8 godins (2 seagulls, 1 S6 and 1 artist studio rosewood) and they have all been fantastic guitars. Just something I always like to check for in that brand before purchase....

I've installed K&K pickups in 2 of my acoustics and a shadow pickup in another and all have been very simple installs with really good results. Most come with fairly good instructions but if not, a quick web search will often bring up a step by step guide with pictures for most popular brands. I use these for playing with others or in a gigging situation.... I've found it much easier than trying to mic in a live setting. Especially if it's a noisy area...

I always mic my acoustic when recording though. I use a Rode NT1A condenser mic placed around the 12th fret about 5-6 inches in front of the guitar. If I want a deeper or fuller sound, I'll record one track at approx the 12th fret and one between the 13th & 14th with the mic a little further back and then blend the two tracks into one. IMO, Condenser mics are the way to go. They record much better than dynamic mics at that frequency range..

I believe the song is in standard tuning and what you found were the chords... It's played C and then C/E and then F  x2 And then Am C F x2  This may help http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/k/k … r6_crd.htm

It'll sound slightly off if you play it with open chords...  Barring them will give you the proper timbre

good evening all. i am working on switching from strictly finger playing to using a pick, any advice on this transition would be greatly appreciated. lead work is not a problem; however my strumming sounds very rough even with a light pick. Thanks.

Welcome to chordie!!
You'll get a much better response if you start your own thread for this in the Acoustic Section... (I'm assuming you're playing acoustic with the mention of fingerstyle...)
Throwing a question in a unrelated thread will seldom get you the responses you deserve or want. I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome and plenty of advice once you post it in the proper place smile  All the best! -Pix

Glad you liked it!  Not sure it's right but this is how I play it...

Am (532353)  C (532353)  G (632363)  D (432343)    The numbers are the strings and that's the pattern I use ,or at least I think it's the pattern I use wink It's hard to slow them down and count strings.  It doesn't match any that I have found and ,admittedly, I don't have the best ear but it sounds fairly close.... Let me know what you work out smile

I can't believe I almost forgot Stonewall Jackson!!  His home place is only 6 miles from me. My grandfather "Corby" taught him to play... Rumor has it I used to sit on the porch as a babe and listen to them jamming, though I was too young to really remember. Bit's and pieces float up every once in a while when I hear some of his songs..

Browsing through Yahoo music and came across this blog about my home state and songs that are related to it. Thought maybe Tops, Cam, and the few other North Carolinians on chordie might find it interesting. http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/yradis … -carolina/

Any songs you guys could add to the list?

The only one off the top of my head is "Steal my Kisses " by Ben Harper but I'm sure he talks about the state in at least one other song...

Oh Yea "Carolina Girls" is another one

Not sure what the problem is... I've had it happen once or twice myself. It would do fine one day and the next, hardly nothing.   Why use the Korg though? The tuner built in the Zoom A2.1u is more accurate and easier to use IMO.

I'd say the answer is in your sig smile   I'd go Godin... Maybe a used ceder or spruce 6 by S&P, Art & Lutherie, or a good used Seagull S6. The 24.5 inch scale of these guitars are real beginner friendly and they have an outstanding tone for the money. It would be something he wouldn't have to upgrade for a long time. With them being shorter scale they have less string tension and are less prone to have "bellies" or bad necks making them a safer bet when buying used.  As you can tell, I recommend buying used smile You get more guitar for the money and the better you get the easier it will be to play and the better it will sound making you want to play it more often and progress. -Pix

Well my oldest son (11) is starting music this year in school and he's decided on playing upright bass. So now I'm shopping around for a good 1/2 size bass. It's his first venture with it (though he does play acoustic guitar and piano some) so I don't want to put too much in it. However, if he doesn't use it, I'm sure I'll get plenty of play out of it smile so I don't want to go too cheap either. Anyone know of some good brands to look at in the say $600-$800 range? Do I need to go a little higher for a good one or are they okay in this range? Thanks for any input you can offer! -Pix

Congrats! I have a friend on youtube that bought one last year and he really loves it. It sure has a nice sound in the vids he's posted with it. I have a 1974 Epiphone FT570SB Sheraton It's a jumbo also and a fine guitar that has held up wonderfully. -Pix
