I am learning a few new songs and I have a question about how to read certain chords.  Here are some examples.

Gmaj7/E
Bm/D
G/F#

Thanks in advance.

Pete

Hi Pete,
I'll attempt to break this down in its' simplest form.

This is an intermediate level post on "SPLIT CHORDS".

ex.; Gmaj7/E  the Gmaj7 would be played by the right hand on a piano,           the E would be played by the left hand. Transposing this to guitar would be played as such; 0X4430 or 054430

ex.; Bm/D the Bm would be played by the right hand on a piano, and the D would be played the left hand. Transposing this to guitar would be played as such; XX0432 or 750707

ex.;G/F# same premise as previous two split chords

Alan,
I feel left out, I never received a call!

Wilcovecrue,
When I had long hair, I could play Satriani, Vai, Segovia, etc., note for note and even added improved elements to their music. Then I  went to barber shop , got a haircut, and my playing abilities drastically decreased. I could barely play a G chord afterwards. I guess it really is about the "look" and the "image". Practicing and live performance has absolutely nothing to do with ones' prowess on ones' instrument, it's all about long, wavy, hair and flashy clothes. Oh yeah, the joss sticks are a must too in playing quality music..................(ahem)

Just do  for yourself not others, what you feel is right within your inner self and your soul. Don't spend too much time imposing your will and level of faith commitment upon others, you'll just waste your time and give yourself a hernia. Feeding someones' mind when ones' mind is not hungry is only going to lead to fierce rejection. People are gonna believe what's imbeeded within their personna and others trying to sway them to think and/or feel differently only strengthens their beliefs/opinions. The world is full of independent thinkers and you're gonna have to live with this cold, hard fact.................

melon,
Glad you liked and found the link useful. Welcome to Chordie. Are you a resident of the old 'Sandwich Islands'?(Hawaii) I bought my 3yr old an inexpensive uke as toy for him and I ended up really diggin' the thing. It's  a different beast from guitar, but similar enough for me to figure it out, somewhat. Anyways, stop by anytime and share your musical goodies.

I think the person you're referring to is Django Reinhardt. He was badly burned and had to totally redesign the way he approached and played guitar. He is a huge inspriration to me personally, his determination and his musical genius are as good as it gets..............

Hi Pete and welcome to Chordie. I'm guessing the 'Let's Dance' you seek is from Bowie? If so here it is, if not I, tried. Enjoy and thanks for stopping by.

E-mail Re: Help on editing Bob DylanChopro is fairly easy. Here is a quick course:
Lesson 1 - All chords go in brackets. Like this [C7]. No point in putting them above the text...
Lesson 2 - There are a few other commands. Do not mind the top tags for artist and songname - you cant change them. The most important tag is {soc} and {eoc}. It means "start of chorus" and "end of chorus". The other is for writing comments in the text. You do it this way: {c: comment text goes here}.

In lesson 3 you would have learned that there is a few other commands and that you can view them by clicking "show help". However you will most likely never need this.

The real job when editing songs is to place chords originally above the line, into the text in brackets. You really do not need any musical skills or technical skills for doing this, but it does take some time. Another job is to delete unnecessary info/headers, and separate comments from lyrics.

The beauty of it is that chopro is an "intelligent" format. When chords are separated this way, Chordie can automatically transpose, make chord grids etc.

And... I agree dylanchords.info is one of the best sites on the Internet. Brilliant quality on the transcriptions. However the songs are not in chopro-format (ie cant be transposed and with lyrics and comments intermingled), so there is some manual editing here. The Chordie automatic formater did fail on this site, and I did not want to present this high quality work in a less than perfect way. So it is today no longer indexed automatically. However it is great if people add songs manually from this site.

Hi Vanheusen,
Welcome to Chordie.
The numbers represent the fret you play on the specific string the numbers are placed. And the *'s indicate a start and finish to a particular stanza(part) of a song. If there are 'stacked' numbers such as;
                                                                                   e----2------
                                                                                   b----3-----
                                                                                   g----2------
                                                                                   d----0------
                                                                                   a----X--
                                                                                   E----X---
you play this as a D chord. If the numbers are spaced out such as;

              e-----------------------------------0--2--3---0  (skinny string)
              b----------------------------0---3------------0
              g-----------------------0--2------------------0
              d--------------0--1--2------------------------2
              a---------0--2---------------------------------2
              E----0--3--------------------------------------0(fat string)

you play the progression(left to right) and finsh with an Em chord at the end.
Good luck, hope this gets you started.

Thanks for the song ideas to all. I like you Zurf was trying to learn too much at once. Now I take a song at a time and really don't strive for perfection. B7 is a fine chord for me as I too use it for B. For me the guitar is pure fun and our kitchen jams are a blast. One tonite for
my buddy's 45 birthday, could be a rough sunday, he he.

Take Care .. Badeye cool

Hello Badeye,
How about Neil Youngs' 'Heart of Gold' for you buddys' birthday tonight. "And I'm gettin' old" always hits the soul in a humorous way on ones' birthday. Have a great jam session tonight and don't forget the 'crash helmets'...(haha)

Hi everybody.
I've been playing ukulele for a few months. I'm really enjoying it, but i'm having problems with some chords. Is it with ukulele as with other guitars, you buy one that "fits" your hand? I have a cheap sopran ukulele and i have really big hands (for a girl) so i'm wondering if i should have an ukulele with a bit wider neck or something?

Hello idaida and welcome to Chordie. Comfort is the ultimate factor in deciding on which size uke you wish to play and excel on. Pretty generic advice but it's true. Here's a helpful uke site that caters to all ukes and various tunings. Good luck.

This is a no brainer; the most important part of a song is the complete totality of a song:::::: intro, togetherness, lyrics, instrumentational cohesiveness, arrangement, harmony vocals,  good clean mix,  grand finale,etc...... All of these elements come into play... in other words the most important part of a song is clearly subjective to the person listening and forming an opinion on said song. There is no right or wrong answer to this question.

I used to play anything, but had to have 4 inches cut off my ulna and then have it fused. (my palm faces down unless I pull my elbow in hard to my side...)  Now the only way I can play is to hold my guitar like a cello.  I can't do barre chords anymore but I don't want to give up everything I used to play.   Can anyone help?  I think if I can find alternates for the barre chords I may be capable of more...help!  sad

Laurie,
I can honestly empathize with you and your current situation. You are in for a very challenging time but you'll be amazed what you can do if you want something badly enough. Best of luck to you. Here's an article my hometown newspaper did on me back in May of this year.

Hello, Ive been teaching myself acoustic for about 7months, have mastered the basics, but I can't play B. I don't understand how you hold that many strings down with four fingers.lol. Any advice?

It will come to you in time. The key is strengthening the muscles and training the mind to bust out any chord, with minimal effort. Here are a few options for playing a B chord;
X(do not play low E string)
2nd fret on A string(pointer)
4th fret on D string(middle)
4th fret on G string(ring finger)
B string (play open)
X (try not play high E string).................(X2440X)

7th fret on low E string(pointer finger)
9th fret on A string (ring finger)
9th fret on D string (pinky finger)
8th fret on G string( middle finger)
B string (play open)
X(try not to play high E string).....................(79980X)
