Topic: Hooray! My Mic input is Fixed ! (1 replies, posted in Recording)
Hello Russ ,
I have been trying to figure out how to get my mic input working for a while now and have searched and talked to several techs about it and haven't been able to get it. I need my laptop for work so it was hard to give it up to have it looked at. Yesterday I finally broke down and decided to try get it in for a repair. Anyway they are about a week or 2 backlogged, but I talked to a young feller that gave me something to try and it worked. So this is what I did. Per his instructions
Go to Control Panel
Go to Device Manager
Then Click on Sound Video and Game Controller
Then a list comes up
I chose my IDT Hi Codec Audio and right clicked on it
a window comes up to uninstall and you can click Ok or cancel on bottom of window
I clicked Ok be careful there is also a place above that says delete software "DO NOT" Click this one
The Computer will then have to be rebooted and then
IT IS WORKING !!!

Thanks Steve !
Hey Tops,
If you and when you get started on the harmonica, get a holder. I think if I would have got a holder a few years ago it would have made things way easier. Having the guitar carrying the ryhthm and the melody of the song going through your head seems to make it so much easier. I wanted to share a couple 3 chord songs that sound good and are the easiest I have tried.
Can't You See, Marshall Tucker and
Standing On a Rock, Ozark Mountain Dare Devils, I am really having fun with this one it is upbeat but an easy one, every day I can see improvement , wish my guitar playing would have come a little easier.

My next project is to get better at the mandolin and learn to do some picking and maybe it could lead to getting to play with some folks like these fine musicians.

Re: Harmonica (14 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I forgot about the holder , mine didn't have a brand name but it was $11.95 and it has the round neck piece with clear rubber hose for the neck portion and two wingnuts to adjust it were you need it. It seems to be right there when you need it. One thing to look for, make sure you get a holder that is made for the diatonic harmonica, cause they are shorter and can twist around in the holders that take the long harmonicas.

Re: Harmonica (14 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Thanks alot Jeff,
I bought the Hohner Hot Metal series and they were $10. each and I have been using a Progressive ,Beginner Harmonica instruction book $20. The book has a cd and a dvd , I took the book and cd to work with me, I have a lot of sit and wait time so I tried to give it 1/2 hr a day. It's been fun and I have been trying not to stress out over it and just have fun.
I tried in the past but the book I used that time started out with some tonque moves right away and I have a terrible gag reflex and I gave up before I started.
Anyway I was advised to start with the 10 hole Hohners , but I don't think I can help you learn to play I've only been strugglin along for about 2 weeks.
Oops I just looked at your link and that sure looks like a good deal, I bet SouthPaw would know a lot more than me, but 20 bucks aint alot to be out.
Thanks Again,

Howdy,
Well I come out of the closet and posted my first vid with a harmonica, made some mistakes with the guitar that I usually don't but I found it is one more thing to think about and it distracts from the concentration, but what the heck I'm learning.

One thing alot of folks don't think about is, when hearing songs on the radio or wherever. The song by Bob Dylan, Neil Young or whoever. There is a band behind the singer and most singers are playing ryhthm guitar and have a lead player, drummer, bass player and lots of other effects . There are very few that are just guitar and vocals and they usually are a very very talented few.
Damien Rice comes to mind and if you have heard him, think what his music would be like without the cello and Lisa Hannigan on backup vocals.
Be happy that you can make music, there are millions that wish they could !

Re: Harmonica (14 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I know what you mean Zurf, I was doing things on my guitar about 5 yrs ago that I wanted to get better at and thought the mandolin was taking too much of my time and I was stressing out too much over it. Now I am getting more comfortable with my guitar playin so I'm gonna add the harmonica. The harp is working pretty good, I just played "Cant You See" with guitar and harmonica and my wife said Wow you are doing good for just going back to it. She never compliments me so I must be improving.
Next up is the mando, but I like Zurf , have a library of guitar, mandolin and harmonica instruction books and I am using them with the harmonica and will with the mandolin too. I think if I would have done that with the guitar it wouldn't have taken me 30 yrs to learn the 3 chords and 3 songs I have in my bag
Thanks for the encouragement

Re: Can anyone sing?? (21 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Micky, Keep on singin and recording yourself and you will see improvement . Make use of your capo and on songs you can't hit the high notes, move your capo around and find your sweet spot.
A feller once told me when I was down on my voice," make the best of it son, it's the only voice you're gonna get, if folks don"t like it they can leave."

Well, this time I made a commitment to myself to learn to play the harmonica . I have been workin on it for a week and have seen some progress and am startin to get it. When I get so I can play it with guitar and do a half decent job, I'm going back to the mandolin. I have played the mando about 6 yrs but mostly just chording and limited pickin but when I get back to it , I am gonna try and structure my practices better.
Anyways an old dog tryin to learn some new tricks

Re: Adding a pickup to electric (10 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Zurf I would recommend condensors for recording, and a guitar with a pickup and a dynamic mic for live performances. It is much easier to dial in your sound live with a pickup and a dynamic mic won't pickup the crowd noise and everything else.
The only bands I see using condensors live are bluegrass bands to get the true acoustic sound. Using a condensor live will be tough.

Re: Adding a pickup to electric (10 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Howdy Zurf,
There are alot of different pickups and some are not too spendy, I added a LR Baggs I-Beam I think around $76 to my Martin and it works ok, and I added a B-Band to my Epiphone and it works great. The B-Band is about a $200 pickup and is a little tougher to install, piezo pickups are pretty easy to install, just remove the strings and bridge, slip the transducer under the bridge
find a spot inside to mount the battery. The input for the 1/4'' will probably require drilling out where the strap button is, if you are handy and have some patience I would do it yourself. Most luthiers are very reasonable if you don't want to tackle it.

Hello and Welcome to Chordie,
I don't know where you are at as far as what you have been learning from your instructor. I believe even if you are learning a lot of technical stuff and music theory , scales or whatever you have to learn some easy songs to keep it fun. The song I find the easiest for beginners and young and old like is "Knocking On Heavens Door" G D Am progression over and over 4 beats of G
4 beats of D and 8 beats or 2 measures of Am.

Don't get crazy and get in trouble though, them boys of yours don't need to hear about dad in the jailhouse. My kids never let me forget it after a dumb azz uncle had to tell them about my misspent youth. Sounds like a good time, check in on your return and share some stories.

Re: switching from finger picking to a pick (13 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hello,
I am a self taught fingerpicker and also flatpicker, I use a thumb pick alot and it will come easy for you if you use your thumb without a pick now. It seems kinda weird at first switching from no picks to thumbpick or flatpick, but I like the versatility now and am still working on them all. A thumb pick will magnify mistakes when fingerpickin so don't get discouraged it really increases the volume.
If you get into a thumb pick you will advance to palm muting and that gives you a whole new sound also. I would say give it a try you will like it. You will have to experiment with thumbpicks there are a lot of choices.
I still enjoy and I think I play the best with just flesh on strings but sometimes a feller or gal needs more volume.

I guess I should been more worried about subject and classes, instead I was worried about hot chicks and who had wheels and smoking in the alley across from the school. When we did get our lockers open we jammed them so we wouldn't have to fiddle with the combination.
We were not thugs or gang members but some folks called us hoods or hoodlums.
You will be fine in a couple days and everything will be cool and you will wonder why you were stressing out . It wouldn't hurt to let the chicks know you play guitar

Re: Just Starting Out (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
A tip that may help you on chord progressions . A lot of songs that follow a pattern A D E are called a 1 4 5 progression meaning the A chord is the 1 chord or tonic, usually the key of the song, the D chord is 4 and E is 5 . I am betting the songs you mention that have an E thrown in are a one four, one four and one five progression that means the first two verses are A & D and A & D and third verse would be A E and back to A . It helps me in remembering the song what progression they are in. Hope this makes some sense. I think your progression would be a one four, one four, one five and back to one progression
Hi! I just started this week... check out the free lessons from www.justinguitar.com -- he starts you out with just A,D,E ... then suggests practicing minute changes (go back and forth between like A&E for example as many times as possible in a minute... then try to beat your own score to build up your chord changes). As for an easy song that uses JUST these three chords... I'm working with "leaving on a jet plane" from the beginners books others are talking about. It primarily goes back and forth between A&D with E thrown in here and there... you can just strum each cord down once as you're working on your chord changes and then work on the strumming pattern later on! =0) anyhow... that's what I'm doing! Good Luck!
