A power chord is conceived of and intended to be a triad with the "third" note omitted (thus it is neither major nor minor). In addition, such chords are usually played with octave doubling, so they actually do have three (or four) notes, although in music theory they are considered "equivalent". (However they do change the sound.)

How do you play this chord?

On a piano, the Ab is the right hand and the Eb is the left hand.
  On the guitar there are several ways to play the booger of a chord. Here are a few;
                 1) tune guitar a half-step down and play (002220)
                 2)XX114X
                 3)as Stonebridge stated(466744)

The Eb is a note within the structure of Ab so simply playing the Ab is the easiest and most practical route. If a bass player is playing with you, they'd play the Eb, you'd play the Ab, and harmonious bliss would then occur..........

Awesome Guitarpix!!!! An A+ for the first 3 tunes, the fourth one is too fast for my slow, chilled vocal style( I'm not good with sap[singing & rap]). Thanks so much my friend of tunage!, I really dig the Mason Jennings and Vinyl Fever is right across the bridge from my crib. Mucho appreciation..

Welcome Micky to Chordie, Hang in there, I too just started 2  years ago at 47. It gets better with time. Learning scales have really helped me play better. Lots of resources here to learn.

A fellow Chordian [Southpaw 41] gave me this link,      Guitar Scales @ Chord Book.com          and is very helpful.

Hi Micky and welcome to chordie. I teach the ocassional guitar lesson and my best students are the 'older' ones. It's never too late to train 'yer brain and the 'older' students tend to have more drive and better focus on the task at hand. Here are the links badeye referred to;

My wife is up in Baltimore training for her new job, my son is in Virginia with his Grand Ma Ducky, and I'm sharing the house with Taylor(our Golden Retriever) for the next 2 weeks. Luckily, I'm picking my daughter up from her Mom's(my ex) house this weekend. My goal is to learn, and have ready to perform when my wife comes home,  25 new(to me) songs. Last night, I learned, re-arranged, and wrote out 2 ( Beginings by Chicago and Heart of the Night by Poco). 23 to go, I'm open to your suggestions............

I hear you Bommer, every week nite at 10;15 pm a car goes by my house and you can hear the Taka-Boom Taka-Boom for at leats five minutes. I know the driver is gonna need a hearing aid if he keeps this loud racket up. I really don't know how anyone can enjoy that loud noise. I agree that "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" but  that is just loud noise. Anyway enough ranting. Have a great day.

I think this calls for the Crash Helmut Jug Band boys to hide behind the bushes with a couple cartons of eggs ready to plaster ole Taka-Boom-Boom boys' car the next time he comes-a-bumpin'!!!

Not sure what we're gonna do yet for crimbo(I like that term) we call it crizzy in our house. Our son just turned 3 yesterday and got his very own, red, squire, mini-strat with a Jimi Hendrix strap! He loves it and it fits him perfectly. A few months ago we were watching music videos on VH1Classic( no cartoons in our house!?!?) and a  recent live Who video came on w/ Pete playing a red strat. My son went nuts and asked over and over again if  I'd take some of my tip jar money and buy it for him.(haha) How could I refuse?............

Yeah Jerry that's what i was thinking of as well. Merle Haggard's "Moma Cried" came to mind. As did David Allan Coe, the infamous, and controversal outlaw.

If you look into 4 string, or D shaped barre chords, the B string is used as a perfect 5th interval.
Example; E chord XX2454
                 F chord XX3565
                 G chordXX5787
                  A chordXX7 9 10 9
                     etc.............
In  this case the b string will work but try to play A Bm C#m D progression without changing the shape of  the A form barre chord and you'll see(or hopefully hear, I know how some  bass players are?!?!) what I'm trying to convey. If you were sitting in front of me ,face to face, you'd see in 2 seconds what I'm talkin' about........

A "Power chord" is really just an interval of a perfect 5th.  You can take that shape anywhere down the neck, or across it to the B string, and you're playing a "power chord."

Uhm nope ...........

2 problems here.

1) it's up the neck, not down the neck ( going from fret 3 to fret 9 is an upward ascent, going from fret 9 to fret 3 is a descent)

2) playing the b string on an A shaped barre chord will work sometimes but not if a minor chord is involved in the progression. Now maybe you're confusing the A shaped barre chord progression with the suspended second position, (ie X02200, x13311,X24422, etc..). In this example (using the sus2nd's the b string theory will work, but only with this ,( granted no minor chords are in the progression)................

The E barre would be up one fret to the 7th(not 6th, 6th fret is D#/Eb) fret in a D form barre.

And to answer your question regarding minor chords in barre chord shapes as long as the differentiating string is not played( example; Bm X24432 and B X24442/ the differentiating string is the G string , 3rd fret on the Bm 4th fret on the B major) the first 2(A shape), or 3(E shape)(from your chin to your knee) strings of the "power chord" will work with a major and/or a minor chord progression.

A shape barre chord; X02XXX or X022XX, x24XXX or X244XX, etc...
E shape barre chord; 02XXXX  or 022XXX, 24XXXX or 244XXX, etc...

Far, deep into the mountains(Blue Ridge, Big Walker, Little Walker, Drapers', Cloyds') of Southwest Virginia, away from all people minus my immediate family. I am a people person but I need extended absensces from people in order to better tolerate them nontheless. There is no better food on this planet than food cooked over an open, outdoor flame, with the possible exception of a big, fat, totally raw chunk of yellow-fin tuna. But there's no tuna in the mountains so that'll have to wait 'til the get-away's over. I'll survive on the stream water, edible plants, and songwriting..........

Hi im having real trouble with strumming, especially when im trying to mute the strings , strum and stay in time it can be such a mess and i get all cafuddled!! any tips or tricks or practice routines to help would be appreciated  Thanks !!

Hi Weedjie,
I have a few things to add to the fine list of suggestions/links that you've already received.

A wristband on you strumming hand can be useful in string control. Espescially the low E. Gently touch the wristband over the string you wish to mute/deaden.

Use the tips of your fingers on your chording hand to gently touch the unwanted string not to ring out. This may require a slight bending of the wrist to get the muting finger(s) in the proper position to mute.

My final suggestion is taboo in some circles but I'll tell you anyways. Implant  the tip of your pinky finger on the pick guard/ or pick guard area as to form a pivoting center. Use the inner palm of your thumb to mute desired strings. Be aware to remove your pinky when you do not wish to mute. This is a bad habit to get hooked on so use it sparringly.............

Hope you're feelin'better Roger, I'll share a little pain remedy with you;Fish oil capsules. The vitamin E in the fish oil speeds the healing process of the torn muscle fibers( which lead to soreness). And as Old Doll said, protect your hands with gloves! My wife 'makes' me do yardwork and I always wear gloves. A musicians hands are the crucial lifeline link between nonthingness and melodic bliss. Good for you for a solid, hard days' work, but do us all a favor and take care of those hands!

Hi Steve,
You're a fine musician, all around. With this said you'll need to push aside your feelings of inadequacy regarding your vocals and just let it loose. Sing loud, sing proud, and your message will not only be heard at a greater level but it will be felt stronger and deeper to those you are trying to reach. Keep on doin' what you're doin' and you'll be just fine.

Just keep on doin' it. Everyone out there in music land cringes when they first hear their own voice. Unless you're getting bombarded with vegetables and insults everytime you sing, keep at it. And if the vegetables keep coming, tell the a-holes throwing them what your favourites are............. If you enjoy doing something, keep at it. You'll get better and people will respect you for pursiung your dreams.
