Thanks again for all the feedback guys!   Wayne you got a real steal!! And you were talking about me being able to sleep at night over some strings smile How do you live with yourself wink I think you'd feel better if you passed that deal on to someone else and since your such a stand-up guy I'd be glad to help you out with it lol

Thanks Wayne! I'll definitely give them a look. Are the neck profiles and fretboard radius's the same as a strat also. Playability is as important as tone to me. As long as the fretboard isn't as flat as say a Gretsch or Martin I can probably adapt to it though... I appreciate your input! -Pix

Well I parted with my electric and am now looking for a replacement... I'm going for that classic surf tone smile So what do you think Strat or Jaguar? Any opinions? I know the strat is a very versatile guitar... I definitely prefer the looks of the Jag but with guitars it's all about the tone and I'm not sure how it would mix with other styles of music... Also anyone care to recommend a really good reverb pedal. I've been considering the Boss RV-5 http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod … sku=151303 anyone have experience/feedback on them. Thanks guys & gals smile

Well, I made a little road trip today and traded my Ibanez Semi-Hollow AS83VLS electric for a set of LP Siam Oak Bongos and Congas with stands. I've had a ball banging away all day smile The kids are throughly enjoying them as well but I think the wife is a little less enthusiastic wink  Here's a quick pic of the set... (please excuse the mess, I'm in the process of rearranging the studio...)

The previous owner and I had been discussing the trade online (we met via craigslist) for the last week or so. Today I finally went and met him. We got to talking and it turned out that he and his friend were fellow Chordians though they hadn't visited the forums yet. Thought that was cool and I invited them to stop in and say hi to everyone.

Anyway, I've been checking out some lessons on youtube and found some good material on LPs web site as well... I was just wondering if anyone here played and could ,possibly, recommend some real good sites to check out? Thanks! Peace -Pix

Hey Wayne, Yea I won't be throwing them away smile  Absolutely no offense meant to anyone by "cowboy chords" it's just a difference in playing style.. If I played open more, I would have heavier callouses and probably not as much noise when I slide.   Maybe these will toughen my finger tips a little and the problem will subside smile I've been spoiled the last couple of years by the soft feel and smoothness of the elixirs wink

I use Nano PB (phospher bronze) light or medium/lights usually.... I have one guit that prefers the 80/20's though.

Well I got the EXP's in yesterday and put a set on my antique cedar topped Yairi. I don't hear a big difference in tone but I do hear a small increase in overtones or harmonics which I like because I use this guitar mainly for fingerstyle play. However, I don't care much for the playability of the strings... The are a stiffer string (takes more tension to tune to pitch) ,which probably causes the increase in overtones, but they don't fret or bend (vibrato) as well as the elixirs of comparable gauges. They are also a fairly noisy string... I get a lot of finger squeak when sliding up and down the fretboard. Not as much as some uncoated strings but easily twice as much noise as I get from elixirs. I'd probably prefer the EXP's if I played more "cowboy chords" (open position chords) but I very seldom play them with my style of play. I play almost wholly in barre with a lot of little lead runs and ,for my style, I will probably be going back to elixirs once these are gone... Over all, A great string with excellent tone but too noisy for me.. YMMV -Pix

Part 1 has been repaired... (I think) If not I'll take care of it this afternoon. I just uploaded it and it's still processing so I can't check for sure..

Hey Norm, I've considered the jp rest but haven't tried one yet.  Though I know some fingerstylist that swear by them...  They also make a similar product for the back to keep it away from the body and allow more resonance.

Mekidsmom, I'll get those links to you this evening when I get home from work.

Yea Wayne, That's a good preview of a soundport. However, The electronics hole is (usually) squared and for proper porting it is recommended to use curved ports for best results. Also the size of the port in relation to body size is important and most electronic boxes have larger holes than what would be recommended for a sound port. So you get an idea with them removed but it's not real accurate comparison to a properly installed port. I'm not sure how much of a difference you would hear between the 2. Just repeating what I read up on... I'd thing too large a hole would have a pretty adverse affect though... You'd loose too much air pressure and tone and projection would suffer.

All your recordings I've heard have sounded superb!

The reason I have been doing alot of recording, I like to hear my guitar from a listener's perspective. It seems the guitar always sounds different when your out in front of the soundhole, and it's hard to be there when your playing it.

If you have an older "beater" I'd highly recommend you try a soundport on one and see how you like it. It will give you the listeners perspective all the time smile I'm a die hard believer in them and all my acoustics either have them or are scheduled to get them once I decide on a design. Everyone that has tried mine has asked why all guitars don't have them and I've installed several for others already. As with all newer projects, It's intimidating at first ,cutting a hole in your guitar, but the benefits far outweigh the risks IMO. -Pix

You're right geo, The exps are definitely a bit cheaper! I got 17 sets coming to me for $75 bucks!  Nano light pbs have been my choice string. I move all over the neck and love the quietness of the Nanos during slides and such. Hopefully the EXPs will have close to the same feel. I haven't noticed a drop in longevity with them though, I still get 2-3 months from a set of Nanos and I play 3-4 hours everyday & more on weekends. -Pix

Well I see they pulled part 1 but part 2 is still available... I'll see if I can get part 1 back up here tonight for those that missed it. Part 3 should still be coming soon.

Mekidsmom, I have a ton of bookmarks saved on tonewoods and such, If you want I'll email you a few good links that you may find interesting. -Pix

Thanks Wayne!
How about longevity? Did they last about the same?
I agree with Martins not liking elixirs. I tried them on my D18 and quickly went back to SP mediums.

Just wondering who has played both and what your opinions are.....
I've been using elixirs for the last 18 months or so but just bought a bulk set of EXPs to try out. Hopefully they'll work well as I've got 17 packs on the way smile I'll offer up my views when they get here Tuesday.

Glad you guys enjoyed the vids! Ervin is a real master when it comes to lutherie! I could listen to him for hours on end. If any of you are interested Here's a link where you can download a few of his workshops. http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/vi … nor.net.au  Just click the play icon and it will download. You can't see the blackboard well in these but he covers some really interesting subjects like radiusing (compound curved) tops, voicing, etc...

These are some really great videos by Ervin Somogyi covering some tone woods, tap testing, bracing, and the specifics on how your guitar produces sound... There are 3 parts but thus far only 2 have been uploaded. I'll add the 3rd as soon as it's available. Please take the time to watch and if your able, watch in HD. It helps you hear it much better.

Hmmm... That's a tough one to find. I did a search or 2 and couldn't find anything. Not even a cover or live version... I did give the song a listen though. I don't have my guit to strum along but it sounds to me like he's staying mainly in D with a quick change to C then G and then back to D again.  Maybe someone else can offer more... Or correct me if I'm wrong smile

Welcome to the forums!!

That used to be me...electricians side cutters no less!!!! Pushing up from underneath is great advice. I've had to do it in the past with broken pins but why not all the time????

Another cool thing I bought is the Ernie Ball Electric String Winder...Looks like a little drill. I know seems lazy and lame but it's pretty cool. Admittedly, I do love the gadgets.

The winders are cool and save a lot of time but they make me nervous... I've seen too many guitars with scratches and dings on the side of the headstock from manual and electric winders. Admittedly it was likely due to careless use but I still prefer the good old fingers. Takes more time but I don't have any worries that way smile

I always hated pulling out the bridge pins. My little bit of advice is buy a good, expensive bridge pin puller, Makes a world of difference

I like to release all the tension from the strings so I can reach in the soundhole and push them up from the bottom... That way there's no worries about marking the bridge or pins. A good puller does make a difference though... I hate seeing people do this with a pair of pliers...Cringe

Just added "Dela" by The beautiful girls... http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 55114.html (video at bottom of tab)   Several more due this weekend so I figured I'd resurrect the thread.

I don't refer to strings by number.  I call them out by note.

"Fret the D string on the 3rd fret...."

I think it's a better way to learn music.

I agree

I always call them by note as well. I almost always name the note played also. So I say play an F by fretting the D string on the third fret. Helps keep it all fresh in my memory and I need all the help I can get smile

If you know what songs you want to play but can't find vids for them.... Why not just post here for help with them. I'm sure someone will know it and be willing to help or may have a link to vid online that you haven't found.. You may even get a vid made just for you. Note for note isn't really a problem just specify what your wanting... Most of the time when people ask for easy songs we/I just assume that they want easier arrangements of the songs. Cause we often hear "Where can I find an easy version of -------"
Give us some bands/artist/songs that you like and maybe we can help you find something to your liking. -Pix

Most radio stations keep a playlist from the last 3-4 hrs on their website... If you here it on the radio, just check their site for recently played songs and you should be able to find it. -Pix

The only thing that comes to mind is Boston "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMhxGqLJkwI   Maybe not it though.... What genre of music is it?

Welcome to Chordie! -Pix
