That's great service, Beamer ... it's always encouraging to do business with an honorable vendor.

Hello, Librarian ...

I just looked everywhere I know of for "Blind Willie Harper", but couldn't find chords or tabs for it. I found out that Shel Silverstein & Jim Casey wrote it, the lyrics (at www.cowboylyrics.com) and that Bobby Bare also recorded it. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Mostly Autumn    "Shrinking Violet"    Somewhere? 2001 - 2003?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvjOhVsIG_g

This beautiful ballad features the wonderful vocal & recorder harmonies of Heather Findlay & Anne-Marie Helder. I also love the way the various instruments add in seamlessly, building to Bryan Josh's power chord intro to an amazing guitar outro, accompanied by Helder on the flute, and Findlay's haunting vocals. This one has everything I like about Prog, and it never gets old. "Shrinking Violet" is from their 2001 album "The Last Bright Light".

Thanks to you, too, Roger Guppy.  I've since discovered that Yuval is the name of the now-defunct makers of the Samsons from Kibbutz Gadot in Israel.  Pity they stopped making them.  They're lovely instruments.  (Many thanks also to my Mom and Dad who overcame their skepticism of my guitar enthusiasm back in 1976 and forked over the $160 for my beloved, obscure first axe.)  Play on, everyone!

That's terrific that you found out the source of your guitar, and you certainly have a treasured rarity there. It's funny that you mentioned your parents' skepticism in the 70's, 'cuz I went through the same thing ... glad they didn't put their foot down and say "No!" for either of us. big_smile

I was delighted to find another video online by Luca ... he's a very unique talent, and always enjoyable to watch and listen to.

Sounds like a panic attack moment, Phill. It's cynically consistent that gear which works flawlessly in private, goes AWOL in public. Glad you were able to muddle through it ... any would take the experience a lot differently.

Hahahahaha! This is simply hilarious, Phill, and hilariously simple ... five stars on both counts.

A sad but all-too-familiar tale, Easybeat ... nicely captured, mate! Reminds me of the lyrics to Marillion's song "Three Minute Boy".

Welcome to Chordie, Diana ... from eastern Canada.

We're a fairly laid back bunch here, and eager to share good info, encouragement, and answer questions in a non-competitive, non-confrontational way. Chordians are from all over the globe, with many cultural and musical differences. But the love of guitars and music is our common bond.

And speaking of sci fi, how about this great exchange between Drax and Ego from "Guardians of the Galaxy II"

Ego: "Really, I'm just a god with a small g."
Drax: "Modesty. I like it. I too am extraordinarily humble."

That was impressive. And you are right on with  Paula Cole's voice blending so nicely with his voice. I don't actually think this sounded like  Prog  music at least to my ears.

Thanks, CG ... I agree that this isn't really what we think of as Prog Rock, even though genre lines can often be blurry. Peter brought a lot of his prog influences from his earlier career into what he's done in more recent years, i.e., a bit of "unusual-ness" if that's even a word. Whatever it is, I'm glad you enjoyed it. big_smile

Peter Gabriel    "Come Talk to Me"    Modena, Italy, 1993

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a3GIy03iRk

As a founding member of Genesis, Peter went on to a very successful solo career as we all know. Although he eventually found his way to a more "pop music" type of writing, he maintained a lot more originality than most do in this genre. This "Secret World Tour" concert was recorded late in 1993, and came out on DVD in 1994. Having worked with several female co-vocalists over the years, I have to say that Paula Cole is my favorite. Her voice blends so well with Peter's, and this rendition of "Come Talk to Me" is one of the best. And of course, there's always a bit of Gabriel's trademark theatricality ... a powerful weapon, in Batman's opinion. lol

Cheers, Jim ... thank for the comments. Joscho's skill level is right at the top with the best, and that cat on the bass is amazing.

A Steve Earle concert would've been a real treat ... sounds like you had a blast!

As I've been pondering the way our opinions - and even our core values - are so blatantly and recklessly influenced by the media, I thought of Marshall McLuhan's quote from his 1964 book "Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man". And that gave rise to this quickly assembled little poem:

THE MEDIUM IS …

The medium is the message …
From reporting to journalism to editorialize,
The facts matter less than anything else.
The medium influences objectivity
The medium influences our activity
Trusting a stranger with a nudge and a wink,
Trusting a stranger to tell me how to think.

The medium is the mass age …
Communication and information technology
Carpet bombing our mass sociology
The medium reaches everyone now
The medium reaches every home now
Trusting a stranger with a nod and a smile
Trusting a stranger to control me for a while.

The medium is the mess age …
Nothing good happens as far as we know
Gotta boost ratings and give 'em a show
The medium shows only the bad
The medium shows no reason to be glad
Trusting a stranger who wants me to frown
Trusting a stranger who just brings me down.

The medium is the massage …
What they did or didn't say doesn't even matter,
Don't read for yourself, your mind is too scattered
The medium twists it however it bends
The medium twists it to serve its own ends
Trusting a stranger to sell me their lie
Trusting a stranger? I ask myself … why?

That's soooo cool that you two actually met ... thanks for the backgrounder! When I saw that the other Doug Smith was also from the west coast, I started wondering. As you say, watching one these high level guitarists play is a true education in itself.

I watched a documentary on YouTube last evening about acoustic guitars being made at Goodall Guitars in Fort Bragg, California:

Documentary:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS78naDiB4k

Goodall Website:  http://goodallguitars.com/about/#shopcontact

It was narrated by father and son James and Luke Goodall, enjoyable and very informative, and there was some nicely played acoustic work being played throughout. In the end credits, I noticed one of the players was someone named Doug Smith!

Could that be our Doug Smith, I wondered?

Congratulations, CG ... I hope you enjoy it and find it rewarding. I've never played one (the tiny size is intimidating) but have been told there are unique challenges to getting good with it, like every instrument. Your extensive knowledge of music itself should give you a running start. All the best!

Marillion    "Blind Curve"    Zelande, Netherlands, 2007

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FbdmvLuQLI

This is a track from Marillion's 1985 album "Misplaced Childhood", when Derek "Fish" Dick was their lead singer. His replacement (Steve Hogarth) does an admirable job (IMHO) of capturing Fish's emotion and intensity; it's a big challenge to take someone else's song and really take charge of it. I'm also continually amazed at the gorgeous tones guitarist Steve Rothery gets from his $250 Squier "Vintage Modified" Strat. His solo at 3:50 is very powerful. I read somewhere that he got tired of having expensive gear stolen while on the road, so this was his answer.

I gave it another listen through, Bill, and she does tweak the notes here and there ... adds a nice bit of tension in some places. Our pal David Gilmour rarely plays a note without bending it somehow, but I don't know if it's a technique with a formal name. Hopefully CG will share his expertise and help us "hobbyists" out.

Even though it's not an official title, you truly are a "Lyricist Extraordinaire", Jim. I'm also smiling because mowing the lawn is when I do some of my best thinking also. big_smile Our new place has a large lawn, and it takes a good 1 1/2 hours to mow with the ride on ... lots of time to meditate.
