Wow, thanks for clearing that up. It does always come back to that. You have a knack for cutting through all the crap and getting to the heart of the issue. You must be a big Freud fan as well.
Thanks for the laugh
Excellent James. I've always thought that the members were civil and that's very important. It's OK to disagree but important to respect everyone's opinion. We may need some clarification on "No obscenity, no foul or degrading language". Obviously, we probably don't want to get into a George Carlin style debate over what words are ok. Just some general guidelines would be good. There are a lot of words that can be construed as foul. I can also be very condescending and mean spirited without using cuss words (though I do love them a bunch).
In summary, I like the way the Moderators and Administrators police this site and guidelines are great but in the end it's up to you folks to make the call and I'm comfortable with that way. Keep up the good work!!!
In some cases (IMO especially Extreme and the Scorpions) because the ballads are their best effort. Although I haven't listened to either one of those albums in years, the rest of those songs were mediocre (not that I'm a fan of the ballads either).
I disagree with your assesment of Deep Purple. When I think of Deep Purple (and my youth!) I think of Highway Star and My Woman from Tokyo before I think of Child in Time. Same with GNR; I think of Sweet Child Of Mine, Paradise City and lots of others (although both of the songs you mention I also like.). I certainly don't think the ballads defined GNR.
Stairway to Heaven is just a well written masterpiece that even classic rock radio can't make me hate. That's just a beautifully crafted song.
You do have an excellent point about ballads though. It seems that 80's metal was defined by ballads. It was as if they made their records and then the music company said "We need a ballad on this record". Every band had to have that Bic Lighter ballad; seems like it was a formula or something to go with the pretty, extremely feminine looking lead singer.
I think having your palm on the back of the neck helps. Of course, that's an awful hand position and not recommended. I knew someday my crappy technique would pay off

I agree with Jay. I have a Takamine G series. It is a very nice guitar to play. It's not a Martin and so what. Not knocking Martin ( avery fine acoustic)but I don't care about what it says on the headpiece. When I bought the Takamine, I went to the music store and played 20-30 units without looking at brand or price. I narrowed it down to 3 guitars then I looked at the price. IMO this is the best way to buy a guitar for anyone. I don't play out so I don't care what it looks like. I've been to plenty of shows and I don't recall the way anybody's instrument looked. I think if you can play it, no one gives a crap what it looks like. Tim0473's advice is solid..play them all and the one that feels best to you (not me or anyone else) is the one for you. Reviews are helpful but don't base your decision solely on them.
Take the Spinal Tap approach; Maybe it's time to play "Jazz Oddysey"

THAT'S NOT A BAD TAG LINE
Your response intrigues even more...bluegrass arrangement? Sounds awesome. I use Audacity and a very inexpensive Logitech headset microphone. I do have a pick up in one of my acoustics but I see no reason you couldn't mic it just as easily. I can't praise the software enough. For a hack like me it's been so much fun. I'm not much of a player and realize that I never will be. That being said, I've recorded several songs and had a great time doing it. It's very addictive. As long as your PC has a sound card you're looking at a $30 investment or so (of course you can spend more but...). This isn't professional quality but it's not bad at all. I could send you a sample if you'd like. I run the whole thing on a laptop so when I travel for work I can mix or even record if I want to. FUN FUN FUN.
I too have a space and privacy problem. On some of my vocals you can hear my 2 year old yelling over the baby monitor installed in my office. My 5 year old also has a small guest vocalist spot on a track big fun!!!
Another great feature is I can collaborate over email with friends. I have a friend who's an accomplished musician, I'll send my tracks as mpegs over email and he'll add organ, bass and drums.
Sorry for rambling on...just wanted tyou to know how much joy I've had with home recording
IMO to an extent...yes. For a beginner, light strings would be easier to barre. Once you're fairly good at I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. I'd say use mediums and tough it out. You'll be a better player for it.

Dude, They may act like they don't care, but they still show up for the MTV Music Awards.
Good music will always come through no matter what the band is wearing.
Point taken. I guess the point I was driving at is the first bands to break through; for them it wasn't an image but rather just the way they were. Then the flood of copy cats but you're right, the flannel was just as bad (in a sense) as the baggy pants or cross dressing (admittedly I'd much rather wear flannel than pantyhose though!). I guess the overall point is in a perfect world bands would be judged on their music not a combination of image/marketing and music. And record sales and signings would reflect the most original music. When you looked at Billboard chart it wouldn't be filled with boy bands and rappers who grew up in the suburbs
Zurf,
I'd really like to hear that Elton John cover. Any chance of recording and posting? I'm trying to put together Rocket Man too. I'm a big fan of 70's rock covers.

I dont know how I left that out my short list as this album is probably in my top three for debut albums from any band.
It is timeless! play it to someone that has no clue who van halen are and they would think it is new music for today.
Ken
I agreed with all the albums on your list as well. I think the GnR record did a similar thing...Like them or hate them that album was influential
jaygordon75 wrote:Might check your tuner to make sure it's set for 440. Some tuners have different tuning ranges and some can adjust. See your instruction manual for the tuner and might need to reset it...
This could be it. Some tuners have multiple ranges for different instruments
For 30-40% of the price, do you guys think they're worth considering. I don't give a crap what the headstock says so long as it plays nice. I'm not a performer so looks/finish doesn't matter either.
In my head, I've always thought the Beatles were and still are the best band overall. There are lots of arguments against this but no one will ever change my mind and I don't think they'll ever be surpassed (IMO of course). The quality of the music, the influence on others, the output; there's no one else to compare them to. I've heard the argument for the Stones and while I like the Stones it's no comparison. 2nd on my list would be Pink Floyd but still Beatles @ #1

Agree 100%!!!!!
I've always felt real talent should stand alone without image but I'm probably not living in the real world musically. I really lose respect for performers who'll do anything to get signed. A line in the sand has to be drawn somewhere and cross dressing should be beyond that line. I guess you never until you're faced with the choice. I'd like to think most of us would just say no to the whole tranvestite rock thing!!!! It is sad there are so many unsigned talented people out there (and even in here in Chordie land) and so many pieces of sh@% signed to labels. Image is worth way too much in todays music scene. I was encouraged by the Seattle think that was going on in the 90's with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, etc. It really seemed as if the music industry was going to be about music again but then came Rap and then suddenly no one's pants fit right anymore!!
bud_wiser wrote:P.S. I just entered my song Walking into the July comp so if anyone fancies going and listening to it a few hundred times to get me up the rankings it'd be great
Great song Bud...But I've got to say I would've gone with My Little Angel instead that one blew me away. Nicely done!!!!
I play both with and without a pick depending on the desired outcome. Don't give up on picking you'll be sorry down the line.
Van Halen's 1st album. 1st track Running with the Devil stopped everyone in their track and spawned a new era of playing (whether what came out was positive or negative is a topic for debate). That album blew most everyone away.
I think anyone but Norman. I've seen him collapse way too many times and to think he can compete with declining skills is too unlikely. It would be a cool story of he did but his Masters final day collapse is still in my head. And that was 10-15 years ago when his skills were much better. Sorry Kap I don't think he's got what it takes ( but a small part of me would love to see it)
I think you guys are as close as you're going to get to defining metal annd hard rock. There will always be bands that sit in the fence of multiple genres. I agree with Doc that Zepp and Sabbath are not metal. I've always associated metal with speed/tempo in addition to rock and roll feel. There are some bands that are easily classified as Metal (like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden) but others that are sometimes lumped in....Does anybody remember Jethro Tull winning Metal Album of the Year (I think it was a Grammy). Priceless example of no clue
Great lead. I liked it before and now even more. I'm not sure what style it is though. It's got a Carribean feel but it's not reggae. Tough call....maybe the best compliment (and it's certainly worthy) is it transcends genre classification!!!
Doc,
Everyone is subject to spam. Some people actually receive it others don't as it's blocked at various points in the spam mail's path. I don't get much in my inbox anymore but I've taken steps to block it. You Internet Service Provider (ISP) should be blocking the bulk of spam as 80% of it is easily detected. If you're getting more than 10 a day maybe it's time to switch ISP's. The rest of the more clever ones that get through you can deal with in various ways depending on what software your using on your computer. Outlook has some junk filtering capabilities and you antivirus software should as well. It's a never ending battle but with diligence, some reconfiguration of existing software and a good ISP you should be able to get rid of most.
You'll notice most times the spam messages about Viagra and Cialis are intentionally spelled wrong. This is because your ISP's filter is set to recognize keywords and filter them; this is a lame attempt to get through that.
Unfortunately, this is a long, very boring and "unmusical" topic which could thread on for weeks. If it becomes too much to bear email me the specifics and I'd be happy to help in any way I can. There are lots of very computer saavy folks here who can/will help.
I think you either don't engage them or ask them to come up and join you depending on how distracting it is. I'm sure Southpaw can chime in on this as he performs regularly and would know from experience the best way to deal with it. Having never performed in that setting, I'd say ignore if possible.
On forgetting lyrics...just wing it. It's supposed to be fun
